Deliveroo Driver knocked at my door asking for money.

A couple of hours ago there was a knock at my front door so as it’s already dark by then I asked who it was and he said your delivery driver so I opened it as I was expecting a Amazon delivery and I was shocked to see a Deliveroo driver.I recognised him as a driver who has delivered to me on numerous occasions.He said he been waiting for a order from me but none had come and could I help him out with any spare change.
I was speechless to say the least and said No and shut the door and have been in shock for the last few hours thinking did that just happen.
To say it’s freaked me out is a understatement and I would appreciate any advice.
Thank You

Just be glad you've never been so desperate. It's not a nice situation to be in. Please don't report him.

Intransigentcat · 05/02/2023 21:30

I totally understand how unnerving it must have been for you, but Christ that's bloody sad too.

What? He knows where she lives and is knocking on her door for money. That's out of order. He needs reporting before it escalates

@EscapeRoomToTheSun ,
The thing is he has a job as a Deliveroo driver , you can’t just knock on customers doors and ask for money no matter how desperate you are.
If homeless people started knocking on doors begging for money they would get arrested.
I don’t know him .

YANBU OP, I do feel sorry for him but I think you should report to Deliveroo. Some people (particularly lone women!) May feel worried or pressured to give money.

PinkFrogss · 05/02/2023 21:34

Mostly thinking of DD when she was alone in uni accom, she’d have felt quite anxious over something like this. Desperate as the poor man clearly is it’s still not right.

No they wouldn't? It isn't a crime to knock on strangers doors and ask for money.

Deliveroo is hardly a job. It's very badly paid and you're at the complete whim of the company and other people.

Escalates to what?

exRoo · 05/02/2023 21:37

You're not one of the two Asian girls in Bournemouth that used to order Deliveroo and come to the door in skimpy silky pyjamas are you?

Either way it's worrying, yes report it.

OldFan · 05/02/2023 21:37

I would report it to deliveroo if there's a way of doing it @avamiah . It's not ok.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 21:37

Well a homeless person got taken away by the police just before Christmas for causing a disturbance outside Tesco pestering people for money .

It’s a strange man knocking on women’s doors asking for money. Do you really need help thinking what sort of thing could happen in that situation?

EmmaEmerald · 05/02/2023 21:39

OP
i am going to guess you live alone and he is targeting lone women with this?

avamiah · 05/02/2023 21:40

@exRoo ,
No I live in London with my 13 year old daughter and I’m 49 and always collect my orders fully clothed .

OldFan · 05/02/2023 21:41

I'm sure he's not destitute, he just wants more money. We all do but most of us don't beg.

I'm disabled and have never really been able to work but I don't go around begging. He has a job anyway, whether it's crap or not. It's creepy of him to call round at a woman's home when he doesn't have an order. And it's just scuzzy.

It's not professional and I'm sure his work won't be impressed by it.

WheelOfFish · 05/02/2023 21:42

What are Deliveroo going to do other than potentially fire him and so make him even more desperate (and likely to beg)? Why would anyone report him to his employer unless they have literally zero conscience (and are a little bit stupid)?

if you’re genuinely concerned then call the police, though I can’t see why you would be - he wasn’t demanding or violent and you were clearly quite firm about it. No reason to think he’d be a problem.

if this is true then it’s just sad all round.

I think it's pretty grim that you think someone who is obviously in desperate circumstance is somehow more likely to be a danger to women. Why do you assume that? Does crushing poverty cause misogyny?

Soothsayer1 · 05/02/2023 21:43

He thinks woman = soft touch
I doubt he'd try it if he thought a bloke would answer the door
what a tool he is
I'd report him, maybe log it with local police in some way?

Soothsayer1 · 05/02/2023 21:44

dont listen to posters who are making apologies for this idiot

Theunamedcat · 05/02/2023 21:45

I thought begging was illegal? Although police use their discretion and turn a blind eye to people begging on the streets if they are actively approaching people they will intervene in my local area we have people with asbos and other orders banning them from areas like the train station and subways areas where they target vulnerable people for "spare change" etc

Why are people snarking at the OP? Men begging at your door in the dark can be intimidating. It would be a shame if tipping quite generously made her a target.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 21:47

@Soothsayer1 ,
I tend to agree with you as I always open the door but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a partner so for him to knock at by door on a Sunday early evening is really weird.What would he of done if a man opened the door?

Alternatively, don’t listen to people who are telling you not to listen to opinions they don’t like.

DulcetTones · 05/02/2023 21:48

Most people who experience hard times don't go begging to former "customers" they barely know. The fact that he did makes him an outlier, as it is. Not difficult to imagine that someone who's already behaving oddly may not be completely stable. He might not threaten someone with violence, but being confronted at the door of your own home is enough to worry someone, especially someone who already feels a bit vulnerable.

Unless soothsayer really is a psychic and knows what he is thinking of course, rather than just guessing like everyone else.
