Deliveroo Driver knocked at my door asking for money.

A couple of hours ago there was a knock at my front door so as it’s already dark by then I asked who it was and he said your delivery driver so I opened it as I was expecting a Amazon delivery and I was shocked to see a Deliveroo driver.I recognised him as a driver who has delivered to me on numerous occasions.He said he been waiting for a order from me but none had come and could I help him out with any spare change.
I was speechless to say the least and said No and shut the door and have been in shock for the last few hours thinking did that just happen.
To say it’s freaked me out is a understatement and I would appreciate any advice.
Thank You

Victim blaming at its finest. He provided a service that he was paid for then knocked on a strangers door asking for money. Totally inappropriate and by no means acceptable because the OP has previously tipped him doesn't give him the right to go back to her house

fluffi · 05/02/2023 22:11

Report him to Deliveroo asap and ask what they are going to do about it. I'd be freaked out if someone knocked on my door begging and feel really unsafe. He could be doing this to other people as well, it needs to stop.

He must be desperate, and its very sad, but it's not okay to do this. And Deliveroo need to make sure their drivers know its not acceptable and they can't knock on previous customers doors.

I didn't realise anyone tipped deliveroo / ubereats / takeaway people cash though

CheesenCrackersmm · 05/02/2023 22:12

He thinks woman = soft touch. I doubt he'd try it if he thought a bloke would answer the door

Read the story you goober. The driver knocked the door because she has tipped in the past.

I understand OP's consternation. Definitely report that behaviour. He sounds really hard up, which is relatable, but even so!!

I hope this isn't off topic - but is it a thing to tip delivery drivers?

As I never have tipped Amazon, Evri etc, is this something that others do?

I don’t even see most of the parcel couriers that deliver to me (usually they just leave on the doorstep and are back in the van before I’ve opened the door) and when I do have to eg sign for something they’re gone so fast even if I wanted to tip them I couldn’t! It’s rarely the same person twice. So no, I don’t.

I do tip the pizza delivery guy though and I would for other food deliveries.

Not sure what a goober is but that hardly means part of his reasoning for knocking on OPs door is because she’s a woman on her own, does it?

avamiah · 05/02/2023 22:14

@fluffi ,
I have always tipped drivers delivering food and takeaway orders.If the person can bring my dinner on his bike in the rain then I am happy to give a small tip and will continue to do so .

@avamiah i dont order takeaways but i tip my hairdresser and whoever serves me in Costa

WhereIsMumHiding3 · 05/02/2023 22:19

avamiah · 05/02/2023 22:08

@WhereIsMumHiding3 ,
I have no idea what his name is and yes he knows my address and telephone number because it’s on my Deliveroo Account and he works for them.

When you've had Deliveroo deluverues they say Bob us delivering and is X mins away
Bug those notifications disappear

So the issue is if you are reporting him and can't recall his name, you'd need to describe him and say he regularly delivers to me and It won't be a definite identification though

It's intrusive behaviour though a misuse of your personal date (address) and he knows that

avamiah · 05/02/2023 22:19

@JenniferBooth ,
I don’t tip in Costa as I don’t go there but say for example I’m in my local pub and it’s my round then if the total is £18.20 I will give £20 and say keep the change.
As it’s my local and they are friendly and provide a good service .

If your hairdresser turned up demanding cash everyone would be like wtf

GatoradeMeBitch · 05/02/2023 22:22

Bloody poor people knocking on your door, even if they've provided a service to you before. How very dare they....they need to go back into their box until you require them again.

You can't be serious with this. You're happy for anyone you have ever had any kind of service from to knock on your door at night and ask for cash?

Also you are responding to someone who does tip.

I bet you don't.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 22:23

@WhereIsMumHiding3 ,
And it’s put me off using Deliveroo again as I’m thinking he’s waiting for my address to pop up .
But what are the odds of that as there are hundreds of Deliveroo drivers so he surely wouldn’t be waiting for me ?

I wouldn't say that he's 'obviously desperate for money' - he has a job. He just wants some money and is resorting to effectively begging for some more without having to work for it, to use for his own pleasure.

It's actually not uncommon- most beggars have money they just want extra.

But I'm sure his employers will frown on it, and rightly so.

JenniferBooth · 05/02/2023 22:23

There were suggestions on here during Covid that people should still pay their hairdressers during the lockdowns presumably from the well off who can afford to pay for a service they wert getting

OldFan · 05/02/2023 22:27

@avamiah I would definitely contact Deliveroo if you haven't already and report this.

My Deliveroo account locked up so I can't use it- I use Uber Eats and it's usually fine. You could use that instead, or Tesco Woosh or Just Eat.

I tried 'Beelivery' but one of the drivers was rubbish and couldn't find the items himself even though they were in the shop.

You are a braver and better person than me @avamiah

I wouldn't be tipping anyone in cash at my door if this happened to me

Only my regular postie and regular parcel people get a cash tip at Christmas (Not amazon cos I never see the same person twice)

When I do get a takeaway I'll tip though the app only - I imagine they get less but its probably safer.

plumduck · 05/02/2023 22:30

IDontWantToBeAPie · 05/02/2023 22:09

Sounds like he's struggling. How very sad.

Loads of people are struggling. They don't go round harassing their customers.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 22:36

@fluffi
I’m not brave or better than anybody but why should I not tip a delivery driver £1 or £2 because of the actions of somebody else.
However after what has happened earlier with the driver from Deliveroo I doubt I will be using them again.

Topseyt123 · 05/02/2023 22:37

I would try to report this to Deliveroo because I would have found this intimidating. It just isn't acceptable.

I do absolutely feel for people who are in dire straits for money. However, I would not want to feel intimidated on my own doorstep. If that draws some on here to flame me then so be it.

What bollocks!! Don't be so utterly ridiculous.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/02/2023 22:49

I totally understand how you feel but can't decide if he was being incredibly cheeky or it's incredibly sad that he was that desparate to do it - it would unnerve me too

Absolutely. Call the police at the very least.

BasoonerOrLater · 05/02/2023 22:52

I would say that you are possibly unusual (I mean that in a kind way!) for tipping Deliveroo drivers in cash - Deliveroo encourages you to tip via the app and I would say the whole platform (given the high fees) is generally set up to not make tipping seem necessary in the same way as you’d generally tip eg a traditional Chinese where you’re paying cash and rounding up or whatever.

Therefore the fact you’d given cash tips will have made you memorable for the driver and sadly that would be why he’s targeting you - whether it’s sad/desperate/manipulative/intimidating, however you want to interpret it.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 23:03

@BasoonerOrLater ,
I have been thinking non stop for the last 4 hours why he would knock at my front door and ask me for money and I have to agree with you as it has to be because I have always tipped in cash.
Was he so desperate for a few pounds or did he think by knocking at my door I might feel so shocked and pressurised that I would go into my purse and grab a note to get rid of him?
Well he went away empty handed.

Oh get a bloody grip. Do you want all the local "poor people" knocking on your door for a few quid every night.

A strange man knocking on your door asking for money is frightening and disturbing.
