For me it’s Alan Rickman (who I absolutely love in everything else) as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. He came across so unbelievably creepy and repulsive and not the gallant kind soul he is in the book.

OP posts:

I love him in that ! I watch it just for him.

EsmeShelby · 06/01/2023 21:46

Dotcheck · 06/01/2023 21:48

Everyone in the latest series of the Crown

JD90 · 06/01/2023 21:49

FirstFallopians · 06/01/2023 21:50

Penguinsaregreat · 06/01/2023 21:52

I agree with JD90

SocksAndTheCity · 06/01/2023 21:52

Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

The whole point of the story was the main characters descent into madness because the malevolent influence of the hotel, so why pick somebody who was so totally unconvincing as a kindly and mildmannered family type that it completely fucks up the entire premise?

Justcallmebebes · 06/01/2023 21:53

Daniel Craig in that Onion thing on Netflix at the moment. I couldn't watch it. His dreadful acting and even worse southern American accent

Kanaloa · 06/01/2023 21:54

Last year, I read a teen/YA type thriller called One of Us is Lying that my niece lent me, and then we watched the Netflix adaptation. Every character was wrong. We kept talking about it, it was so distracting. The character with dark hair was blond, a character described as the all American blond haired, blue eyed Southern type was African-American etc. It sounds daft but it put me off. I would try to make at least some effort to cast somebody who looked a little like the description in the novel. I didn’t like the novel too much anyway though!

I think if you love a book the adaptation is almost always miscast, because you watch and think ‘that’s not how I imagined you.’

That’s not how I saw it at all! That character is already not the kind/mild mannered type before he ever hears of the hotel. He’s an alcoholic who has attacked one of his students and broken his own toddler’s arm. I don’t think it was just the malevolent force of the hotel.

For me the issue was how comical the part after he goes mad was. I don’t know if that’s just the dated aspect of the film though, where some things become comical.

Speaking on Stephen King, a lot of his adaptations are soooo miscast. Although on the flip side he has some that are brilliantly cast.

princessspotify · 06/01/2023 21:58

Jamie Dornan as Christian Gray

Eyesopenwideawake · 06/01/2023 21:59

Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon in the Da Vinci Code. Should have been Liam Neeson or Harrison Ford.

PAFMO · 06/01/2023 21:59

AndyWarholsPiehole · 06/01/2023 21:49

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter

This. Awful acting.
I'll add Stacey in Gavin and. Weakest link in a magnificent show. (Pamelaaa however being amazing)
Martine McCutchen in Love Actually. Just to make it even more ridiculous that the Prime Minister would fall in love with the tea girl /file carrier.

Ah, I'd always read it as the mild mannered family man who was horrified by the effects of his alcoholism on his behaviour and took the job partly to escape them and rebuild his normal life. He was definitely sane, at least.

Then again, my favourite SK film is Maximum Overdrive 😀

SocksAndTheCity · 06/01/2023 22:01

Somebody like Tom Hanks (or the equivalent of the day) would have been far more shocking, I think.

PuppyMonkey · 06/01/2023 22:02

Ken Barlow in Coronation Street Grin

PolarBlair · 06/01/2023 22:02

EsmeShelby · 06/01/2023 21:46

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Reacher is 6.5 Cruise is 5.8

I came on to say this!

Nothing wrong with Jason statham. Love his films

Kanaloa · 06/01/2023 22:04

Ooh yes! Tom Hanks would have been great in that part. I kind of get what you mean, because we only find out what happened with the student & Danny later in the book, it’s all revealed to us bit by bit so it’s like shocking layers of awful. I do think it’s difficult to make good adaptations of horror genre novels, because they lean so much into the jumps and simplify them too much.

No shame on Maximum Overdrive though - although I think Stand By Me would have to be my favourite adaptation!

UncleHerbie · 06/01/2023 22:07

One Day - Emma should’ve been played by Anna Maxwell Martin - in repose she is on the plain side but IMO can look occasionally look rather beautiful (not the Wallace face as in Motherland). She’s who I cast (in my head) when the book came out. I like Anne Hathaway but her Yorkshire accent was all over England.

The Time Traveler’s Wife - I would’ve cast Cate Blanchett as Clare - Rachel McAdam didn’t do it for me

I had great expectations both films (having read the books) but was definitely left wanting

stonebrambleboy · 06/01/2023 22:07

Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley in The Lost King.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 06/01/2023 22:08

Emma Watson in anything. 😂

Hobbesmanc · 06/01/2023 22:08

I read the beach by Alex Garland and mentally cast Ewan McGregor. And then Danny Boyle was announced as the perfect director post Trainspotting.

And they cast Leonardo Di Caprio. So wrong. See also Andi McDowall in Four Weddings. Zero chemistry.
