For me it’s Alan Rickman (who I absolutely love in everything else) as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. He came across so unbelievably creepy and repulsive and not the gallant kind soul he is in the book.

Maria Bello as Evelyn O'connor in The Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is just awful.
Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, just No!

Mothership4two · 08/01/2023 11:42

Didn't mind Alan Rickman in S&S although the nearly 30 year age gap made me pause although not uncommon for the time. Didn't feel either couple had any chemistry and Emma Thompson was too old for the part. Think there's about a 16 year age gap at her and Kate Winslet

In the novel I don’t think Brandon & Marianne have so much as a 30 year age gap. If I remember correctly she’s late teens and he’s in his 30s. Still not great, but he isn’t 30 years older than she is I don’t think!

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Reacher is 6.5 Cruise is 5.8

This was my first thought too

Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese in Terminator Genesis. Like Kyle Reese is supposed to be this brave future war hero sure he’s just a regular every man grunt. He’s not this muscle dude with a quick quip. It was just all wrong.

Cameron a Diaz in Gangs of New York - her attempt at an Irish accent alone is like nails on a chalk board. Gah. Awful.

He was terribly miscast as Kyle. And Emilia Clarke was terrible as Sarah Connor, she was just not convincing at all.

And while we're on Terminator movies, Nick Stahl as John Connor in the third one. Though the best John Connor is the adult John shown briefly in the intro to T2, second best is in the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Furlong is third and let's pretend Salvation never happened...

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 08/01/2023 12:08

Though now I'm wondering which Kyle was the worst, Genisys or Chronicles.

GlitchStitch · 08/01/2023 12:27

Michelle Collins as Stella in Corrie. Like she would ever have reproduced with Les Battersby.
Nicholas Cage in Captain Corelli. I'm one of the few who preferred the film ending but he was awful in it.
Either Kate or Leo in Titanic. She's like his Mum.
Ben Platt in the Evan Hansen film. I'm sure he was great in the musical a decade ago but now he's pushing 30 playing a 17 year old and the weird make up or effects used makes him look like he's made of plasticine.

Cattenberg · 08/01/2023 14:06

Breakfast at Tiffany’s was rather strangely cast.

Audrey Hepburn was an icon, but she’s nothing like the Holly Golightly in the book, who was a blond teenager.

George Peppard played Paul as the strong, serious type, which didn’t seem quite right.

The less said about Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi the better.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/01/2023 14:15

MichelleScarn · 06/01/2023 22:22

Definitely! And in that Prada advert, is that her with the transatlantic twang in the voiceover?

She is a terrible actress, she really can’t act at all. Most of the HP films she acts using her eyebrows alone, which I could forgive as she was so young, but she is still hopeless as an adult.

rothbury · 08/01/2023 14:35

The director wanted Marilyn Monroe to play Holly Golightly, and I think she would have been more like the overtly sexy character in the book.

Agree George Peppard wasn't nearly camp enough, but I think that's more about Hollywood "sanitising" the book.

BloodAndFire · 08/01/2023 16:59

ZittiEBuoni · 07/01/2023 16:19

BloodandFire, good call, I had forgotten my utter rage over the casting of Sandra Dickinson as Trillian. Ruined it.

Agree with Kevin Costner's dire, humourless Robin Hood. And John Malkovich is OK in Dangerous Liaisons but IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALAN RICKMAN.

Thank you!!

Very glad to know I'm not (quite) alone

Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple. Nooooo!!

Can I also add Julia Mackenzie in the same role.

Kenneth Branagh as Poirot.
Martin Shaw as Adam Dalgliesh in the PD James stories, he has to be Ray Marsden.

AlinaSquareQueen · 08/01/2023 17:41

Lessoftheold · 07/01/2023 15:21

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. Freddie had such presence which Rami lacked - and he didn't have Freddie's height.

I completely agree. I have no idea how this was considered an Oscar-winning performance, much as I enjoyed the film.

I much preferred Taron Egerton as Elton John.

JaneJeffer · 08/01/2023 17:46

and now...... I think I don't like him anymore Grin
 sorry @aonbharr

Bertie Carvel all the way for me, from the much more recent adaptations of 'Shroud for a Nightingale', 'The Black Tower' and 'A Taste for Death. I watched those not being at all certain how they would wear, so many years after Marsden/Shaw, but my verdict is that they're the best of the lot.

Carvel was much more like the brooding, insular Dalgleish I'd pictured from the books. Just as James wrote him, he plays him as an enigma that you feel you want to get to know, but can't.

mum2jakie · 15/01/2023 11:29

Just watching Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple. Awful casting!!

Singinghollybob · 15/01/2023 12:10

Justcallmebebes · 06/01/2023 21:53

Daniel Craig in that Onion thing on Netflix at the moment. I couldn't watch it. His dreadful acting and even worse southern American accent

Yes!! I was cringing watching him, just
couldn't take him seriously in it.

TragicMuse · 15/01/2023 12:29

Stephen Graham as Jerry Westerby in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

He's a good actor but he plays it totally wrong. Jerry Westerby is an Hon. he's the title character in Le Carré's The Honourable Schoolboy. And Stephen Graham used his normal accent, not the voice the character should have. And I know he can do the right voice because he did so in Parade's End.

I LOVE that film, it's almost perfect but for that one small slip.

TragicMuse · 15/01/2023 12:31

Dafne Keen in His Dark Materials. Lyra has bright blonde hair. It's so noticeable that The Gyptians have to cover her up to hide it.

I like how the actor developed, but her hair was so wrong.

GemJewels · 15/01/2023 12:55

Jane thingybob ( can't remember her surname ) playing our departed Queen. Looked nothing like her at all.
Meryle Streep playing Margaret Thatcher. Again, looked nothing like her.
The entire cast of The Crown. None of the cast look anything remotely like the person they're acting as.
I couldn't watch any of them because all I could think was ...you look and sound nothing like them, which put me off.

#nepobaby. Her father is Will Keen who played Father MacPhail. Her first acting job was also on a show her father was in.

TragicMuse · 15/01/2023 13:10

I didn't realise that @AngeloMysterioso

Explains a lot!!

MyView2 · 07/01/2023 00:25

John Hannah as Inspector Rebus. I like him but he’s not Rebus. The guy who plays Julia’s husband in Motherland, too young and better suited as a cheeky younger brother. Robert Carlyle as Begbie in Trainspotting, great actor but not the Begbie in my head from reading the book, too wee and skinny.

John Hannah apparently had some financial input when Rebus was first filmed but I was so glad when they changed him, he's lovely but he's not Rebus!

Can I be brave and say Roger Moore as James Bond, far too sleezy and his eye brows made me want to throw something!

Helen Mirren, not Jane thingybob.
It's just come to me now.

WildRosie · 15/01/2023 13:32

David Jason in A Touch Of Frost. I've never rated him as an actor anyway but I think he was mis-cast in this series, perhaps because I'm used to seeing him in comedy roles. On the other hand, I found Helen Mirren incredibly convincing in Prime Suspect.

DrManhattan · 15/01/2023 22:37

@AngeloMysterioso she was great in Logan
