For me it’s Alan Rickman (who I absolutely love in everything else) as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. He came across so unbelievably creepy and repulsive and not the gallant kind soul he is in the book.

Last year, I read a teen/YA type thriller called One of Us is Lying that my niece lent me, and then we watched the Netflix adaptation. Every character was wrong. We kept talking about it, it was so distracting. The character with dark hair was blond, a character described as the all American blond haired, blue eyed Southern type was African-American etc. It sounds daft but it put me off. I would try to make at least some effort to cast somebody who looked a little like the description in the novel. I didn’t like the novel too much anyway though!

I think if you love a book the adaptation is almost always miscast, because you watch and think ‘that’s not how I imagined you.’

Yes I saw the same. None of the characters were right and the story totally changed. I didn’t like Nate who was meant to be a sexy biker but was an extremely unattractive drug dealing prick

Rene Zelwegger as Bridget Jones.

She tried hard but it should have been an Englishwoman. And a naturally plump one at that.

Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley in The Lost King.

I loved the film but when I saw photos of the real Phillips Langley after it I was really confused as to why they dressed Sally Hawkins as an overgrown toddler and gave her an abominable haircut when the real Phillips wore normal clothes and had long blonde hair. We’re they supposed to be making her look like there was something wrong with her?

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter

Came on to say exactly this!

Infuriating because everyone else was great but he couldn't act for toffee.

MooseBreath · 06/01/2023 22:14

Michael Gambon as Dumbledore in Harry Potter 3-8. Reading the very popular and easy to read source material should've been a prerequisite to the role.

I do really like seeing some diversity in YA drama - just seemed odd to cast an African American actor to portray a character who is described so so specifically as blond hair blue eyes type. The only explanation I could think was that they saw he was described as looking ‘like Captain America,’ typed Captain America into Google, and decided to go with the new Captain America.

Or possibly they just didn’t read the book at all.

Nothing wrong with Jason statham. Love his films

I enjoy Jason Statham films. Goldie Hawn isn't a favourite. I really like Diane Keaton and Danny DeVito (and his wife), I think they have done their various roles justice.

Ididanamechange · 06/01/2023 22:16

Emily Blunt in Girl on the Train. She's a great actor but too pretty to match the description in the book.

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables.

LadyWiddiothethird · 06/01/2023 22:16

@EsmeShelby Agreed,how ridiculous,couldn’t watch it.

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Reacher is 6.5 Cruise is 5.8

They’ve cast well for the tv series, not someone I recognised but far more ‘of the books’.

It shouldn’t have been someone plump, though, should it? Bridget is quite slim! She weighs about 9 stone. I wouldn’t say that’s plump. I thought the whole point was that she’s obsessed with diet culture/influenced by societal expectations and family pressure when in fact there’s nothing wrong with Bridget. She’s fine!

Yes, weird.

3ormorecharacters · 06/01/2023 22:19

Mark Rylance as Cromwell in Wolf Hall. Cromwell was supposed to be physically intimidating and thuggish, I couldn't buy Mark Rylance as him at all.

Oh, also - Tilda Swinton AND John C Reilly in We Need To Talk About Kevin. I thought Ezra Miller was fantastic as Kevin, but the movie overall was a letdown for me. And the parents made no sense for me - I imagined them to look total different based on their descriptions.

dropthevipers · 06/01/2023 22:20

Passage to India, Alec guineas as professor godbole. Full on "goodness gracious me" cringeworthy.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/01/2023 22:20

Kristen Stewart cast as anything other than 3rd plank of wood on the left or the Before pic in a Sennakot advert.

Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen in the rehashing boring bits of Star Wars.

Tom Cruise in The Mummy.

Russell Crowe playing Ray Winstone in The Mummy.

FirstFallopians · 06/01/2023 21:50

Emma Watson as Hermione Granger
Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty & the Beast

Definitely! And in that Prada advert, is that her with the transatlantic twang in the voiceover?

MichelleScarn · 06/01/2023 22:23

Andrew mcdowell in 4 weddings and in Groundhog Day.
Loved her in Cuckoo though!

Yes! Another novel that I loved and mentally cast. I saw maybe Nicole
Kidman. She can really play that highly strung nervey type. Although she doesn't look very Armenian lol. And the father should have been blandly all American handsome.

AFS1 · 06/01/2023 22:27

Amanda Seyfried in Les Mis. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Can’t listen to the ensemble songs because she ruins them.

Flitter123 · 06/01/2023 22:27

Nicholas Cage in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

I quite like Kristen Stewart but I don’t really understand why?

Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple. Nooooo!!

Yes!! He should have been a sort of big handsome looking guy. But it was John C Reilly… I do like NK, but I had a mental picture of Eva.

This is why sometimes I’m half pleased some of my favourite novels haven’t been adapted. Unless the director can project my personal thoughts onto the screen it will likely be completely wrong!

I could say that about 90% of the cast of Les Mis. Why did nobody tell Eddie Redmayne to open his mouth, sing clearly, and stop mumbling/whispering? So annoying.
