To be shocked at the blatant racism on Facebook over the new pm

I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

At least you know which of your friends are racist now.

Handy.

FredGarland · 25/10/2022 17:56

I haven't seen anything on Facebook, but there was a very nasty thread on reddit. I find it beyond belief that these people think it's OK to publicly air their racist views.

Astrak · 25/10/2022 17:56

Disgusting racism.

PreColumbian · 25/10/2022 17:56

There will always be ignorant people, sadly.

emmetgirl · 25/10/2022 17:57

Sadly I'm not shocked at all. It's vile.

ChakaKhanfan · 25/10/2022 17:58

What on earth! I would be calling out those people on Fb and ending friendships

luxxlisbon · 25/10/2022 17:59

You’ve only just noticed there are a load of racist bigots in the UK?

AquaticSewingMachine · 25/10/2022 18:00

The UK is a racist country, who knew. Except all people of colour.

AlwaysLatte · 25/10/2022 18:00

I haven't seen anything like that on FB. Time for a friend cull!!

Avelanda · 25/10/2022 18:00

My FIL shared something disgusting this morning. I’ve never heard him say anything remotely racist so it really shocked me. I wanted to call him out on it, and regret that I didn’t but it would have made things so awkward

MarshaBradyo · 25/10/2022 18:01

It’s horrendous

I don’t do FB or other particularly cesspit stuff but even then you see it a bit creeping in. I’m sure some parts of the internet are rabid with it,

LakieLady · 25/10/2022 18:01

Try some of the comments on the Daily Mail site. Full of racist ignoramuses.

That's precisely why such people get away with it. Decent people don't want things to be 'awkward'. Your FIL wasn't worried about YOU feeling awkward, was he?

luxxlisbon · 25/10/2022 17:59

No of course not. But some of these are the last people would expect this from. Ordinary ex school gate friends and "nice" friends who play a sport with dp. I thought I knew these people

OP posts:
Longerthanfiveweeks · 25/10/2022 18:03

Have you called them out on it OP?

sheepdogdelight · 25/10/2022 18:03

It's good that this has opened your eyes to the racism that is "normal" in the UK. I assume by the "shocked" that you didn't previously believe that a lot of people held these views?

theDudesmummy · 25/10/2022 18:03

It is a handy way to know what people really think, so you can get rid. I have not seen any of that now but would defriend if I did. (I got defriended by some people in 2016 when I posted about my dismay after the referendum, that saved me the the trouble of defriending them!).

mamabear715 · 25/10/2022 18:07

I haven't seen any on FB or anywhere else, but would NOT be impressed..

And this is why it continues 😡I would have 100% called him out

Soproudoflionesses · 25/10/2022 18:09

Not seen any myself but wow that is awful.

Dalaidramailama · 25/10/2022 18:10

I haven’t seen any such thing on my Facebook wall. I am from a white working class background.

I think you clearly need to do a Facebook cull.

daretodenim · 25/10/2022 18:11

I've not seen anything like that. I did wonder if he and his family will need higher security than former PMs though due to racists.

Basically though racism can't be stamped out by orders from above, although they can certainly take the lead. It's us down below who have to make it known that it's unacceptable. Unless we think it's not.

Totally appropriate to call people out on racism.

I hope they only buy British, made in Britain clothing, eat grown and produced/made in Britain food only, and holiday only in Britain. No pizza, pasta, Primark, curries or kebabs. No jetting off to Spain or anywhere else. And obviously that's the tip of the tip of the iceberg.

This is why I don’t discuss racism with white people.

Exactly this. YABU for being surprised.

Longerthanfiveweeks · 25/10/2022 18:03

Have you called them out on it OP?

Yes of course with an angry emoji and a "disappointed in such racism" comments. Cue others who I don't know laughing and calling me a Karen. Absolutely disgusting
