To be shocked at the blatant racism on Facebook over the new pm

I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

@Ekátn that's interesting. What kind of things do they say?

You find it racism interesting. And want to give you a list of racist ‘jokes’?

would you ask someone Jewish to list the the abuse they have had?

are you serious? Ffs this place is a joke sometimes.

NippyWoowoo · 25/10/2022 19:06

Nvm I missed that you said you had

My FIL shared something disgusting this morning. I’ve never heard him say anything remotely racist so it really shocked me. I wanted to call him out on it, and regret that I didn’t but it would have made things so awkward

healthadvice123 · 25/10/2022 19:08

@Artygirlghost its not only white people who are racist either , thats often forgotten
I have heard some awful racism over the years from non white people too, about other races different to their own

Yes, I have had this as well, when discussing racism on here. I tend to ignore such posters requests.

It is a handy way to know what people really think, so you can get rid. I have not seen any of that now but would defriend if I did. (I got defriended by some people in 2016 when I posted about my dismay after the referendum, that saved me the the trouble of defriending them!).

Ditto.
I was unfriended by Brexiteers after I expressed dismay as to the Brexshit “ Win”
And now look. UK 🇬🇧 on it’s knees.
No billions for NHS , all good European workers have left, and “ Borders” are more porous and attractive to criminal gangs than before Brexshit.

So they can explain to you why it wasn't really racist and you are "too sensitive" or "have a chip on your shoulder" - it seems to be quite the right wing strategy as far as I see on Facebook/Twitter, then accusing anyone who mentions racism of "playing the race card"😡

Croque · 25/10/2022 19:34

There was a lot of that in the US after Obama's victory. In time, it settled down and even turned around in some cases. However, those were the good ol' days of relative stability and prosperity. Rishi will not deliver in the eyes of many grassroots supporters and it could resurface every time they are not happy about something.

honestlove · 25/10/2022 19:35

It’s interesting because I am minority and there is usually no mention of racism around me save some thing blurted in error. I want to know what they say about us. @Ekátn

IncompleteSenten · 25/10/2022 19:35

I'm only surprised that you are shocked.
Racism is rife in this country. And it's getting worse.

lking679 · 25/10/2022 19:36

It’s disgusting. I saw it from husbands family member and, not wanting confrontation, just immediately defriended him.
Disappointed in myself for not calling it out, but defriend away.
I’m so disappointed I thought racism wasn’t as rife as it is. Obviously wrong and very sad about it.

No it’s not ‘interesting’ at all. it’s disgusting.

So again, why are you asking people to list the shitty things that have been said?

Whose ‘they’?

and who is us?

MissAmbrosia · 25/10/2022 19:45

Ive had to pull up my bloody Auntie on this tonight.

PeloFondo · 25/10/2022 19:47

I was just about to say I had only seen the usual memes (not racist ones) and then I opened Facebook and there was a racist one
Unfriended

Fimofriend · 25/10/2022 19:47

I was totally expecting that reaction.

Cheeseandlobster · 25/10/2022 19:48

NippyWoowoo · 25/10/2022 19:05

Yes I'm keen to know this as well

I have already answered this

I had a long tiring day. Bye

Sometimeswinning · 25/10/2022 20:03

Well there was obvious misogyny with Liz Truss so I'm not suprised. It just seems more anger at racism (it's not whataboutry, it's my own personal issue)

Not on my fb though. I think my town is pretty OK with anything as long as they do the actual job! Some people are vile and dumb. Unfriend.

Itsybitsypiper · 25/10/2022 20:04

I am surprised you are surprised. Being a person of colour, I truly believe we have not scratched the surface. Should be an interesting time for the racists now. Yay.

ofwarren · 25/10/2022 20:15

You need to change your friends.
I've seen none of that on my Facebook

Livelovebehappy · 25/10/2022 20:16

Tbh, not the slightest surprised. In fact the cynic in me actually thought that the reason Truss was picked over Sunak the first time, was because some MPs were thinking that choosing an Indian to be PM would cost them votes in the next election. It will happen, because some people will not want a none white PM. I haven’t heard anyone actually say it, but it’s definitely out there.

RosaMoline · 25/10/2022 20:40

I was feeling somewhat relieved, not having seen these on my Facebook feed. Then lo and behold this evening, someone who really should know better, posted one of these - no 10 as a post office and a corner shop..headed by ‘I don’t mean to offend but this is funny’ followed by others replying to it with the curry house one, and another with shoes piled up outside (like a mosque)
I thought about it for a couple of moments, then I decided fuck it, I am going to call her out. I commented;

‘ I don’t find this amusing at all. Say what you like about the conservatives but this is downright racist. The memes are stereotyping all south Asian people as all owning corner shops or curry houses. The third meme posted is inaccurate as the PM is Hindu and not Muslim. It is offensive’

EmmaH2022 · 25/10/2022 20:46

Cheeseandlobster · 25/10/2022 18:02

No of course not. But some of these are the last people would expect this from. Ordinary ex school gate friends and "nice" friends who play a sport with dp. I thought I knew these people

OP I had this chat with a couple of people today, one white and one POC. They are going for the satire and "just a funny joke" angle.

I will admit to being easily offended - but where's the joke? I think it's horrendous.

not a fan of the term Karen. I feel very old today. I just don't understand any of it.

many a true word spoken in jest.
