To be shocked at the blatant racism on Facebook over the new pm

I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

Posts like this always descend into posters doing back flips to show how "non racist" they are, telling everyone how they disowned their own grandmother for sharing a questionable FB post or stepped in and defended a POC in public against 50 white youths and such like. It's honestly cringeworthy. We all know racism is wrong, stop trying so hard to be a white saviour.

Devoutspoken · 25/10/2022 20:59

Haven't seen anything racist but then maybe that's the company I keep/bubble I live in

Vinyasa474 · 25/10/2022 21:13

There was a thread yesterday on MN about Rishi being PM and some of the comments were pathetic. Reminded me of the LBC caller who implied that he can't be British because he's not white. This Trevor Noah clip covered it beautifully

Choconut · 25/10/2022 21:16

Lets face it Boris only won the last election because he said he'd definitely do Brexit and all the northern labour supporters jumped ship because they wanted rid of all the foreigners - not only northerners are racist of course, plenty of southerners are too, but as those were big labour areas previously they had the most impact.

I haven't seen any criticism of Rishi though of any sort, I would have thought everyone would just be thankful that Truss was gone and someone with some sense and respectability was in charge. I think though that people often don't see this sort of thing as racism, they just see it as 'a laugh', just having a joke and you'd have to be 'woke' to not see it that way.

Amazing that they called you a Karen - I thought that meant an entitled white woman, the sort that uses the fact they are white to get away with bad behaviour towards ethnic minorities - which is literally the complete opposite of what happened with you. Ironic that these people are too dumb to know what an insult means, I guess now it's just become a way for men to put women down and keep them in their place.

Exactly and the other vile bitch pritti patel

Racism is everywhere, not just UK.

But it's Suella Braverman that leaves me gob-smacked.

Anti-immigration? Deport immigrants ?
Look in the mirror.

I thought he was more inclined to be an American citizen? He's another awful choice unfortunately. Lost God knows how much during covid. Maybe that's why Liz Truss was chosen instead of him?

Vinyasa474 · 25/10/2022 21:34

@Sometimeswinning he had a green card which allows for PR and a chance to apply for citizenship but gave it up. Agreed he should have been more transparent. BJ had US citizenship as he was born there but again only gave it up when during his time as Mayor or maybe just before (if I'm not mistaken). I think it's early days and the markets have picked up give Rishis knowledge of economics. Hopefully they will start focusing on raising taxes to improve health and social care funding as promised.

skippy67 · 25/10/2022 21:55

I'm shocked that you're shocked.

Cheeseandpineappleonastick · 25/10/2022 22:12

Not seen anything like that about the pm but I was shocked at something I saw making fun of the new little mermaid movie, I reported it thinking it would surely be taken down and apparently it didn't meet Facebook standards for racism!

whokilledlizandseb · 25/10/2022 22:13

I've only seen posts about how rich he is rather than his race. Different sort of friends I guess!

LifeSucksBigTime · 25/10/2022 22:15

I saw the cat/curry thing posted earlier by someone who I thought was an alright person. She only had one react to it so I guess I wasn’t alone in being flabbergasted that she thought that was an ok thing to post in 2022.

Sometimeswinning · 25/10/2022 22:33

Also Rishi was pro brexit! I was under the understanding that all brexit voters were racist??? Has mumsnet forgotten this? Or does it not suit the narrative?

I was feeling somewhat relieved, not having seen these on my Facebook feed. Then lo and behold this evening, someone who really should know better, posted one of these - no 10 as a post office and a corner shop..headed by ‘I don’t mean to offend but this is funny’ followed by others replying to it with the curry house one, and another with shoes piled up outside (like a mosque)
I thought about it for a couple of moments, then I decided fuck it, I am going to call her out. I commented;

‘ I don’t find this amusing at all. Say what you like about the conservatives but this is downright racist. The memes are stereotyping all south Asian people as all owning corner shops or curry houses. The third meme posted is inaccurate as the PM is Hindu and not Muslim. It is offensive’

"and another with shoes piled up outside (like a mosque)"

Hindu temples also leave footwear outside, as do Jain temples and Gurdwaras.

Luxurysleuth007 · 25/10/2022 23:22

I overheard two older ladies talking in a shop today, dismayed at an Indian PM and how one of their husbands would be rolling in his grave. Depressing when you realise the stark reality that people actually still have those narrow minded views in 2022.

heyytheredelilah · 25/10/2022 23:23

I’ve not seen any friends share anything like this, but on all the public posts about Rishi Sunak, there are people commenting racist things. I’ve just had a lengthy ‘debate’ with a man that is outraged that we have a prime minister that is NOT BRITISH. 😬😬

FrenchOnionShoeBox · 25/10/2022 23:40

Disgusting.

If anyone posts anything like that on my FB they get instantly deleted and I give them a wide berth in real life too. Thankfully it happens rarely.

onlylarkin · 25/10/2022 23:41

luxxlisbon · 25/10/2022 17:59

You’ve only just noticed there are a load of racist bigots in the UK?

Heck, even I have noticed before now and I live elsewhere.

mycatisannoying · 26/10/2022 00:01

Truly shocking Sad

Bollindger · 26/10/2022 00:29

The only one i saw was he levitated on the steps in a crowd.
However a Newspaper DM I think was doing a height piece.
which surprised me as Boris was under

WhenTheMusicFinallyStops · 26/10/2022 00:44

I have seen it today sadly too. Quite shocked to find a family member (not immediate, but still) sharing sh1t memes etc.
Absolutely disgusted.

ddl1 · 26/10/2022 01:09

Haven't come across it on FB, but I go on Quora sometimes, and, OMG, the (mostly American in my experience) posters who think that there should be a revolt at getting a 'brown-skinned Hindu' as PM; that he's not a British citizen; that he has come from India to rule us! I suspect considerable overlap with the people who insisted that Obama couldn't have been born in the USA.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/10/2022 01:50

Isn't it interesting that, quite rightly, racist comments should be condemned, but people on MN seem quite happy for all Tories to be called thick, racist cunts.

Being. a Tory is an option. Being vilified for your race is not.

So you condone the abuse of people simply for having a different political opinion to someone?
