To be shocked at the blatant racism on Facebook over the new pm

I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

Please do call people out on any racism. I have had to do it to my father on a number of occasions (he is not in the UK). I suppose he probably continues out of my earshot though. It's depressing.

DoItAfraid · 25/10/2022 18:13

Exactly this. YABU for being surprised.

As I said earlier. No. But I thought I knew these people

My FIL shared something disgusting this morning. I’ve never heard him say anything remotely racist so it really shocked me. I wanted to call him out on it, and regret that I didn’t but it would have made things so awkward

Please say something. People ignoring this disgusting crap is how it becomes so prevalent

generalh · 25/10/2022 18:20

I think it is great we have a person who is Indian and is a Hindu. Shame about his politics.

theDudesmummy · 25/10/2022 18:20

DH and I had friends who we thought were close friends, enjoyed their company, etc. On the evening of the 2016 referendum result they happened to phone. They asked how we were and we said we were obviously very upset.

Them: Oh why?
Us: Well the Brexit result of course.
Them: Oh that, we voted to leave.
Us: Why ever would you do that?
Them: because of the immigrants.

They are themselves immigrants to the UK.

We didn't speak again.

Ekátn · 25/10/2022 18:21

My dad is South Asian. I am not at all surprised.

People often notice I don’t look like I am from the UK but usually guess that I am greek or Spanish or Italian. So I get to hear and see a lot of racism against South Asians as people aren’t on their guard around me and say things they wouldn’t if you could immediately spot my heritage. It’s not always white people either.

crackofdoom · 25/10/2022 18:21

Yet, on another thread yesterday, posters were supporting each other in saying that it's perfectly acceptable to express ANY opinions, no matter how racist or homophobic, within your own home, and if you didn't agree with that effectively you supported some kind of police state 😡.

(My disclosure: haven't spoken to my family since an almighty row over racism, sparked by my brother putting on a "comedy" Indian accent and going on about curry and poppadoms in reference to the Delta variant of Covid. My 9 year old nephew was there and encouraged to copy him).

Bretonbear · 25/10/2022 18:22

I'd be ending friendships with anyone who posted racist stuff on any social media platform.

healthadvice123 · 25/10/2022 18:22

Not seen anything in facebook on any of my friends pages

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/10/2022 18:23

Sadly, there is a lot of racism around. Thankfully, I am not friends with people like that so don't really see anything on Facebook.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/10/2022 18:24

Apparently, I'm reading that people are leaving the Tory party in droves at the moment, and joining the right-wing pro-Brexit, anti-immigant Reform UK party, one of whose founders is one N Farage, whom I blame for this mess.

OutDamnedSpot · 25/10/2022 18:24

I’ve not seen anything like this on Facebook (though i totally believe it’s there)

You need better friends.

SerendipityJane · 25/10/2022 18:24

Now people realise why the vote could not be put to Tory party members again. Why do you think they chose Truss ?

crackofdoom · 25/10/2022 18:24

ekatn
Yeah, I'm white, as are my family.
I said to my parents "You wouldn't say this stuff in front of an Asian person would you?" They were like "Why, of course not!".
THEN WHY THE FUCK IS IT ACCEPTABLE TO SAY IT BEHIND THEIR BACKS?!

You're Facebook friends with the wrong people.

PinkFrogss · 25/10/2022 18:25

daretodenim · 25/10/2022 18:11

I've not seen anything like that. I did wonder if he and his family will need higher security than former PMs though due to racists.

Basically though racism can't be stamped out by orders from above, although they can certainly take the lead. It's us down below who have to make it known that it's unacceptable. Unless we think it's not.

Totally appropriate to call people out on racism.

I hope they only buy British, made in Britain clothing, eat grown and produced/made in Britain food only, and holiday only in Britain. No pizza, pasta, Primark, curries or kebabs. No jetting off to Spain or anywhere else. And obviously that's the tip of the tip of the iceberg.

Needing higher security wouldn’t surprise me, apparently Sadiq Khan requires more security than any previous Mayor of London, which is put down to threats he gets due to his skin colour and religion.

Swedishmeatball · 25/10/2022 18:26

I’ve got around 400 friends/acquaintances on FB and I’ve not seen anything even remotely like this. You need a new social circle!

EmeraldShamrock1 · 25/10/2022 18:26

Disgusting carry on.

I'd unfriend them.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/10/2022 18:27

I haven't seen any because none of my Facebook friends are racist. If they were I would immediately unfriend them.

jonesy1999 · 25/10/2022 18:27

I haven't seen anything like this.

I think you need to rethink your friends!

PinkFrogss · 25/10/2022 18:27

Although I’m sure someone will be along to tell you people can have any views they wish, express them on FB and you’re the thought police for unfriending them and should read 1984 Hmm

Bonus points for quoting Voltaire too Grin

notacooldad · 25/10/2022 18:27

I've not seen anything like that. The only one really are things like x factor contestants lasting longer than liz truss and one iff the cat apoligizing for the shitcstorm going on in his house.
Your friends are the problem.

magma32 · 25/10/2022 18:28

yes yabu for being shocked considering he’s been subject to thinly veiled racism from the outset so of course this will be the next step as people are very pissed off.
He’s been held up higher standards than his white counterparts so it’s not surprising.
But lots will say ohhh but that’s not racism.
I hate tories but as a fellow person of colour, he has my sympathies as he’s going to have to work 10x harder than those before him to keep his job and make zero mistakes but he already knows that.

jewishmum · 25/10/2022 18:28

I saw a lot of this stuff early on when COVID was new. About Chinese people.

Didn't realise we had a new PM!

lannistunut · 25/10/2022 18:31

YABU to be shocked that people you thought were 'nice' are in fact racist. People regularly explain how much racism they encounter and loads of people say no, surely you are just being over-sensitive? - because when you are white and it isn't directed your way it is easy to pretend it is quite rare. It is comforting to think it is rare.
