To be shocked at the blatant racism on Facebook over the new pm

I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

I've seen a lot too and now a bit worried to go out in public. It was a bit of a weird time after the mayor if London too. But people soon got over it

If you think people have gotten over it you’re mistaken. Go on Twitter and see some of the racism directed at him. He also has the most security of any UK politician.

Murdoch1949 · 26/10/2022 03:52

Why do you think Truss became PM. She’s WHITE. Tory members are mainly racist twats. They didn’t get a vote this time or Mordaunt would be PM, the liar who claims she served in the Royal Navy - no she didn’t.

magma32 · 25/10/2022 18:28

yes yabu for being shocked considering he’s been subject to thinly veiled racism from the outset so of course this will be the next step as people are very pissed off.
He’s been held up higher standards than his white counterparts so it’s not surprising.
But lots will say ohhh but that’s not racism.
I hate tories but as a fellow person of colour, he has my sympathies as he’s going to have to work 10x harder than those before him to keep his job and make zero mistakes but he already knows that.

I agree

I think it is great we have a person who is Indian and is a Hindu. Shame about his politics.

Can you e plain what you don't like about his politics?

DH and I had friends who we thought were close friends, enjoyed their company, etc. On the evening of the 2016 referendum result they happened to phone. They asked how we were and we said we were obviously very upset.

Them: Oh why?
Us: Well the Brexit result of course.
Them: Oh that, we voted to leave.
Us: Why ever would you do that?
Them: because of the immigrants.

They are themselves immigrants to the UK.

We didn't speak again.

I knew someone who voted brexit despite being an immigrant. But their issue was why they had to apply for visa, do the paper work but those from EU didn't have to.

I'm really saddened that a friend of mine shared one of these memes on a WhatsApp group. Me and another friend responded that it was racist, to be met with a yawning emoticon. We are all supposed to be meeting up on Saturday and I'm seriously considering making an excuse.

Ekátn · 25/10/2022 19:40

No it’s not ‘interesting’ at all. it’s disgusting.

So again, why are you asking people to list the shitty things that have been said?

Whose ‘they’?

and who is us?

They = people making racist jokes
Us= people about whom these jokes are

Berrylina · 26/10/2022 05:36

lannistunut · 25/10/2022 18:31

YABU to be shocked that people you thought were 'nice' are in fact racist. People regularly explain how much racism they encounter and loads of people say no, surely you are just being over-sensitive? - because when you are white and it isn't directed your way it is easy to pretend it is quite rare. It is comforting to think it is rare.

There's so much on social media. I am not on Facebook but have seen a lot on twitter, TikTok, instagram etc.

There have been people boldly calling radio shows saying Rishi is not white and therefore shouldn't be PM, his colour is a problem. Apparently he is not British enough despite being born and raised here. It's been said he doesn't love the UK like Boris because he had a US Green card - I suspect due to their business ventures. But they wanted Boris who was actually born in the USA and is American and held citizenship until he was questioned about the legality of running for office in another country as a US citizen.

Boris is also Alexander Boris de Pfeffeil Kemal. His grandfather Osman Kemal from Turkey changed his name to Wilfred Johnson. He also has French, Swiss and German heritage - But Rishi is not good enough! You think Meghan Markle would stand a chance in the UK? Never!!

Posts like this always descend into posters doing back flips to show how "non racist" they are, telling everyone how they disowned their own grandmother for sharing a questionable FB post or stepped in and defended a POC in public against 50 white youths and such like. It's honestly cringeworthy. We all know racism is wrong, stop trying so hard to be a white saviour.

Has anyone actually said this? Thought not.

Posters have said what they have done and you cast them as "trying to be a white saviour". What would you rather they did? Say nothing? Do nothing? Pass by on the other side?

By the way, "We all know racism is wrong" is wrong, this thread's premise shows that some people don't/don't care.

Museya15 · 26/10/2022 05:41

Yes, it was sickening to see it. I've just seen an article about what the Russian government have said about it too. Sad times, sad world.

quoting this

She is awful isn't she. I am actually shocked that she was fired last week for misconduct and Rishi has hired her. Could have given that job to Penny or someone else.

I thought he was more inclined to be an American citizen? He's another awful choice unfortunately. Lost God knows how much during covid. Maybe that's why Liz Truss was chosen instead of him?

He had a green card - I am not sure about the background here but this was well know. I think likely due to their business ventures. If that was the reason they chose Liz Truss it's a bit strange given the previous PM Boris was born in America and held onto his passport and citizenship until it came into question in 2016! He had already been MP of Henley in 2001 and London Mayor in 2008!

Why was it ok for Boris (who is not only American but also of Turkish, Swish, French and German descent), but not Rishi who was born and raised here.

''This is why I don’t discuss racism with white people.''

But then you are also judging people based on the colour of their skin with that kind of statement.

Not all white people are racists or unwilling to challenge racist comments.

Just like sexism isn't just a ''women's issues'' or homophobia is not just an issue that LGBT people should resolve on their own.

We all have a part to play in the fight against racism.

This is triggering. Do you know how many times POC have been gaslit about racism in the UK, but we must continue to challenge our mental health by engaging in conversation? Not everyone is strong enough to continue down that never ending path.

Racism is everywhere, not just UK.

But it's Suella Braverman that leaves me gob-smacked.

Anti-immigration? Deport immigrants ?
Look in the mirror.

This is the attitude I don't get. Why should she not be anti immigration? That's to do with her politics not her race/skin colour. Are people of colour only supposed to think one way? It's the same attitude as saying Black people cant be educated. Very racist and demeaning to put whole groups into pigeon holes.

I was feeling somewhat relieved, not having seen these on my Facebook feed. Then lo and behold this evening, someone who really should know better, posted one of these - no 10 as a post office and a corner shop..headed by ‘I don’t mean to offend but this is funny’ followed by others replying to it with the curry house one, and another with shoes piled up outside (like a mosque)
I thought about it for a couple of moments, then I decided fuck it, I am going to call her out. I commented;

‘ I don’t find this amusing at all. Say what you like about the conservatives but this is downright racist. The memes are stereotyping all south Asian people as all owning corner shops or curry houses. The third meme posted is inaccurate as the PM is Hindu and not Muslim. It is offensive’

The thing is the last meme you mention is being circulated by south east Asian Hindus. My friend changed her profile picture yesterday. So what do we have here? A situation where, like the N word where only a specific group can do it but everyone else is racist? (I don’t subscribe to that personally).

Also I don’t believe it’s only Muslims who leave their shoes at the door.

MavisChunch29 · 26/10/2022 06:07

Haven't seen any of that. Ditch your racist friends.

Berrylina · 26/10/2022 06:08

@FirstandLastBorn have you seen Suella speaking about immigration? We can be tough on immigration without being rude and heartless. Some of those people are fleeing persecution in their countries. Others are economic migrants - either way they are risking lives to come here. Would you jump on a boat and risk drowning with your children? Life has to be VERY tough for anyone to consider that.

It doesn't mean we have to let them into the country. It seems very bad taste to go on national tv and make jokes and laugh at their expense. “I would love to have a front page of The Telegraph with a plane taking off to Rwanda, that’s my dream, it’s my obsession,”. Sending people to Rwanda itself is questionable.
Perhaps it's also her poor delivery/ communication and lack of professionalism.

Right!

Yep I have seen this too and deleted those sharing it. I mean what on earth. Disgusting.
