I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

@FirstandLastBorn have you seen Suella speaking about immigration? We can be tough on immigration without being rude and heartless. Some of those people are fleeing persecution in their countries. Others are economic migrants - either way they are risking lives to come here. Would you jump on a boat and risk drowning with your children? Life has to be VERY tough for anyone to consider that.

It doesn't mean we have to let them into the country. It seems very bad taste to go on national tv and make jokes and laugh at their expense. “I would love to have a front page of The Telegraph with a plane taking off to Rwanda, that’s my dream, it’s my obsession,”. Sending people to Rwanda itself is questionable.
Perhaps it's also her poor delivery/ communication and lack of professionalism.

I work in immigration, they are fed a lie by smugglers, people in their own country. They are told the UK's streets are paved with gold. Most are economic migrants.

FirstandLastBorn · 26/10/2022 06:45

@Berrylina Agreed. However, my objection was not that she has these views but that she shouldn't have these views because "has she looked at the mirror lately".

That is the same as Kwasi Kwatang being called superficially black. Are people of colour not allowed to have conservative views or be well educated?

FirstandLastBorn · 26/10/2022 06:47

Skin folk are not always kin folk.

Again. That is so racist.

Also Rishi was pro brexit! I was under the understanding that all brexit voters were racist??? Has mumsnet forgotten this? Or does it not suit the narrative?

No.

Not all Brexiters are racist but all racists are Brexiters.

MarieG10 · 26/10/2022 07:28

I'm sad to say that the unspoken reality of why he was always going to lose the Conservative Party Members vote was exactly this reason. The age profile is very much older people that tend to be unaccustomed to the change in Britain.

I'm equally sad that the Indian media are portraying it as revenge on the colonialists.

I'm really proud that he has made it as he was the best person for the job (appreciate the field of candidates was dire but reflects politics).

Ekátn · 26/10/2022 07:35

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/10/2022 07:22

No.

I voted remain and am not white. I don’t agree that all racists are brexiters.

Lots of racists had enough sense to know it wouldn’t stop people of other skin colours living here. They also had enough economic sense to know it wasn’t good overall.

Someone voting remain is not a definite sign they are not racist.

I'm really saddened that a friend of mine shared one of these memes on a WhatsApp group. Me and another friend responded that it was racist, to be met with a yawning emoticon. We are all supposed to be meeting up on Saturday and I'm seriously considering making an excuse.

Same. (Or similar.) I’ve just been kicked off the family WhatsApp group because FIL posted racist ‘jokes’ memes he’d copied from Facebook, and I pulled him up on it. I got a string of yawn emojis and middle fingers in response, and was then booted from the group. He’s a Conservative party member and even voted for Sunak in the member vote in the summer. The cognitive dissonance is extraordinary. It’s really pissed me off, he has a Pakistani DIL too who is on that group and will have seen those memes. Ignorant, racist old fuck. 😡

FoldedTowels · 26/10/2022 07:44

Like PP mentioned I’m just confused why it seems you’re somewhat not relatable/ worthy of representation if you’ve got money

FatOaf · 26/10/2022 07:45
Brefugee · 26/10/2022 07:46

i haven't seen any among friends or groups i'm in. But that's because i am not friends with racists.

If i did see it i would leave a comment that it is racist and then i would wait until they'd had a chance to see it then report the post.

Yet, on another thread yesterday, posters were supporting each other in saying that it's perfectly acceptable to express ANY opinions, no matter how racist or homophobic, within your own home, and if you didn't agree with that effectively you supported some kind of police state

where was it? I'd like to see that discussion and join in.

Sceptre86 · 26/10/2022 07:49

My sil sent the cornershop imposed on no.10 one to me. We are asian. She's an even bigger idiot than I thought she was.

BeautifulWar · 26/10/2022 07:51

Haven't seen it myself. Not for a moment denying it's happened, more that I've cut contact with the kind of scum that would post such things. The danger in that, is that you can become rather blinkered.

RampantIvy · 26/10/2022 07:57

Avelanda · 25/10/2022 18:00

My FIL shared something disgusting this morning. I’ve never heard him say anything remotely racist so it really shocked me. I wanted to call him out on it, and regret that I didn’t but it would have made things so awkward

Why didn't you report the post?
I would have no compunction about calling someone out on racist behaviour BTW.

Revolting posts like this should always be reported. These dregs of society need to be pulled up every single time.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 26/10/2022 08:01

I don't like to mock anyone's intelligence usually as I'm not the smartest person myself, however it really is stupidity, lack of critical thinking, thick people who make comments like that.

Brefugee · 26/10/2022 08:03

don't make an excuse. Tell her why. It's hard. I did that with a former friend once, i just had enough of saying "stop it that's racist" and in he end i just told her that we were done because i'm not friends with racists. Not my loss.

If British Hindus who are 2nd, 3rd generation migrants want to share those memes - I'm not going to call them out. But i won't comment either and won't "like" it (just no reaction) because I'm not about to tell people what to think (in the same way that i tend not to criticise other women's choices, as a feminist). But I do wonder at their reasoning and so on. But I'm not happy to ask about it so it just goes unremarked. Not my "fight" or place to comment, i think.

A lot of people with migrant backgrounds voted for Brexit on the assumption/hope that it might make immigration easier. Those wanting to bring over friends or family, and so on. And i really get that because why wouldn't they want to make it easier? The ones i roll my eyes at are the white racists who voted for Brexit to keep foreigners out without realising that it would mean trade deals with countries wanting more visas or visa waivers. But Brexit is a done deal and we must learn to live with it and mitigate the bad side effects as much as possible.

If i see racism here on MN? I report the post. They make a decision but i won't let things like that stand if i can do anything about it. White saviour? not sure. But I'm not a racist and i won't put up with it.

GertrudeOHara · 26/10/2022 08:05

i have seen none of these memes on social media for which I’m very thankful.

When I was watching the news just before he was announced, I felt a jolt of surprise when the voiceover commented on the fact Rishi was the first PM that wasn’t white as of course he is, but it was not even a thing anyone I know or any coverage I’d seen, had mentioned.

The last cabinet (or the second to last cabinet - under Boris anyway) was pretty diverse, so I kind of thought colour in politics is a non issue now. Troglodytes in the electorate are different obviously.

BeautifulWar · 26/10/2022 08:17

Not to make excuses for people, but the racists and bigots I went to school with were those who felt disenfranchised.

Children of absentee fathers, living on benefits - often for generations, who had little drive but mocked people who did, hated where they were in life but considered school a pile of shit and made the teachers' lives difficult, felt helpless and bullied others.

Alexandra2001 · 26/10/2022 08:26

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/10/2022 07:22

No.

Not all Brexiters are racist but all racists are Brexiters.

Why would the colour of someone's skin preclude them from being racist? India has huge issues with racism.

Its not just a "white" problem.

On a wider note... the Tory party deliberate set the rules to make sure the membership never had the final say on the choice of PM, otherwise we would have Mordaunt as PM.

doittwice · 26/10/2022 08:28

Thankfully I haven't come across any nasty racist memes or posts on my social media and if I did, I would have called it out, reported it and deleted that person.

KeyboardBotherer · 26/10/2022 08:33

God, how depressing. Happy to say that I haven't seen any of this rubbish on social media.

JingsMahBucket · 26/10/2022 08:58

You think Meghan Markle would stand a chance in the UK? Never!!

@Berrylina yeah, a lot of UK and US Black folks on Twitter yesterday were saying buckle up because Rishi Sunak was about to get the Meghan Markle treatment by the UK press and populace. We are unfortunately, not disappointed.

Holidayexpert · 26/10/2022 09:05

I think as soon as Sunak puts a foot wrong in the eyes of say the ERG, or the tories who would never vote for him, or indeed the right wing Tory friendly press, the racism is going to be notched up to a whole other level.

it’s so ironic that a lot of the racism comes from the daily Mail reading tories, the very people he is trying to appease!
He doesn’t stand a chance! I saw Liz trusses daughters described as doughy faced yesterday and sunak’s kids as the little princesses!
You ain’t seen nothing yet!!

Ineedwinenow · 26/10/2022 09:27

I’m white but married into an Asian family, you sadly hear a lot about racism which is towards the black community but not so much towards Asians ( probably because a lot of the time they don’t speak up) but it’s rife and just as prolific as what the black community go through!

I too have seen the FB posts your talking about and I made it known quite clearly it wasn’t acceptable and also reported them, it upset me on his behalf, my families behalf and the wider community! I’m sorry that all of you are experiencing racism today whether it’s due to skin colour or religion! It’s not acceptable and there should be harsher punishments in place.

Derrymare · 26/10/2022 09:47

I've also seen alot of this on Facebook and tiktok but say anything and you get ganged upon. People are so nasty.
