To be shocked at the blatant racism on Facebook over the new pm

I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

My dad is South Asian. I am not at all surprised.

People often notice I don’t look like I am from the UK but usually guess that I am greek or Spanish or Italian. So I get to hear and see a lot of racism against South Asians as people aren’t on their guard around me and say things they wouldn’t if you could immediately spot my heritage. It’s not always white people either.

I'm so sorry you have to experience this. It disgusts me.

jetadore · 25/10/2022 18:34

It’s just bantz innit? Hilarious racist bantz from the superior country that likes to preach to the rest of the world about how to behave.

MightyOaks · 25/10/2022 18:34

I honestly wish Facebook would remove that awful 'laughing' reaction. It infuriates me when I see a post about an injured animal or murdered children for example and some evil bastards have 'laughed' at it

Welcome to the daily reality of being brown.

There is a big ‘movement’ of antisemitism at the moment fueled by Kanye West, very very strange.

Suemademedoit · 25/10/2022 18:35

I think we should expect a big rise in far-right political parties' numbers at this point.

MightyOaks · 25/10/2022 18:36

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/10/2022 18:24

Apparently, I'm reading that people are leaving the Tory party in droves at the moment, and joining the right-wing pro-Brexit, anti-immigant Reform UK party, one of whose founders is one N Farage, whom I blame for this mess.

Then you've misread! Most of those who have left today, have done so amicably and have commended Sunak

RisingSunn · 25/10/2022 18:37

Unfortunately I am not shocked at all. People like this are your teachers, police, social workers, your doctor , your nice neighbour…

Very unfortunate.

I didn't know about the recent antisemitism movement, but we are currently being harassed every few days by our chav neighbours about being Jewish, luckily we have them on our Ring doorbell doing it.

Darbs76 · 25/10/2022 18:38

Not seen any of that on my FB. But that’s probably because I’ve already deleted the racists on my page. I did see someone talking about the corner shop thing and to be honest it didn’t surprise me. The U.K. has a lot of racists around and the mayor of london has been subject to a lot of the same issues since he came to office. It disgusts me, straight into the delete pile

CustardySergeant · 25/10/2022 18:39

jewishmum · 25/10/2022 18:28

I saw a lot of this stuff early on when COVID was new. About Chinese people.

Didn't realise we had a new PM!

How did you not realise we had a new PM? 😕

Wibbly1008 · 25/10/2022 18:39

Racism is a form of evil bred from ignorance and stupidity. Call it out, otherwise it’s spreads like a disease.

@Ekátn that's interesting. What kind of things do they say?

honestlove · 25/10/2022 18:42

Also what exactly are they racist about? Have they seen their own kind? Truss, Johnson?

Darbs76 · 25/10/2022 18:43

I will add though that some of the apparent jokes that I’ve seen circulated with this kind of ‘content’ are shared by my ex partner and his family who are all of south Asian descent themselves. So it’s not just white communities sharing this stuff. Doesn’t make it any better, but just sharing that

DogInATent · 25/10/2022 18:44

So what are you going to do about it?

You're seeing their comments in your feed only because you choose to define them as 'friends' on social media. You've now seen them for what they are. You've called them out on it and they've doubled-down. The next move is yours - challenge them again, or just block, move on, and focus on your genuine friends.

The latter. They have proved themselves to be ignorant and thick as mince

No, I'm not surprised, sadly. I don't welcome any Conservative as Prime Minister, but it's disgusting to bring race into the question. If I hear any racist attacks on Sunak I will challenge them.

Artygirlghost · 25/10/2022 18:50

@phishy · Today 18:13

''This is why I don’t discuss racism with white people.''

But then you are also judging people based on the colour of their skin with that kind of statement.

Not all white people are racists or unwilling to challenge racist comments.

Just like sexism isn't just a ''women's issues'' or homophobia is not just an issue that LGBT people should resolve on their own.

We all have a part to play in the fight against racism.

IntentionalError · 25/10/2022 18:54

I’m not a prolific user of social media, but I haven’t seen any racist posts about Sunak. Plenty of abuse of Tories in general, but not racist abuse.

Perhaps you need a better class of FB ‘friends’, OP?

Georgyporky · 25/10/2022 18:54

Racism is everywhere, not just UK.

But it's Suella Braverman that leaves me gob-smacked.

Anti-immigration? Deport immigrants ?
Look in the mirror.

Just not wanting to take the chance is understandable, tho.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 25/10/2022 18:56

Not calling out racism when you see it, not ending friendships with racists and not going NC with racist family members - these are all racist acts.

"I'm not racist but my FiL is so we don't discuss race when we visit" = something only a racist person could say. Racism is not a thing that can be accepted if you ignore it.

UneFoisAuChalet · 25/10/2022 18:57

My friend’s partner exposed himself on Facebook during the BLM days. He shared a clip of some Asian guys getting beaten with the caption ‘we need to see this more often’.

Many of us promptly unfriended him without any fuss. She or he must have realised that he had “lost friends’ over the course of the week and she wrote this long, apologetic message on our group chat (he didn’t realise, he just shares things without looking, blah blah blah - the lady doth protest too much kinda thing). We all told her what we think and that we simply don’t want to see any of his racist, sexist, fascist shit any longer (he has form for this).

We naively thought this may be THE moment when she finally decided to ditch him. He’s cheated, lied, takes her money, drives her car etc… but no. He’s still around, however, he never ever shows his face when we have get together as couples. He’s sick or working or whatever. And no invitations are ever extending towards him. We treat him with the contempt he deserves.

It’s very disappointing that Rishi (despite how he got there) isn’t the UK’s Obama moment.

Longerthanfiveweeks · 25/10/2022 18:03

Have you called them out on it OP?

Yes I'm keen to know this as well
