To be shocked at the blatant racism on Facebook over the new pm

I have seen multiple posts from different people which are just disgusting. Photos of curry houses and corner shops superimposed over number 10. Speech bubbles from the cat saying "Fuck. I am leaving. I don't want to be turned into a curry". I mean wtf? And people are liking and guffawing over it. I have literally seen only 1 woman calling them out on this. A friend of this friend.

Time for a cull I think

In what way?

Unless you are one of those people who think people of colour are all the same, so should think the same and consider each other to be the same. As a POC she is definitely not kin folk. Kin folk have the same values as I do regardless of skin colour.

This is the attitude I don't get. Why should she not be anti immigration? That's to do with her politics not her race/skin colour. Are people of colour only supposed to think one way? It's the same attitude as saying Black people cant be educated. Very racist and demeaning to put whole groups into pigeon holes.

Because she should be able to empathise with people wanting to immigrate to the UK and the positive impact they can have to the country considering that's what her parents did.

Also, your comparison makes no sense. But I can see that some posters are very angry, understandably so, and that's what make them respond to other posts in reactive and frustated way rather than stay objective.

MinervaVeta · 26/10/2022 13:29

I'm calling it out. It makes me feel ashamed to be British.

AquaticSewingMachine · 26/10/2022 13:30

You could legitimately think that the case for immigration for people from certain areas/with certain skillsets was different decades ago when your parents or grandparents arrived. That is not what I believe, just for clarity, but it's a consistent position and politicians have to deal with the brute practicalities of immigration and not just the highbrow morality. I don't see that a British-born person is morally obligated to approve of unrestricted immigration in the year 2022.

Brefugee · 26/10/2022 13:31

but i get people's point when they say it is racist to assume that just because her parents were immigrants she should think a particular way. I'm completely against her politics, but the expectation that she has x background and therefore should have y attitude is shitty. (she is so fucking wrong though)

Kamia · 26/10/2022 13:47

We should celebrate our first Asian PM but I'm sick of this government.

TarasHarp55 · 26/10/2022 13:53

I'm sure he's going to be better than the last one, but he is a Tory so won't hold my breath. Let's hope most people will judge him on his policies not his race. But I imagine a lot of people might hold back in case they're accused of racism.

Countdown2023 · 26/10/2022 14:30

I made the mistake of going back onto Twitter and really regret that I did - it is a cesspit and enough to suck the living soul out. Awful things being said which were borderline racist and sexist remarks. Lots of comments about the new cabinet appointments seemed to revolve around what people were wearing, body shaming, hair style etc. some people may call it banter but it is all about bullying and intimidation

Fuwari · 26/10/2022 14:55

A (not close) relative of mine posted the cat/curry one on FB and I was really shocked. But then I thought about it and realised it is total ignorance. They've grown up somewhere that's 99.9% white, not very well educated, living amongst others that share the same views. They won't change.

I know I could/should say something, or block them, but I'm not in the right head space to deal with the fallout. It's not someone I have a lot to do with anyway (the fallout would come within the wider family).

I don't know what the answer is. Confronting people just seems to make them "double down" on their beliefs. I never see anyone saying "actually you're right and I will be a better person". They just surround themselves with people who think the same as them.

I work in immigration, they are fed a lie by smugglers, people in their own country. They are told the UK's streets are paved with gold. Most are economic migrants.

My point being we don't laugh at their expense on national TV like Suella. We don't have to take them in if we can't look after them, but we shouldn't laugh at them either.
What about the bombs dropping in Syria - which we sell to those attacking them. We can't take those people in either right? But we can house Ukranians while we send Syrians etc to Rwanda.

Maybe don't "confront" them but just have a normal conversation?

And yes, they may not change, but you will have at least dropped a seed of an idea. Otherwise they really will hear no one else apart from their echo chamber.

well it's not überconfrontational to say "oi, mate, that's racist" or however you usually communicate with them. And then go about your day.

I haven't seen anything about Sunak but a while ago an ex military mate (I'm also ex-military, i have heard "jokes" that would make your toes curl - i'm not a shrinking violet in other words) posted something that was misogynistic. So i said: oi, mate, pack it in with the misogynistic shit.

And he did the "bantz, innit" thing - so i unfriended on fb so i don't run the chance of seeing shit like that again. It isn't really difficult. If family members post racist memes in our WA groups? I say "Uncle Fester, that's racist. I'd rather not see things like that". I've left family groups where Uncle Fester and his brother didn't see the harm, so i don't see them, they know i think they're racists. No confrontation - just statements.

I don't like to mock anyone's intelligence usually as I'm not the smartest person myself, however it really is stupidity, lack of critical thinking, thick people who make comments like that.

I feel the same when people say strangely stupid things. It's not my job to educate people about racism. Almost seems as though you undermine their intelligence. However, I think I feel strongly enough that if anyone in my circle said anything ridiculous I would ask why they shared it.

Lalalolol · 26/10/2022 19:11

Alexandra2001 · 26/10/2022 08:26

Why would the colour of someone's skin preclude them from being racist? India has huge issues with racism.

Its not just a "white" problem.

On a wider note... the Tory party deliberate set the rules to make sure the membership never had the final say on the choice of PM, otherwise we would have Mordaunt as PM.

Why it is better that members vote over MP's vote?

None of these 2 scenario is same as electing a PM through GE.

So let's give Sunak a chance to do something, rather than complain Mordabt didnt become PM. What was her manifesto? Atleast Sunak warned us about Truss's tax policies and he was right.

Members chose Liz Truss and we saw what happened.

Because if the members chose someone that the parliamentary party couldn't support, things would be back to square one. And they're a laughing stock already for the number of leader changes in the last six years/months.

So then MPs choosing PM is better than members choosing. Then why pp is upset that voting didnt go to members which would have resulted in Penny Mordant being PM?
