In Tesco today. Birds Eye normal code fish fingers. 30 pack, so the largest of the standard size packets but not a huge pack. And they were £7.50!! How much?! For bloody fish fingers!

I asked the lady on the check out till and she couldn't believe it either.

I expected them to be about £4. I bought Tesco own at £3.30.

AIBU to think that a what should be a cheap family staple should not be seven pounds bloody 50? And why?

What else is going to rocket in price?

People are going to be relying on cheap carbs and ultra processed foods. Doctors are predicting the health crisis that we will be hitting early next year.

We had this exact thread a few days ago did we not? Almost word for word?

still a ridiculous price

Edinvillian · 30/08/2022 00:08

That's for the cod ones, the normal ones are cheaper. I just buy Asda's own version.

planedelay · 30/08/2022 00:09

Oh sorry I didn't see the other thread. Glad it's not just me though.

In Iceland the box of 30 birdseye fishfingers is £4.40 but two boxes for £8 if you have one near you/can get a delivery from them.

abovedecknotbelow · 30/08/2022 00:30

It's cod though, the pollock ones are cheaper. Sustainable fishing and all that. Cod has been been expensive for ages.

abovedecknotbelow · 30/08/2022 00:31

I doubt the Tesco ones were cod.

viques · 30/08/2022 00:38

As the old joke (nearly) goes, it’s the peace price of cod that passes all understanding.

TheUsualChaos · 30/08/2022 00:41

Well tbf, they should be expensive. Eating fish as an cheap protein source is environmentally unsustainable.

planedelay · 30/08/2022 00:46

Yes they were cod.

Yeah we get the"fish" fingers now rather than the specifically cod ones, no idea what it is but it cooks the same.

mackthepony · 30/08/2022 00:57

Crikey

TheTeenageYears · 30/08/2022 01:21

Cod fillet fish fingers have been fairly pricey if bought at full price for several years. The variations of either/all of on offer, own brand, not cod have probably masked what's actually been the case for a long time.

SpacePotato · 30/08/2022 02:13

Even the youngs fishy dippers that a year ago were £1 are now up to £1.75 a box.

MissingNashville · 30/08/2022 02:24

They’re processed shite that you don’t actually need so don’t buy them. But in fairness, there’s 30 of them, that’s quite a lot. Fish are better alive though. 🤭

This!😂

It’s funny because I was buying the £7.50 ones for a while and stopped and think. DD doesn’t know the difference between name brand and non name brand fish.

I now get a bag of 28 for £2.25 from Iceland

brightnesses · 30/08/2022 02:32

Oh and as that poster said, no clue what’s in them but they taste and cook the same (and I don’t even like fish fingers)

WARNING
I apologise in advance to vegetarians and vegans as my post is going to be about Steaks and I do not wish to offend anybody so please do not continue to read on if you will be offended by me eating meat.

So I was in Asda last week and picked up 2 sirloin steaks individually packed and put them in my trolley.I didn’t even look at the price as I have bought the same steaks for the last 6 years but when I got to the check out and paid and checked my receipt as usual I was shocked to see the steaks were £9 each 😱

So yes of course I questioned the £9 steaks and was told that’s the price and did I want a manager etc, which I said No and to just remove them from my bill.

Who is going to pay £9 for 1 steak ??
Not Me .

MissingNashville · 30/08/2022 03:03

@avamiah For vegans and vegetarians, hearing people are going to be buying less animal products is good news. 😊

avamiah · 30/08/2022 03:32

@MissingNashville
Well it looks that way here in London.
I have been eating pasta and omelettes and to be honest with you I haven’t missed eating a steak.

ShirleyJackson · 30/08/2022 03:37

Did we just have a trigger warning for eating meat?

Belledan1 · 30/08/2022 03:53

Shirleyjackson .Yes we did lol. I was expecting the next paragraph to be about a slaughter house or something not the price !

avamiah · 30/08/2022 04:20

@Belledan1
Hahaha

Its my fault and the £9 Asda steaks.🫣

GiltEdges · 30/08/2022 05:34

Admittedly I don’t buy meat or fish very often, but is £7.50 really such a terrible price for THIRTY fish fingers?

Even if you had a fairly average family of 2 adults and 2 children, you’re probably talking about 12 fish fingers per meal, so 2.5 meals per box/£3 per meal.

That doesn’t seem awful? 🤷🏼‍♀️
