Pack of Birds Eye Fish Fingers £7.50 !! WTF?

planedelay · 30/08/2022 00:00

In Tesco today. Birds Eye normal code fish fingers. 30 pack, so the largest of the standard size packets but not a huge pack. And they were £7.50!! How much?! For bloody fish fingers!

I asked the lady on the check out till and she couldn't believe it either.

I expected them to be about £4. I bought Tesco own at £3.30.

AIBU to think that a what should be a cheap family staple should not be seven pounds bloody 50? And why?

What else is going to rocket in price?

Looking into it further, own brand is better quality too.

Birds Eye cod fish fingers are 58% cod and the box is 840 g.
Iceland cod fish fingers are 63% cod and the box is 900 g for £5.
Asda cod fish fingers are 64% cod and the box is 900 g for £5.50

Tesco don't appear to do own brand cod fish fingers but the own brand ones are pollock and 64% fish for less than half the price of the infamous £7.50 BE cod version.

Brands being better quality is often a complete lie. You're paying for advertising and a larger profit margin usually.

Tesco own brand Cod fish fingers are currently out of stock, except for their "finest" 6 for £3.15 (400g) equivalent to £7.09 for 900g

Their standard frozen Cod Fish Fingers were 10 for £1.85 (300g) when I bought some earlier in August, making them £5.55 for 900g (see pic)

They also sometimes stock fresh Cod Fingers, 6 for £2.75 (300g). Those at £3.30 for 900g are definitely Alaska Pollock.

It was £6.20 for 20 birds eye fish fingers last time I looked. Admittedly in Waitrose)

I don't eat meat or fish but shop for my mum and am always surprised (and not in a good way) how expensive meat and fish are. Fish fingers are a staple for her and her troublesome digestive system. Sometimes I get tuna for the cats who visit us (owner knows and is ok with it) and it's a dear do. I've bought Asda own brand but it's just not as good as John West. It looks quite different and is watery with smaller bits rather than big flakes. The cats don't really give a shit but they get more tuna for my money with John west tuna.

Jalepenojello · 30/08/2022 22:40

Asda own has a higher percentage of fish and is cheaper.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with increasing the price of meat/fish personally, if it comes with better standards although I suspect that isn’t the case

Did we just have a trigger warning for eating meat?

Yes so I’ll expect a warning now from vegans before that start spouting.
thanks in advance.

Get a grip. I know the default setting is that vegans foist their shit on everyone, but that trigger warning was from a meat eater, so take it up with her.

WARNING
I apologise in advance to vegetarians and vegans as my post is going to be about Steaks and I do not wish to offend anybody so please do not continue to read on if you will be offended by me eating meat.

So I was in Asda last week and picked up 2 sirloin steaks individually packed and put them in my trolley.I didn’t even look at the price as I have bought the same steaks for the last 6 years but when I got to the check out and paid and checked my receipt as usual I was shocked to see the steaks were £9 each 😱

So yes of course I questioned the £9 steaks and was told that’s the price and did I want a manager etc, which I said No and to just remove them from my bill.

Who is going to pay £9 for 1 steak ??
Not Me .

2 for£8 in tesco. And thats the highest price yet

myfaceismyown · 31/08/2022 18:54

You will probably jump on me for this but have never given the DCs fish fingers. I just buy the cheapest fish at the fishmonger, cut into strips, toss in seasoned flour and shallow fry for a couple of mins. It meant I could give them oily fish - mackerel, herring, whiting which are very abundant around our shores as well as white fish like pollock. Sometimes I bought the pollock fillets frozen, but always did a mix of fish. Only time it got me in trouble was when DD was at primary school when they were talking about what they ate the night before in her French lesson.... and said we ate goujons. Should have called them fish strips

VladmirsPoutine · 31/08/2022 18:54

My question is not about food being ridiculously expensive because yes it is, it's about the shopping element. Even before all of this as I went round the supermarket I'd always check the price of what I was buying so by the time I got to the till it wasn't a shock - and this includes name brands and whatever else. So have people just been always shopping by what they fancy and having no idea what they'll owe till they get to the till?

Twopandemicpregnancies · 31/08/2022 19:20

Am amazed people think 2 fish fingers per person is enough….my 2 year old DD eats 4 and then asks for more! I daren’t say how many DP eats 🙈

myfaceismyown · 31/08/2022 19:38

@Twopandemicpregnancies competitive undereating is a MN ritual. Someone probably slices them into 1 cm pieces and can feed a family of 4 for a week!
On a serious note. Advice from an older mum. What ever the protein element is you want it to be a third, then third carbs, third veg. So although we had our own fish sticks, we would have some type of pulse, rice or potato, and then carrots, peas (or other legumes) brocolli etc for the final third.
If your 2 year old tuns her nose up at the veg and wants just the fish fingers, please remember the 15 rule. Give your child a "new" food 15 times and they think its is "normal". Really works.

Just as the next Tory PM privatises the NHS.

I literally just noticed the price of fish in Asda today! It seems to be through the roof.

Seriously, I lived in the next street when this was put up. I worked in the petrol station at the road end. We saw the crane arrive to place it. Robert Maxwell was alive and kicking then and I had to put petrol in his car on a few occasions.

@avamiah For vegans and vegetarians, hearing people are going to be buying less animal products is good news. 😊

It’s the only silver lining in this awful crisis

AnnieSnap · 01/09/2022 00:35

Trafficlight127 · 30/08/2022 06:46

I always try to get vegetarian or vegan versions of junk food where possible. So vegan sausages instead of meat etc. And it’s usually more expensive than the meat version.
I found vegan fish fingers for the first time recently and was surprised that in this case the vegan version was half the price.
so from now on we will be eating vegan fish fingers

That will be because you can get particularly cheap meat sausages. They are made with reclaimed meat from the bones though. Vegetarian sausages are made with Soya or Quorn protein which isn’t the last dregs equivalent. If you compare them with premium sausages, which have some better quality meat in addition to the reclaimed rubbish, the prices are much higher.

sjpkgp1 · 01/09/2022 01:06

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 30/08/2022 07:15

posting trigger warnings before talking about meat is ridiculous.

Incidently, I bought thin sirloins in sainsburys the other day for £2.50.

And £7.50 really isn’t that expensive for 30 fish fingers and the thread title is misleading. You’re buying a massive box of fish fingers and are then shocked they cost more?

Absolutely you’re paying for a brand and there’s no reason to, but this is causing hysteria for no reason.

And wtf is it with vegans talking about vegan fish fingers, vegan chicken nuggets, vegan steaks <insert meat of choice. If you’re a vegan you don’t eat meat so there is no such thing as vegan steak or vegan fish. Just call it like it is. Vegan fingers.

I think saying "vegan fish fingers", "vegan sausages" "vegan cheese" etc. is quite useful actually. I'm not a vegan, but my OH and DS have recently become vegan. They enjoy most things (regardless of whether it is a mimic of non-vegan products or not) I like fish and meat, but would happily try a vegan alternative, easier all round because I know I am serving something that IS vegan for them, and I sort of recognise it for what it is meant to be. If vegan people / society wants more people to become vegans then making it more mainstream is probably preferable than turning a shopping trip into a dark art for the uninitiated.

I’m a vege and this just made me laugh, love it

Why? Don’t you know how bad for the environment the demand for avocados is?
tbf, I don’t know about cartels involvement lol

Twopandemicpregnancies · 01/09/2022 03:36

Luckily she loves veg too - yesterday she had carrots, green beans and peas with her fish fingers. Getting her to eat potatoes is much more challenging however 🙄

Twopandemicpregnancies · 01/09/2022 03:38

the 15 rule really doesn';t work... numerous trips to see a hospital consultant and even they eventually gave up and said to let him eat as much of his few self restricted foods as he wanted. Which are odd to say to least but mostly cover the food groups with a little help from a twice a week crushing of a multivit tab into his brown sauce! Consultant promised he'd not starve and would grow out of it eventually.. almost 16 and he hasn't yet lol but he has grown very tall and strapping albeit on the skinny side, and just excelled in his exams.

Beg to differ to those saying food “ very cheap” until recently here. If that were the case we wouldn’t see tenfold ( and more) increase in food banks over past 10 years. Regardless of fish/ meat costs it makes me want to cry when I visit Italy and Greece and see fresh fruit and veg at a fraction of our costs. Recent examples : giant watermelon 1 euro ( double the size of our ave supermarket ones) ; big pasta packs 50 cents; cucumbers 20-30 cents; even litre bottles water 20 cents ( I know that’s not essential food!). If it was purely down to fuel and Russia all countries would be similar surely? Feel we are being conned into just accepting “ that’s the way it is”- the hideous price rises here are surely partly down to massively profiteering supermarkets, loss of ( cheaper immigrant) farming labour, Brexit resulting in import taxes/ extra paperwork etc. Plus our usual weather combined with encouraged and heavily marketed shopping habits ( to buy processed and out of season) mean many people have no idea what’s currently in season and grown locally so in theory cheaper.

Pinkpeony2 · 30/08/2022 09:10

  1. Yes it does seem expensive but it’s cod. People need to eat less cod as their are in short supply.
  2. Most of that fish finger is just a breadcrumb IME.
  3. How can anyone say 2 fish fingers is enough protein for a meal? Even my 7 year old has 3. DH would need about 5 to even touch the sides! (None of us over eat or are overweight just in case you think we eat over the average daily calories generally!) There just really isn’t much fish there fle
  4. the money!

Thought it was just me who thinks 2 fish fingers is extreme dieting🤭

But the watermelons in Greece are grown down the road.

Watermelons if grown in the Uk will require intensive farming in poly tunnels. That makes them more expensive. Same with cucumbers, figs etc.

Bottled water in Greece is the norm as tap water can be unreliable. It’s not comparable to bottled water here which is completely unnecessary.

myfaceismyown · 01/09/2022 10:19

@LittleBearPad when I had a PT for a bit he was trying to tell me that bottled water his company sold was better for me than tap water. He had a little gadget to prove it - tested my Derbyshire tap water and it was purer than his!! Laughed my trainers off!
