planedelay · 30/08/2022 00:00

In Tesco today. Birds Eye normal code fish fingers. 30 pack, so the largest of the standard size packets but not a huge pack. And they were £7.50!! How much?! For bloody fish fingers!

I asked the lady on the check out till and she couldn't believe it either.

I expected them to be about £4. I bought Tesco own at £3.30.

AIBU to think that a what should be a cheap family staple should not be seven pounds bloody 50? And why?

What else is going to rocket in price?

Everything will sky rocket in price. I know someone who runs a shop and his energy costs were 18k a year. He's expecting them to increase to 80k per year. He can't absorb that cost so will have to pass it on or close down.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/08/2022 08:35

@toomuchlaundry perhaps this has a little to do with it.

The price of fish is, as regretable as this sounds, something that should be more expensive than we have been used to.
It has been far too cheap for too long and our oceans are decimated.
Watch seaspiracy Sad.

Beautiful3 · 30/08/2022 08:36

I know I was shocked too. I ended up buying supermarkets own. I do my gathers shopping and he asked why his shop was so expensive, Is gone up from £13 per week. I had to explain the prices were going up, and he prefers brands. He was quite shocked.

Fifife · 30/08/2022 08:37

People complaining stuff is too cheap what are the less wealthy going to eat ? Beans on toast every night ? Seafood is not very cheap here it's more expensive than Greece but Greece is more expensive for some other things.

Just checked it's Mexican avocados that are linked to the cartel. We get ours in the UK from Spain etc. Sorry if you're in the USA though.

Ah right OK didn't realise that. I think Israel grows a lot too. I might start eating them again thanks.

You'd have to be a complete idiot to believe that Brexit was ever going to be a good thing for Cornish fishermen.

People can say all sorts. Doesn't make it true.

chillipenguin · 30/08/2022 08:38

Veggie fingers are a nice alternative - they don't have many veg in though.

Fifife · 30/08/2022 08:38

Silver linings I've noticed lurpak has come down from £5 to 3.75 not enough people must have been buying it.

DogInATent · 30/08/2022 08:41

toomuchlaundry · 30/08/2022 08:14

Are we not surrounded by white fish, why do we need to get it from Russia?

No. Stocks of cod in UK waters are massively over-fished, and some populations are at risk of collapse. It really doesn't help that UK consumers only really recognise about six species of fish as worth eating.

LuciferRising · 30/08/2022 08:41

I do think meat and fish should be expensive so that people eat far less. Cheap heavily processed meat is unhealthy, unethical, and bad for the environment. We don't need it.

Pulses and vegetables make very cheap meals. A can of chick peas is pence, add some veg, and spices, and it makes a very cheap meal.

Chickpeas are going up too

No we're not

Or at least, not the kind of white fish that idiot British consumers are prepared to eat

The sea is emptying of fish at a terrifying rate.

“the sea is emptying of fish at a terrifying rate”

This isn’t untrue @HesterShaw1, but if you look at the latest FAO data 80 of fish landed globally comes from stocks that are classed as sustainable (aka stocks where we are not catching the fish at a rate faster than the fish can replace themselves) and it’s been proven that fish stocks that were once overfished can replenish if they are carefully and scientifically managed.

So in theory we can reverse overfishing, the way to do it is just to preferentially buy fish that comes from sustainable sources and ideally that is MSC or ASC certified, so that more retailers get the message and commit to sourcing sustainable fish, and more fisheries then switch to operating sustainably.

Pretty much all wild caught or farmer fish also has way lower carbon emissions than meat, so eating more fish as a source of protein is also good for the environment.

Unfortunately with a big cost of living crisis coming, some people are more likely to preference cost over sustainability and go for cheap unsustainable products across the board - which is understandable but only makes things worse in the long run.

CuriousMama · 30/08/2022 08:54

I made burnt aubergine chilli yesterday. Aubergine was 75p. Lentils carrots 1 red onion. Tin toms and tin kidney beans. Lots of different spices but once bought you have them for a few meals. We had them in. Anyway had a large portion each and there's probably enough left for 3. We did have to use the camping stove to char the aubergine. Rest done on the hob or can slow cook. It's really nice.

My wtf moment in the supermarket this weekend was £3.45 for 10 cadburys mini rolls

That is good imo. They are nothing but sugary junk anyway.

fannyfan · 30/08/2022 09:00

a trigger warning about eating meat is the most mn thing I've ever seen

mattressspring · 30/08/2022 09:04

You are comparing cod with pollock.

Doris86 · 30/08/2022 09:08

Is that the Tesco over inflated price, before they add the club card ‘discount’ to bring it down to the same price as other shops?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/08/2022 09:09

oh i love burnt aubergine chilli @CuriousMama

Rosscameasdoody · 30/08/2022 09:09

TheUsualChaos · 30/08/2022 00:41

Well tbf, they should be expensive. Eating fish as an cheap protein source is environmentally unsustainable.

I doubt whether that’s going to be high on anyones’ list of priorities any more if they’re choosing between heating and eating. And if they are, look for the MSC packaging.

Pinkpeony2 · 30/08/2022 09:10
  1. Yes it does seem expensive but it’s cod. People need to eat less cod as their are in short supply.
  2. Most of that fish finger is just a breadcrumb IME.
  3. How can anyone say 2 fish fingers is enough protein for a meal? Even my 7 year old has 3. DH would need about 5 to even touch the sides! (None of us over eat or are overweight just in case you think we eat over the average daily calories generally!) There just really isn’t much fish there fle
  4. the money!
OppsUpsSide · 30/08/2022 09:11

I honestly thought 30 birdseye cod fishfingers was £7.50 already. It’s branded, it’s cod, and there’s 30 of them.

Greeneyegirl · 30/08/2022 09:11

More shocked that the OP refers to fish fingers as a "family staple". Maybe I was a horribly treated child but fish fingers to me are the same as chicken nuggets, chips and sausage rolls. Junk/party food that you have once in a blue moon. Surely not a family staple (like rice, mince, etc.)
