Pack of Birds Eye Fish Fingers £7.50 !! WTF?

planedelay · 30/08/2022 00:00

In Tesco today. Birds Eye normal code fish fingers. 30 pack, so the largest of the standard size packets but not a huge pack. And they were £7.50!! How much?! For bloody fish fingers!

I asked the lady on the check out till and she couldn't believe it either.

I expected them to be about £4. I bought Tesco own at £3.30.

AIBU to think that a what should be a cheap family staple should not be seven pounds bloody 50? And why?

What else is going to rocket in price?

I haven’t bought meat or fish for about 3 years - started doing it to save money & now I can’t eat it as makes me feel sick thinking about eating animals.

But I’m amazed so many people who are trying to cut back haven’t done this as the first thing to go - decent meat/fish has been expensive for a long time and isn’t remotely necessary so seems to me to be the first thing to go to save cash. plus no-one dies in the process - result!

My DC have legume, dairy and egg allergies. They need meat and fish for protein.

Is there a bit of competitive under eating going on? 3 fish fingers or 2 chunky ones is enough? My husband eats 10 and I can eat 6 so don’t last long in this house

hangrylady · 30/08/2022 10:04

£1.55 for 10 breaded cod fish fingers in Aldi. If you go for brand names then you'll always pay more.

RingtheBells1 · 30/08/2022 10:05

Fishfingers are like a snack food like cheese on toast, DH generally has 4 between 2 slices of bread.

Well yes, the £9 steak is a large one and a lot more than what I would eat, but it's what DP likes and comparable to what you get served in a pub. I got him the £7 rib eye, but I did notice that there were steaks up to £11/12 in the range.

The Waitrose 3 for £10 is an offer though.

Perfectly possible to spend a lot more on a steak without thinking too hard about it.

No, I would say that you and your DH are the unusual ones, portion sizes wise. Unless of course you aren’t having much else with them.

The British Heart Foundation publishes portion size guides and actually states that 3 fish fingers (once a week) is an adult portion

I wouldn't say most people are eating 6 or 10 fish fingers at a time- that's pretty excessive but each to their own.

Oh. So when I’m over a certain age there are some foods I can’t eat? How miserable.

In Iceland the box of 30 birdseye fishfingers is £4.40 but two boxes for £8 if you have one near you/can get a delivery from them.

wow top tip think I’ll order a delivery from them, my son will only eat birds eye

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/08/2022 10:24

@PriamFarrl
hmm of course you can but what is the point of 6 fishfingers, or 10? you could just have breaded cod?

FrancescaContini · 30/08/2022 10:27

Just don’t buy them then. It’s easy.

emotionsecho · 30/08/2022 10:27

juggleit · 30/08/2022 06:51

We are very used to cheap food in this country. The next few years will be a wake up call.

Exactly. Meat, fish and dairy shouldn't be cheap.

eyeroller1 · 30/08/2022 10:28

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 30/08/2022 07:15

posting trigger warnings before talking about meat is ridiculous.

Incidently, I bought thin sirloins in sainsburys the other day for £2.50.

And £7.50 really isn’t that expensive for 30 fish fingers and the thread title is misleading. You’re buying a massive box of fish fingers and are then shocked they cost more?

Absolutely you’re paying for a brand and there’s no reason to, but this is causing hysteria for no reason.

And wtf is it with vegans talking about vegan fish fingers, vegan chicken nuggets, vegan steaks <insert meat of choice. If you’re a vegan you don’t eat meat so there is no such thing as vegan steak or vegan fish. Just call it like it is. Vegan fingers.

i agree defo need rebranding and I’m a vegetarian but calling something “vegan fingers” sounds like u chopped someone’s fingers off 😂 can’t imagine they would sell 😀also agree w pp fish are better off left for environmental reasons we need to change practices.

PeasOff · 30/08/2022 10:30

If you want to buy branded foods expect to pay branded prices - there are cheaper alternatives available.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/08/2022 10:34

MissingNashville · 30/08/2022 02:24

They’re processed shite that you don’t actually need so don’t buy them. But in fairness, there’s 30 of them, that’s quite a lot. Fish are better alive though. 🤭

💩Ugh... and I thought they were cod!

ancientgran · 30/08/2022 10:40

I've developed a love of Sainsbury's Taste the Difference chunky cod fish fingers and they are £3.75 for 8. I can't eat Birds Eye anymore.

Zumatalaa · 30/08/2022 10:53

Who is going to pay £9 for 1 steak ??

Me. Not that I eat red meat regularly, but I expect to pay at least that for a decent quality steak.

LetHimHaveIt · 30/08/2022 11:01

TheUsualChaos · 30/08/2022 00:41

Well tbf, they should be expensive. Eating fish as an cheap protein source is environmentally unsustainable.

This. Food prices have been held artificially low in this country for years. Time to pay the piper.

Damnautocorrect · 30/08/2022 11:02

Rosscameasdoody · 30/08/2022 09:21

A pack of dried works out cheaper than tinned - as with most pulses and if you have a pressure cooker or an instant pot/ninja type appliance you don’t need to soak them. Cook on high pressure for 18-20 minutes. If you soak for 8 hours, cook on high for 12-14 minutes and leave pressure to reduce naturally.

I’d be interested on the fuel comparison on that vs tinned. Especially smaller families.
i buy frozen mash as it is cheaper than me making it as we are a small family.

I do agree with that.

however part of that is because housing has taken up more and more of our budget.

  • Although everything else should have kept in line to enable people to continue to buy houses.

emotionsecho · 30/08/2022 10:27

Exactly. Meat, fish and dairy shouldn't be cheap.

I can eat little food because of gastro issue I rely on fish and dairy with high protein to stay well. I cannot be vegan I really hope they don't raise too much. Fish is cheaper in Europe which is a joke as we have some of the best seas!
I can get a big juicy meal of large swordfish fillets in Greece for 12 euros which two of us share it's £22 at home 😩

LetHimHaveIt · 30/08/2022 11:05

'The British Heart Foundation publishes portion size guides and actually states that 3 fish fingers (once a week) is an adult portion'

Seems unlikely, given that there are about 180 calories in three fish fingers. You'd have to be having quite a lot with them to make a meal clocking in at 500-600 calories.

Damnautocorrect · 30/08/2022 11:07

ive got an old 1940’s “how to run a house” book. It tells you how to budget
housing 18%
food, heating and lighting 33%

my rent is 75% of our household budget
