Pack of Birds Eye Fish Fingers £7.50 !! WTF?

planedelay · 30/08/2022 00:00

In Tesco today. Birds Eye normal code fish fingers. 30 pack, so the largest of the standard size packets but not a huge pack. And they were £7.50!! How much?! For bloody fish fingers!

I asked the lady on the check out till and she couldn't believe it either.

I expected them to be about £4. I bought Tesco own at £3.30.

AIBU to think that a what should be a cheap family staple should not be seven pounds bloody 50? And why?

What else is going to rocket in price?

I questioned the £9 steaks and was told that’s the price and did I want a manager etc
I feel bad for the shop staff because of this comment. Why would someone need to speak to a manager because a steak is a certain price? This suggests to me that they've had a lot of people kicking off because of high prices - shop staff have no say in the price of items.

I read that to mean the manager could be purchased instead of the steak. Not sure on the quality of the meat though and I would have to insist the manager was certified organic.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 30/08/2022 07:38

I want a fish finger sandwich now.

StrongTea · 30/08/2022 07:38

Bought mince in Sainsburys the other day and there was a security sticker on base of the pack.

Pinkkahori · 30/08/2022 07:40

14 Birds Eye Fish Fingers are €6.10 here in Ireland. They are Pollock, not cod.
I don't buy them so I looked it up as £7.50 didn't seem shocking to me for a box of 30 cod fish fingers.
Tesco didn't have boxes of 30. I imagine at that price no one would buy them in that size.

Tigerblue4 · 30/08/2022 07:42

Other fishfingers might not be cod, but many (who don't already) will be swapping to cheaper versions - they won't have a choice if they want a meal on the table.

RealBecca · 30/08/2022 07:45

Because of the war in Ukraine. Have a google, there are lots of articles on this. Russia owns 45% of whitefish supply.

RealBecca · 30/08/2022 07:47

@avamiah it's very considerate to post a trigger warning but not necessary. If people get offended by talking about meat they are being very silly and they give veggies and vegans a bad name x

Happydays321 · 30/08/2022 07:51

A pack of 30 birds eye pollock fish fingers, (with the same percentage of fish) is £4. More fool anyone paying full price.

LittleBearPad · 30/08/2022 07:57

The trigger warning was ridiculous! Steak’s expensive - this isn’t news.

WARNING
I apologise in advance to vegetarians and vegans as my post is going to be about Steaks and I do not wish to offend anybody so please do not continue to read on if you will be offended by me eating meat.

So I was in Asda last week and picked up 2 sirloin steaks individually packed and put them in my trolley.I didn’t even look at the price as I have bought the same steaks for the last 6 years but when I got to the check out and paid and checked my receipt as usual I was shocked to see the steaks were £9 each 😱

So yes of course I questioned the £9 steaks and was told that’s the price and did I want a manager etc, which I said No and to just remove them from my bill.

Who is going to pay £9 for 1 steak ??
Not Me .

I'm offended you feel the need to apologise for posting about meat on a thread about fish on an anonymous forum.

Whatever next!!

gogohmm · 30/08/2022 08:00

I'm sure they were £2 for 10 years ago. Didn't know they did large boxes

😂

I have been known to hate some bad managers I've had in my time but cannabilism would be a step too far

Did we just have a trigger warning for eating meat?

No. I’m vegetarian and understand that other people buy and eat meat, as do all vegetarian and vegans.

Oldrockingchair · 30/08/2022 06:20

I haven’t bought meat or fish for about 3 years - started doing it to save money & now I can’t eat it as makes me feel sick thinking about eating animals.

But I’m amazed so many people who are trying to cut back haven’t done this as the first thing to go - decent meat/fish has been expensive for a long time and isn’t remotely necessary so seems to me to be the first thing to go to save cash. plus no-one dies in the process - result!

@Oldrockingchair cutting back on meat/fish will be the last thing I do if I need to save money. Eat it less frequently or smaller portions maybe but only if I had to. The nutritional benefits are important to me and having a varied diet. I got a sirloin steak for £4 yesterday and I'm happy to pay that!

lll3333 · 30/08/2022 08:13

OP only a month or so ago, those same fish fingers were £4.50 a box and I put them down again in shock thinking wtf?...

toomuchlaundry · 30/08/2022 08:14

Are we not surrounded by white fish, why do we need to get it from Russia?

pottydimley · 30/08/2022 08:16

chillipenguin
I stopped buying avocados when all that drug cartel business came out

What drug cartel business?

CuriousMama · 30/08/2022 08:22

Avocado 🥑 and drugs? Wtaf?

I don't get the pretendy fish fingers. I imagine they're gross too.

HesterShaw1 · 30/08/2022 08:27

No we're not

Or at least, not the kind of white fish that idiot British consumers are prepared to eat

The sea is emptying of fish at a terrifying rate.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 30/08/2022 08:28

@BarbaraofSeville Tesco do their own brand cod fish fingers, but only in boxes of 10. Just checked the box I have in the freezer and they are 64% cod. Last time I bought a box they were £1.80 but might have gone up since. I can't see them on their online shopping site though.

LittleBearPad · 30/08/2022 08:28

Well we are in that Russia isn’t relevant though take your point about fish sticks overall

Grr fish stocks!

AustinsPowers · 30/08/2022 08:30

Food has been very cheap in the UK for years, proportionate to our income.
Fuel costs are impacting on all food.

The price you mention- that's for 30 fish fingers. That's 25p per fish finger. 75p per person for 3.

So less than £3 for a family of 4 eating 3 each.

CuriousMama · 30/08/2022 08:31

Just checked it's Mexican avocados that are linked to the cartel. We get ours in the UK from Spain etc. Sorry if you're in the USA though.

Fifife · 30/08/2022 08:32

We buy the Sainsbury's budget Stamford street fish fingers they cost 80p a pack for 10 and are cod fish fingers 🤣🤣.
