Should I pay?

I signed up to hellofresh free box when the codes were going about, forgot to cancel but I always keep my money in savings and transfer if needed anyways and they’ve sent me 2 boxes which I haven’t paid for and aren’t meals I’d eat and are now chasing payment for them. Has anyone else had this issue?

This thread is wild. It's manipulative because when you sign up they don't say 'fyi, we'll just send you random meals if you don't cancel'. They clearly do this to create this very situation. I'd just not pay. I don't think anything would happen. Though, you'd probably not be able to use Hello Fresh again.

You'd have thought she'd have done something about it after the first of her two 'surprise' boxes appeared after her free one though, wouldn't you?

GrumpyMummy123 · 27/08/2022 17:48

It's a subscription. That's how it works. You sign up and they take money by Direct debit and send you stuff (whether you select something or not).

Just because you didn't have enough money in your account for DD to be taken doesn't mean you don't need to pay! You admit you didn't cancel so it's your problem.

OP might not be able to use anything else either because it could affect her credit rating.

How is it bullshit? Tell me one person on this thread that hasn’t been through the same thing as hellofresh! In fact a couple people have already said they did.

What you're saying is ridiculous . Two or three times , I've agreed to a month's free trial of Amazon Prime but I know I'll have to cancel it before the month is up or I'll start being charged. It's obvious.

Right can no one see where I’m coming from? You pay for things before you buy them. You don’t order a Tesco shop, payment doesn’t go through and you still get it anyway. It seems a bit scammy they’re doing this to people who clearly signed up to a free trial and forgot to cancel

Lol how can you not see the irony in what you've said

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/08/2022 17:59

You are in a contract with them and need to pay.

Otherwise its stealing.

badbaduncle · 27/08/2022 18:05

there are a lot of reasons these contract types are unfair. They especially impact people with learning difficulties, dyslexia etc. It is all well and good sitting smugly telling people "it's obvious" "you signed up to it" etc but it isn't actually that easy for everyone. HF are deliberately doing this and it is very sharp practise.

limitededitionbarbie · 27/08/2022 18:07

Try ringing them op see if they will discount your box.

You select your meals… that is the whole point of subscription. Not understanding this is OP’s fault, not the company’s! Jesus, people need to just accept their mistakes as idiot tax and move on! If I forget to cancel a subscription (which I have done, I reckon we all have!) I cough up and then learn from it- set an alarm on my phone to cancel, write it on the calendar or whatever. Not the company’s responsibility to reimburse you because you didn’t bother reading the terms or can’t use simple reading comprehension (or even ask a friend how it works!)

They are called HelloFresh not WeArePsychicHelloFresh. You signed up to their deliveries, there wasn’t a box to tick saying I am only here for the special offer take me off your mailing list when I have had the free stuff, instead they probably had a page of terms and conditions ( did you read them?) which said very clearly what they would do if you didn’t choose further food options.

Blueink · 27/08/2022 18:18

No such thing as a free lunch. It’s possibly a bit dubious of you to use codes just for ‘freebies’ when you were not genuinely interested in the service, but that you didn’t cancel isn’t on the company.
You agreed the terms and conditions of a subscription, that doesn’t make it a scam. You had your 2 ‘free’ boxes and now you have 2 you are paying for. Tesco isn’t a subscription service is it, and neither do they provide you with ‘free’ bags of shopping.

MumE78 · 27/08/2022 18:25

If you don't choose meals they send you what they pick to cover the amount of meals you originally setup for the subscription.

You can cancel but in the meantime choose meals you like because they'll keep sending them

Yazmindahenn · 27/08/2022 18:32

You know its a subscription, it is made very extremely clear that it is a subscription when you took out the free trial.

It is up to you to cancel it, if you don't choose your meals they are automatically selected and sent out, as it is a subscription.

Speak to them on live chat, pay yhe box and they should refund about half the cost, but the full price is about £50, not £100 as you've said.

Once you have the refund then cancel the su scripting so it doesn't happen again.

Charlize43 · 27/08/2022 18:33

Of course you'll have to pay as you didn't cancel.

Loads of offers run like this where you get one month free and unless you cancel afterwards you have to pay X per month. You should have cancelled!

ApolloandDaphne · 27/08/2022 18:34

It isn't scammy at all. That is how subscriptions work. I always put a note in my diary to cancel a subscription before I need to pay.

Blueink · 27/08/2022 18:37

Forgot to say yes, I have forgotten to cancel subscriptions before, but never has it occurred to me to blame the company or try and get out of paying.

JinglingHellsBells · 27/08/2022 18:38

if you signed up for Amazon Prime free trial, as another example, they take payment in the subsequent months. You need to cancel to avoid the charge.

Same with the food box @Deliverooaddict

SuperCamp · 27/08/2022 18:44

OP: ALL free trials work like this. You sign up to the subscription, including agreeing to pay, you get your first however many free and then the payment kicks in. You AGREED TO IT when you signed up to the subscription and gave them your bank details. It was literally what you signed up to!

Scammy? No, read the deal. A marketing tactic that hooks people in exactly as you have been? Yes, exactly.

Murdoch1949 · 27/08/2022 18:47

I use the calendar on my phone with reminders for this sort of thing. I put the renewal date, a reminder a week before etc so nothing gets past me. If you take up offers like this you've got to be on it. But Hello Fresh also send you reminders about choosing your meals etc, so you've ignored them as well. Pay up. And why after the first unwanted box did you not cancel?

Matildahoney · 27/08/2022 18:50

You can bitch and moan as much as you like, it's in the small print. Usually they take the money before they send though.

Georgyporky · 27/08/2022 18:53

One unexpected box, & anyone with common sense would have cancelled or at least queried it.

2 boxes, well......

starfishmummy · 27/08/2022 18:59

Did you even read the terms and conditions when you signed up for the freebie??

No. I can't see where you are coming from because most subscription services don't work in that way. It is all in the terms and conditions.

You didn't cancel. That means they will choose the meals and ingredients for you and you will be obliged to pay. I used to use Hello Fresh and it was all there. Perfectly clear.

Your mistake.
