Should I pay?

I signed up to hellofresh free box when the codes were going about, forgot to cancel but I always keep my money in savings and transfer if needed anyways and they’ve sent me 2 boxes which I haven’t paid for and aren’t meals I’d eat and are now chasing payment for them. Has anyone else had this issue?

Don't understand why you are arguing that you are in the right! Read the contract! If you don't set an order they send you a default box. You didn't cancel so it's your fault, regardless of what you thought was going to happen. You need to pay up and learn from your mistake. For example, I just got a parking ticket because they changed the system in my town car park - I thought it was 3 free hours but it was 2. My fault - very annoying and I can ill afford it, but I paid up.

excitingusername · 27/08/2022 19:10

Hahah, your entitlement is ridiculous. You owe them money for goods, any intelligent person would understand this.

Libertyqueen · 27/08/2022 19:14

Deliverooaddict · 27/08/2022 14:35

Why would they send me it though? It’s not something I ordered is it, I didn’t choose those meals

I don’t think you understand the concept of a subscription. The model is that you get a box every week, you can select meal preferences online, but if you don’t they will just send you a random meal selection. All the meal subscriptions work like this and it’s all laid out on the website.
It’s annoying (I’ve done it too) but you do need to pay.

Ariela · 27/08/2022 19:17

It's akin to Amazon Prime. Last time I ordered from Amazon I HAD to sign up for Prime to get delivery.....if I didn't cancel they would assume I was a continuing service and charge my card accordingly.

LuftBalloons · 27/08/2022 19:21

Of course you have to pay. YABU to ask, let alone think of not paying.

Deliverooaddict · 27/08/2022 14:45

Right can no one see where I’m coming from? You pay for things before you buy them. You don’t order a Tesco shop, payment doesn’t go through and you still get it anyway. It seems a bit scammy they’re doing this to people who clearly signed up to a free trial and forgot to cancel

You really need to give your head a wobble and wake up to the normal world!

It’s a subscription.

Did you contact them to return the boxes they sent that you didn’t want?

what did you do with them?

Of course you need to pay.

You signed up to a trial subscription which stated that the subscription would continue until cancelled. Then you forgot to cancel it. That sucks, but it's your responsibility to manage these things, not the company selling you the product. The terms and conditions of the free trial are pretty clearly laid out, and it's not a scam.

Pay them what you owe, cancel the subscription and move on having learned from the experience.

badbaduncle · 27/08/2022 18:05

there are a lot of reasons these contract types are unfair. They especially impact people with learning difficulties, dyslexia etc. It is all well and good sitting smugly telling people "it's obvious" "you signed up to it" etc but it isn't actually that easy for everyone. HF are deliberately doing this and it is very sharp practise.

This is true.

Although OP should have cancelled, it's a sign of a low quality business model to build customer error or apathy to ensure revenue.

LightHouseParade · 27/08/2022 20:26

You just need to be organised and put things in your diary to cancel on time. I've made this mistake before but it's why they do the free trial so people will sign up to get something for free and forget about it. Sure it's annoying but it's clear that if you don't cancel you get charged. This isn't a new thing.

Nothing in life is free as they say. They're doing it to get your business after the trial stops.

SunnyD44 · 27/08/2022 20:38

The moral of the story - Don’t forgot to cancel your subscription.

I have been caught out with a couple things like Amazon prime and noom where it’s very cheap for the first 3 months and then it goes up so I end up paying full price for the extra month.

I now always put the date a couple of days before on my calendar so I don’t forget.

You we’re told it was only a trial that was free.
You were told to cancel.
If you forgot that’s your problem.

Brigante9 · 27/08/2022 20:38

Entirely your fault, tough, pay.

SeeYouNextTLol · 27/08/2022 20:45

👀

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 27/08/2022 20:45

Did you not read the terms and conditions?
It's like most subscriptions... you cancel or you keep paying.
It's not like ordering from Tesco's!

I'm going to be really honest here. There have been a huge number of threads lately whereby posters are literally light-benders.
This is one of them.

silverclock222 · 27/08/2022 21:12

OP : AIBU?
Everyone : Yes
OP : No I'm Not.

Loftyowl · 27/08/2022 21:14

I suppose it depends as to whether you think you should pay for a product or just get it completely free, because you couldn't be held accountable for cancelling or continuing to subscribe like an average responsible adult.Unless you have additional needs, this is on you.

FantasylandEnthusiast · 27/08/2022 21:19

You didn't read the terms which state it's a free trial and you can cancel up until a certain time, also states if you forget to choose the meals they will pick for you as it's a rolling subscription until cancelled.

A scam would be if they didn't mention this in their terms, which they do.

It is completely 💯 your fault for not reading before you signed up. No scam, yes you need to pay. I can't understand why you're so perplexed about what is clearly your mistake and yours alone. Read the terms, it's really not hard.

whynotwhatknot · 27/08/2022 21:20

think I'd have more sympathy if you had one box not two

girlmom21 · 27/08/2022 21:21

If you genuinely forgot to cancel why didn't you cancel when the second box arrived, as in the first not-free one?

Well your DH is 39, so it's not that big a leap to assume you're a similar age
