Should I pay?

I signed up to hellofresh free box when the codes were going about, forgot to cancel but I always keep my money in savings and transfer if needed anyways and they’ve sent me 2 boxes which I haven’t paid for and aren’t meals I’d eat and are now chasing payment for them. Has anyone else had this issue?

It's a subscription service, thats how it works.

Literally this. You use a code for a free box oe however it works then it’s on you to cancel the subscription if you don’t want anymore. You didn’t cancel so of course you have to pay. Not sure what’s so difficult about that?

It’s like when I enter my details for a free trial on an app or service. I cancel the subscription straight away because I only want the free trial, I don’t want to pay anything. If I forget to cancel and they charge me for the next month now that the free trial is up, that’s my own fault. It’s quite simple to understand

badbaduncle · 27/08/2022 15:28

It is scammy imo and it is why I wouldn't use them. You pay Gusto upfront and they cancel the box if not paid for 3/4 days in advance.

I had an incident with HF where I had to go away for an emergency. I was happy to pay for the box but needed it to be cancelled (they had 4 days notice) and they were incredibly rude and managed to offend me - which is pretty hard to do. They insisted on delivering the box to my rural address and leaving it at my property where a animals managed to break into it. We found a dead fox cub that had suffocated inside plastic packaging - it was horrific.

You will have to pay thou, or they will pursue you - that is their business model. Try Gusto next time.

Stripedbag101 · 27/08/2022 15:28

I’m a bit confused by your posts.

ypu signed up for a free box and I assume selected the type of meal box you wanted. You must have given your bank details at that point.

you didn’t cancel the subscription after the first charged box arrived and are only now complaint when the second box has arrived.

when I had a hello fresh subscription I was charged I think the day the box was delivered. Why are you only now getting the bill for the boxes and why hasn’t it come directly from your bank account?

Thehonestbadger · 27/08/2022 15:28

Right can no one see where I’m coming from? You pay for things before you buy them. You don’t order a Tesco shop, payment doesn’t go through and you still get it anyway. It seems a bit scammy they’re doing this to people who clearly signed up to a free trial and forgot to cancel

@Deliverooaddict

I can see the point you’re making but it’s a silly argument that doesn’t really get you anywhere. You’re comparing two very different services. By your logic perhaps Tesco should just start billing you a set monthly amount based on your usual usage then send you a proper bill at the end of the year… I mean that’s how most energy providers bill you isn’t it? Oh wait, no you don’t have that sort of payment agreement in place with Tesco do you so you wouldn’t expect them to do that?

You signed up; I know because I also had a food box service recently, to terms and conditions which lay out exactly that if you don’t cancel and don’t pick they will just send you a selection and you’ll pay for that. It’s your fault you didn’t cancel, it’s your fault you didn’t pick, from a legal liability standpoint you are 100% liable to pay for those boxes regardless of how much it costs.

Im tempted to play along and tell you to fight it though, because part of me thinks your shitty attitude deserves the bailiffs that will eventually end up at your door with a warrant to size 5x the value of the original bill. Might teach you how the world works xx

No. Let me explain:

Their business model is regular clients, they wouldn’t survive any other way. You can buy one offs if you want, but you didn’t, you signed up because you wanted the freebie.

The only way it’s worth then doing a freebie is to get regular clients out of it. Why would they give it to you otherwise??

The deal is, if you don’t want to go ahead, you have to cancel.

The fact you didn’t, is your fault for not putting a note putting in your diary.

You haven’t been scammed, you’ve been stupid.

And if you don’t pay you push prices up for other clients.

So you think its morally fine to.abuse the free trial box and get some free food but when they charge you for the goods after you forgot.to cancel (which takes a.few seconds) its them that are being "scammy" 😂 unbelievable. You fucked up here and legally you are contracted to pay them.

Quartz2208 · 27/08/2022 15:31

Legally yes you signed up for the free trial with terms and conditions in place and this is the end result

there are different business models this is different to Disney+ and tescos so you can’t compare

there is no recourse but to ring them and see if they will reduce but ultimately your are responsible for paying

YellowTreeHouse · 27/08/2022 15:32

YABVU. You don’t get a choice in the matter - you will pay.

Next time be more aware of what you have signed up to and when and stop trying to blame everyone else for your incompetence.

Confusion101 · 27/08/2022 15:34

You are in the wrong. Cancel the subscription, pay what you owe, stop complaining! And the fact you thought it necessary to make a thread on this.... 😂

It's not scammy.

It's a subscription service which you agreed to by signing up for the free box and then not cancelling.

I'm assuming you can read. There will have been terms and conditions attached to the free trial.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 27/08/2022 15:35

Just accept the fact that this is your fault for not cancelling and pay up. Take some responsibility.

Or don't pay and end up with a CCJ.

MumofSpud · 27/08/2022 15:35

Have you cancelled your subscription yet?

Glitterbomber · 27/08/2022 15:35

I’m going through similar with hello fresh at the moment except I did cancel!

I cancelled but for some reason they sent me a box. A box I’d like to add that contained 5 meals with chicken and there wasn’t one bit of chicken! Also, each meal had other bits missing so there was no way I could use it - and in fact, I wouldn’t have anyhow as I’d just done a grocery shop!

I rang hello fresh immediately and told them this was an error, I hadn’t paid and could they please come back to collect. The customer advisor told me that it was ‘complimentary’ and there would be no charge. I was still slightly miffed with random bits of food and no meals to be made from anything that was in the box, also I had no need for it. However no real harm done….

Except the cheeky big hats are chasing me daily for payment!!!!! Which I will absolutely not be doing. How dare they 😡

It is morally fine to have the free boxes then cancel. The issue is that she forgot to cancel and ended up with the worst of both worlds - food she did not choose so doesn't eat and having to pay for it.
How is using the free trial abuse? It is a trial, you have no obligations whatsoever and cancelling is fine.

Deliverooaddict · 27/08/2022 14:47

@FleursSechees right and if I don’t pay my Disney+ subscription they stop me using it. They don’t give me 2 months usage extra then demand me to pay it after

No, but if you signed up for a free trial and didn't cancel it for two months, they would charge you for it, regardless of whether you ever opened the app or not. Which is the exact same situation here.

Presumably they have been trying to take a direct debit and it's not going through. So they are asking why. They have been trying to charge you upfront and can't so now you need to rectify it.

badbaduncle · 27/08/2022 15:39

Trustpilot is full of complaints like @Glitterbomber 's
Sharp practise and bad customer service are the main complaints.

inaminute23 · 27/08/2022 15:40

I think if you don't choose which specific meals you'd like, they select for you!

You should pay because you didn't cancel.

prh47bridge · 27/08/2022 15:40

Presumably they have tried to collect payment from your credit/debit card but have been unable to do so. Their terms and conditions are clear that, in this situation, they may still send the food and you will be liable for the price. That is not an unfair contract term in my view. If you refuse to pay, I would expect them to take you to court and win. Why should they end up out of pocket because you didn't cancel your subscription? And no, I don't think it is scammy. It is something many businesses do.

Why doesn't anyone take responsibility for themselves any more? Presumably you can read? It's very obvious that they pre-select meals for you, if you don't choose any yourself. You have the App, and it clearly shows you what is coming and when. You will eat the food. Pay it and lesson learned.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 27/08/2022 15:43

But you gave them permission to do this. You signed up and ticked a box that told you this is how it works. It's a subscription service where you pay for food delivered to your door. Food was delivered so you pay, and learn to set an alarm cancelling in future!
