Should I pay?

I signed up to hellofresh free box when the codes were going about, forgot to cancel but I always keep my money in savings and transfer if needed anyways and they’ve sent me 2 boxes which I haven’t paid for and aren’t meals I’d eat and are now chasing payment for them. Has anyone else had this issue?

OP posts:
Blossomtoes · 27/08/2022 15:46

Haven’t RTFT, has anyone said she shouldn’t pay yet?

Somethingneedstochange · 27/08/2022 15:46

If you don't choose the meals you want by a certain date they choose for you. Out of the meal groups you selected. I got a couple I wouldn't have ordered myself. Mainly because they were high calorie not because I'm fussy. But cooked them anyway and actually enjoyed them. Plus they're he healthier than a takeaway.

Skodacool · 27/08/2022 15:47

Deliverooaddict · 27/08/2022 14:35

Why would they send me it though? It’s not something I ordered is it, I didn’t choose those meals

They make it clear that if you don’t choose they will choose for you. You have to be proactive and cancel. Learn.

Libre55 · 27/08/2022 15:48

Does anyone remember those ads in the 80’s where you would pick 5 cd’s each costing 10p. If you forgot to cancel, they would send you a random CD every month and charge you OOT for it? I ended up with a couple of questionable CD’s before I stopped it. James Galway plays the Carpenters anyone? I had a friend who just ignored the invoices and ended up with a CCJ. You have screwed up, we all do. Just pay it and learn a lesson.

Sooveritallnow · 27/08/2022 15:49

I've used Hello Fresh on multiple occasions and OP you ate in the wrong. I hope they set the debt collectors on you.

They make it very clear when you sign up it is a subscription service
They make it very clear how frequently and how many meals you will receive They make it very clear when you have to preselect your meal choices by to avoid receiving the default options.
The make it very clear by what date tou have to pause your subscription by to avoid an unwanted delivery being sent
They make it very easy for you to skip weeks
They make it incredibly easy to cancel at anytime.

You ate not getting any sympathy on this thread OP as you are so far past being unreasonable you are in CF territory.

Pay your bills and follow the correct process to cancel your subscription before any further boxes arrive or you get a debt collectors letter with addironal charges and then a CCJ for not paying what are contractually obligated to pay for.

Skodacool · 27/08/2022 15:49

prh47bridge · 27/08/2022 15:40

Presumably they have tried to collect payment from your credit/debit card but have been unable to do so. Their terms and conditions are clear that, in this situation, they may still send the food and you will be liable for the price. That is not an unfair contract term in my view. If you refuse to pay, I would expect them to take you to court and win. Why should they end up out of pocket because you didn't cancel your subscription? And no, I don't think it is scammy. It is something many businesses do.

This.

@FleursSechees right and if I don’t pay my Disney+ subscription they stop me using it. They don’t give me 2 months usage extra then demand me to pay it after

The equivalent to the likes of Disney+ is you get 30 days free and if you don’t cancel you get automatically signed up to a 1 year contract.

HerRoyalNotness · 27/08/2022 15:52

This just reminded me to cancel my sub. I’ve been skipping it for months and then got an email to say my delivery would be delayed. No email to remind to pick meals etc. Just that it was on the way. My fault entirely.

when you get the free box you sign up for a sub, if you don’t skip or cancel they send a weekly box, it’s the model!

weirdly I also didn’t see a credit card charge notification for it. I’ve cancelled, had to Google the login as it’s not on their front page that just wants you to sign up, had have cancelled. Did it on laptop as can’t ever seem to find that on the app.

ThisisCollie2022 · 27/08/2022 15:54

This is so funny its going to end up in the Daily Mail

Tubs11 · 27/08/2022 15:54

OP, by any chance are you having an endoscopy today?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/08/2022 15:58

Don’t sign up to things you clearly don’t understand OP

NumberTheory · 27/08/2022 16:03

I agree that it shouldn’t be legal, OP. The model could easily be tweaked to ensure each box is actually wanted, or at least give people the option of having to be reminded each time, but they make more money by taking advantage of people.

However, it does seem to be legal, so unless you are up for a legal battle with them to try and set a precedent for all of us (which would be expensive and you quite likely wouldn’t win), you should pay up. Not paying up will have a negative impact on your credit rating and could lead to CCJ against you for the amount plus fees and interest.

BlueReindeer · 27/08/2022 16:04

You agreed to keep ordering a weekly box after the free trial.
you got sent meals you didn’t choose because there are a default 4 meals say and you ah e to log in the week before to change them to what you want.
Companoes don’t give you a free trial box for free for something this expensive. Surely after the first box arrived you weren’t expecting you should have cancelled it!!

Christonabike37 · 27/08/2022 16:06

You signed up to a subscription. You didn't cancel it so you pay. You have to change your recipes or they select ones for you. Some people* *just let random ones arrive every week.

McConkeysPlate · 27/08/2022 16:08

Just go on the app and cancel it. It’s simple.
The menus are pre selected so unless you choose different meals you get them!

TabithaTittlemouse · 27/08/2022 16:08

Right can no one see where I’m coming from? You pay for things before you buy them. You don’t order a Tesco shop, payment doesn’t go through and you still get it anyway. It seems a bit scammy they’re doing this to people who clearly signed up to a free trial and forgot to cancel

I completely understand it’s really annoying but you did agree to the terms. I’m always super scared to try things like this as I think this is how they get you. It’s annoying as hell but I think you have to pay unfortunately. There’s a clothes one that’s similar that I can’t bring myself to use either as I’m worried I would forget to cancel.

Pixiedust1234 · 27/08/2022 16:16

This is how free trials and subscriptions work. If you don't want the service its down to you to cancel it.

Pay up, otherwise you are a thief. Think about that.

Good spot!

I questioned her on that one tbh!

dianthus101 · 27/08/2022 16:28

Surely you have paid? They will have used your debit card so you are probably overdrawn now.

Marotte · 27/08/2022 16:29

I'm not going to even answer the original AIBU as Mumsnet has spoken definitively on that. What concerns me more is that we've got someone on the thread who has refused to say what they did with £100 of food, so are we supposed to assume that as well as not wanting to pay for it, the OP has also wasted it?

Even if it would be more like £50 at the supermarket, that is still a lot of food, and there is no reason for it to be completely inedible to her, because it should be aligned to what the OP chose for their options in the beginning? e.g. there shouldn't be meat if she's vegetarian. You can get rid of excess food via various Apps, your street's Facebook, talking to your neighbours, etc. Bit 🤔about the person who said they couldn't find any way at all to use up the non-chicken ingredients that had been misdelivered, too. Although agree that HF sound as though they have some serious issues from time to time which is putting me off them (that and the cost and the fact that I know how to cook from scratch with whatever is on offer/in the fridge... I'll get my coat).

It’s annoying as hell but I think you have to pay unfortunately. There’s a clothes one that’s similar that I can’t bring myself to use either as I’m worried I would forget to cancel.

Of course it’s how they get you. Anyone who offers a free trial which keeps charging UNLESS you specifically cancel is making an absolute shit ton of money from people forgetting to cancel. It’s the only reason they offer free trials. It is NOT because the free trials are just so amazing that they think everyone who tries it will want their product. But for maybe a 10 quid investment in their part, OP now owes them £100 and yes, according to the terms and conditions she signed, she very much does owe the £100. And think how much money that is. If 20,000 people try Hello Fresh because they saw an advert. Hello Fresh know only a small percentage will actually sign up AFTER the free trial, maybe a thousand. But if over half those 20,000 people forget to cancel and owe £100… that’s fucking £1 million! (10,000 x £100). From people forgetting to cancel! No wonder they advertise everywhere and no wonder they offer you free trials and no wonder they don’t remind you to cancel! This is how almost all free trials work (there are a very few that say they won’t charge at the end OR ones that don’t take any bank or credit info) - “Enjoy your free trial! And if you don’t cancel by the end, we’ll start charging you immediately.” And like I said, you won’t have a leg to stand in re: not paying it. Yes, it is scammy, but everyone has ALWAYS known there are no free lunches, and this is the LITERAL definition of no free lunch, except I guess it’s no free supper, since you use Hello Fresh for supper. If you sign up for a free trial, press cancel IMMEDIATELY, so that it will stop as soon as the free trial is over and you don’t have to remember to do it in seven days or a month or whatever.

If you are subscribed to a regular box and don’t choose your meals they choose for you.

This is all clearly explained when you sign up. It’s a subscription service - don’t cancel and you are liable. Obviously.

Your forgetfulness is not their concern.

Maybe stick to Tesco.
