Should I pay?

I signed up to hellofresh free box when the codes were going about, forgot to cancel but I always keep my money in savings and transfer if needed anyways and they’ve sent me 2 boxes which I haven’t paid for and aren’t meals I’d eat and are now chasing payment for them. Has anyone else had this issue?

I’m always super scared to try things like this as I think this is how they get you. It’s annoying as hell...

How many people can there be on one thread that can't run their lives, use a calendar, and don't understand how legitimate business works? They don't "get you", you sign up of your own volition. Or, not. The only problem is if they then have poor customer service and/or don't fulfill their side of the contract.

Marotte · 27/08/2022 16:35

Yes, it is scammy

It's not. Saying it is is unfair on the subscription-style businesses and also on people who have really been scammed.

I agree. If anything OP is doing the scamming here.

Lovemusic33 · 27/08/2022 16:39

I had issues with Gousto, after cancelling my subscription online they sent me out a random box and charged me for it, it took me ages to try and get my money back as apparently I didn’t cancel my subscription properly even though I had proof of cancellation. In your case though, you haven’t cancelled at all so technically you need to pay. I wouldn’t sign up to anything like this again, they are hard to cancel and bloody expensive.

bruffin · 27/08/2022 16:39

its only a scam if they make it really difficult /impossible to cancel

Yeah I remember when this sort of thing first launched and there were companies where to cancel you had to click on a tiny link somewhere and spend ages trying to do it

Deliverooaddict · 27/08/2022 16:43

How is it bullshit? Tell me one person on this thread that hasn’t been through the same thing as hellofresh! In fact a couple people have already said they did.

PonyPatter44 · 27/08/2022 16:47

The only bullshit is apparently competent adults signing up to these silly boxes, when they could just go and buy a couple of decent cookbooks and think for themselves! Look, you messed up, be an adult about it and take responsibility for you own cock-up.

Asperia · 27/08/2022 16:49

You wanted to 'take advantage' by using a free offer though you never intended to pay for non free ones. You then forgot to cancel so in marketing terms they 'got their own back'. Entirely usual and clear to read in the T&Cs. Pay up and next time, remember to cancel or don't order the 'free' stuff!

Viviennemary · 27/08/2022 16:56

These schemes are very irritating. There was a bookclub once operating in a similar way. If you didnt choose a book you got sent a random one. I sypathise. But thats what you signed up for.

Tubs11 · 27/08/2022 15:54

OP, by any chance are you having an endoscopy today?

Lol! I saw that thread earlier

hookiewookie29 · 27/08/2022 17:00

Yes I'm sure it's in their T&Cs. Happened to us, forgot to order, forgot to cancel so they sent a box based on what we'd had before and took the money off my card

FlissyPaps · 27/08/2022 17:05

How old are you OP?

Did you read the full terms and conditions before signing up for a free trial? Every company is different but it’s pretty common knowledge after the free trial you get charged for the subscription service. It’s not rocket science.

You’re not going to get very far arguing with strangers on Mumsnet. You’re better off contacting their customer service. (Although they’ll tell you the same thing we are!)

OP is in her 30s, married with a drink driving husband about to lose his licence, a baby yo said husband and apparently has 10 siblings.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 27/08/2022 17:21

At least your partner won’t need to drunk drive to pick up your tea op 🙄

Yep just awaiting the deletion message. Thank fuck the kids go back to school soon

dampgreg · 27/08/2022 17:25

Same thing happened to me with Gousto, but I paid it because it was my fault.

Tell you one person on the thread who hasn't been through the same thing with hello fresh?

Um, how about everyone apart from those who have been through the same thing with hello fresh?

Why didn't you cancel after the first box that came 'unexpectedly' after your free trial OP?

The majority of people. Because we actually know how to cancel our free trials.

limitededitionbarbie · 27/08/2022 17:37

I forgot to cancel and they sent me a full
Price box of stuff I wouldn't have ordered.

I called them and cancelled and the lady I spoke to was very kind and put a 50% or 40% discount on the box I'd received.

I paid it was my fault for not cancelling.

It will be in the terms and conditions that if you don't pick they will pick for you unless cancelled.

Brokendaughter · 27/08/2022 17:39

Yes, you should pay.

You signed up & if you didn't read the terms & conditions, that is on you.

When the first one turned up, you didn't go & do anything about it, you just left it, so you could have sorted this earlier but didn't bother.

Your fault, your bill.

NumptiesIncorporated · 27/08/2022 17:43

You didn't cancel. I've had a similar issue with a newspaper subscription.

Guess what?

I paid. And cancelled.

I hadn't even read the bloody thing. At least you got the food delivered!

Beansí · 27/08/2022 17:44

Of course you should pay. You forgot to cancel.

Giraffapuses · 27/08/2022 17:44

This thread is wild. It's manipulative because when you sign up they don't say 'fyi, we'll just send you random meals if you don't cancel'. They clearly do this to create this very situation. I'd just not pay. I don't think anything would happen. Though, you'd probably not be able to use Hello Fresh again.

rnsaslkih · 27/08/2022 17:45

It not like ordering from the supermarket. HF is a subscription. So if you don't choose the meals (and additionally don't pause the subscription = skip a box which you can do in the app), then they will auto choose meals for you and they will just arrive. They will autochoose the number of meals that you stated when you signed up.

Thing is I can see it both ways. It is annoying if you only wanted the free food, but from HF point of view, how would they possibly make money if people only got free food? Unfortunately it is on you to cancel the subscription or at least skip the boxes for the coming weeks.

If they have sent you 2 boxes, then I imagine more will come until you put a stop to it. And yes you do have to pay because when you signed up, you will have agreed to pay - it will have been in the small print.
