To think Lineker should apologise for his tweet

The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

He’s well known as a creep isn’t he? If you ever read a “celebrities I’ve met” thread on mn he always gets mentioned as a letch. That’s a no thank you from me Gary!

friendlycat · 01/08/2022 00:00

Can’t see anything wrong with it. She did whip off her shirt exposing her sports bra and was given a yellow card for doing so.

Mississipi71 · 01/08/2022 00:01

Not again. Get over it. Why on earth is there any need to take it seriously.

WeAreAllLionesses · 01/08/2022 00:06

They've done brilliantly - nothing else matters!

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 00:08

She ran about in her bra, the tweet mentioned the word bra. It was a completely relevant jokey comment.

There is absolutely nothing sexist or embarrassing at all.

Margot78 · 01/08/2022 00:09

It’s casual sexism from someone who is supposed to be a respected player and pundit. He should have just taken the opportunity to say well done and not made it all about her underwear. Do we really have to keep dismissing this stuff?

Nothing wrong with the tweet, completely in context with what happened .

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/08/2022 00:09

I thought it was quite funny. But I took it in the way of he was celebrating her celebration, if that makes sense.

She made it about her underwear 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mississipi71 · 01/08/2022 00:13

Do we have to keep looking for offence where there is none? I don't care if men want to take us backwards but when women start doing it, that's what I really call embarrassing. Take a leaf out of the team's book and take positive action, instead of complaining and acting the victim.

Do we really have to keep dismissing this stuff?

Do we really have to pretend someone is being sexist when in context they're not?

There's enough real sexism in the world to tackle, without picking up on someone making a pun about a bra when a footballer was running around in her bra.

And for full disclosure I can't stand Gary Lineker.

Mayorquimby2 · 01/08/2022 00:16

"and is also concerned that the thread has gone in a different way to how she'd envisaged"

Before we all dedicate ourselves to this debate just for @mnhq to inevitably pull it

Thedogscollar · 01/08/2022 00:16

I see it as simply a play on words nothing more nothing less.
Be offended if you want but I can't see the lionesses being upset by that comment.

friendlycat · 01/08/2022 00:19

It’s not casual sexism. She took her top off and ran about in her sports bra. It doesn’t matter, but she was yellow carded as not allowed.

If a male footballer takes his shirt off and spins it around his head the same yellow card applies. Nothing sexist here. Yes he referenced her bra but it was on full display, displayed by her. I thought in context it was quite witty.

I get so fed up with people referencing sexism when it’s just not there. A woman football player scores a goal. Takes off her top (not allowed under the rules of the game) swirls her top around displaying her sports bra (not at all necessary in terms of goal celebration at all) and you are complaining about a tweet that references this 😆

Tsandjdarethrbest · 01/08/2022 00:19

Saying the word bra isn’t sexist.

Saying the word bra isn’t sexist.

It soon will be, if some have their way. A female team has achieved something monumental and this is what comes out of it. I am struggling to understand in what way his comment was sexist. Unoriginal but sexist, no.

Topseyt123 · 01/08/2022 00:24

There's nothing to be offended about. Don't be ridiculous. She did strip down to her bra. It was high jinx. She was also yellow carded for it, though I don't see why personally.

No need to look for offence to take.

Exactly. I really don't see any big deal here.

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 01/08/2022 00:25

I thought it was a mildly amusing play on words that was set in the context of the image it was shared alongside.

However I’ve been involved in a row with a sexist tosspot who moderates a FB group I’m in who shared the same image with the words, ‘nice to see the girls turning the final into a semi’.

Now that is sexist 😐

LampLighter414 · 01/08/2022 00:25

Mumsnet grow up

FrippEnos · 01/08/2022 00:29

Its a very bad pun.

Yes he is an arse, but its a poor joke.

HalfBrick · 01/08/2022 00:32

It's a play on words, that's all. There's the Kelly's Heroes play on words too. The whole thing is a non sexist quip.

Yes, I have been a moderator on football banter pages and the only woman. That and being the only female lecturer in an FE sports dept, tells me some just dont understand what represents sexism. I am out of this one..

girlfrien · 01/08/2022 00:33

Don't get your sports bra in a twist.
