To think Lineker should apologise for his tweet

The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

Maybe she shouldn't have taken her top off?

Surplus2requirements · 01/08/2022 07:04

I thought it was a powerful moment of celebration, look at me, I can do what men do, I'm bloody good at it and I've got nothing to be ashamed of.

Lineker made a fairly weak pun out of a highly unusual event in a way that doesn't sexualise or objectify Kelly in any way.

I actually think this (2nd thread) to shame Lineker is an attempt to shame Kelly

Weirdwonders · 01/08/2022 07:13

The papers would make a pun if anything noteworthy happened in the men’s game and this is no exception. YABU.

TowelChair · 01/08/2022 07:16

It’s a play on words. She’s stripped off her top and ran around wearing a sports bra. Doubt she’d be complaining about his tweet.

Stop being offended on the part of someone else.

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 07:17

Do the blokes get yellow carded if they take off their shirt?

Why not?

Do the blokes get yellow carded if they take off their shirt?

Yes.

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 07:19

Twonewcats · 01/08/2022 00:55

Because you're not meant to take your top off or even pull up the front and put it over your head. The men get a yellow card for it too

Ah ok the men get told off for it too. Why is this? I'm sure they all used to do it in the olden days

Simonjt · 01/08/2022 07:19

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 07:18

Why not?

Maybe because it is an instant yellow card so she was (stupidly) risking her time on the pitch.

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 07:19

Simonjt · 01/08/2022 07:19

Yes.

Thanks, why? Is it like a sponsor ship thing?

JasmineVioletRose · 01/08/2022 07:20

Nightlystroll · 01/08/2022 01:19

If anyone else had said it, I wouldn't care. But he's a vile pig so I'm happy for him to be condemned for breathing never mind saying something.

Why do you think he's so terrible?

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 07:17

Do the blokes get yellow carded if they take off their shirt?

Yes they do.

The women commentators on the match also made the same joke.

Its a sign of disrespect to the other team, it is also typically done in front of the opposition fans to wind them up

Roselilly36 · 01/08/2022 07:25

I am not a Lineker fan, tweet is funny, it must be a hard life for people that seem to be offended by anything and everything.

girlmom21 · 01/08/2022 07:26

Imagine pretending to be a feminist and claiming the word bra is sexist Grin

Oh right fair enough thanks for explaining. I'm not au fait with the rules of football shirts etc.

As for Lineker's tweet. It gets exhausting having everyone apologise for everything all the time and this one was a little ill advised but there have been loads of disgusting comments on twitter about the team and I feel these should be the main focus of my ire.

honkeytonkwoman38 · 01/08/2022 07:30

It was an appropriate tweet given she took her top off. It was a celebratory action on her part. Nothing sexual about it and nothing particularly sexual about his tweet either. Chill!

loislovesstewie · 01/08/2022 07:31

It's been a yellow card offence since 2004; because it's done to wind up opposition fans , quite often the goalscorer runs to that end of the pitch to 'celebrate', they often wear a vest that has a political message on it which is frowned on, and it's often seen as time-wasting so that the match doesn't restart as quickly as it should. There have been loads of times when male players have committed all of those offences and have been yellow carded; it's unsportsman like behaviour. No, she should not have taken her shirt off, and Lineker wasn't being sexist.

notacooldad · 01/08/2022 07:31

Yes he is an arse, but its a poor joke.
I thought it was a quite a good joke. He is an arse though!

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 07:17

Do the blokes get yellow carded if they take off their shirt?

Yes they do. But there would never be any jokes made about it or probably any mention of it. I’ve never seen anyone comment on seeing a male player’s nipples. A bra seems to be more noteworthy though, strangely.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/08/2022 07:35

I agree with you OP. If a male player had done this, it would never be mentioned by anyone. There would be no “quip”.

Well maybe thats because vest or t-shirt with a message written on it doesn't lend itself to the same play on words. But a male taking off his top does get mentioned.

LivingOnAnIsland · 01/08/2022 07:37

It was a joke. She took her top off and ran around the pitch showing her bra. It's not particularly funny, but it's not sexist. When Rebekah Vardy lost her court case, he said something about an own goal. Also not particularly funny.

drpet49 · 01/08/2022 07:37

Get a life OP, it is a take on the saying bar none. Bra none.

Aishah231 · 01/08/2022 07:42

It's just a mildly funny pun. The fact he's tweeting about the women's game is a good thing.

SpidersAreShitheads · 01/08/2022 07:46

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 01/08/2022 06:52

I agree with you OP. If a male player had done this, it would never be mentioned by anyone. There would be no “quip”. It devalues her moment to being about her underwear. I think it’s sexism.

Are you seriously suggesting that a female player who takes her top off and runs around in a bra (which I have no problems with btw) is the same as a male player going shirt-less? Female breasts are heavily sexualised in every aspect of our culture, and the male chest isn't. Men can go shirtless without breaking obscenity laws, women can't. It's not a like for like comparison.

A women running around in a bra is more akin to a male player whipping off his shorts, and running around in his pants. Neither are obscene, both cover everything decently - but both would be a highly unusual thing to do on the pitch.

And as a football fan I absolutely guarantee that if a male player ran around the pitch in his pants, showing underwear in the same way, there would be an absolute DELUGE of comments - including many from his fellow professionals who would delight in ripping the piss out of him mercilessly.

Your suggestion that male players don't face "quips" is so far short of the mark. Football is full of puns, ribbing etc - women don't get a free pass, and it would be insulting if they did.
