To think Lineker should apologise for his tweet

The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

Yes they do. But there would never be any jokes made about it or probably any mention of it. I’ve never seen anyone comment on seeing a male player’s nipples. A bra seems to be more noteworthy though, strangely.

Or it was an easy pun and harder to think of one for men showing their nipples. Maybe MN could run a competition to see if anyone can come up with one.

pinkleopards · 01/08/2022 08:18

I think the point of the tweet has been spectacularly missed. To be, Gary was applauding the fact the player felt comfortable enough to take her top off and swing it around in celebration. Just as the men do.

Margot78 · 01/08/2022 08:19

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 02:23

Tasteless and unnecessary.

It’s school boy sexism “a bra! a bra! look she was wearing a bra cos she has boobies” snigger snigger.

And if you’re under any illusion this wasn’t problematic just look at all the creepy fuckers he emboldened to talk about the womens’ bodies and dehumanise them with grim sexual and masturbatory references.

Thank you, I was beginning to feel like a bit of a lone voice! 😂 I guess I just wish he could have just congratulated them without a tit joke. It just feels like it reduces it somehow and his tweet did invite some vulgar appreciation from men that I hope none of the lionesses read. Obviously I’m in the minority and that’s ok but I do think it’s important to question these things and not get too complacent about casual sexism. I’m
happy to get told it’s an over reaction as long as we don’t stop having these types of discussion. I do think they are actually important.

Double standards I know but if say, nigelfarage or Boris Johnson had tweete it I’d have been more annoyed. But Gary has been super supportive….

MintyDogBreath · 01/08/2022 08:16

I used to fit bras and I am very concerned that she’s not wearing a well fitting, supportive one.

It was a sports bra, how was it not well supportive?

Gary Linekar hasn't done anything wrong, it was a play on words.

OddSocksandRainbowDocs · 01/08/2022 08:21

I find it embarrasing that some people feel that Lineaker should apologise! Lots of people found it funny. It's called having a sense of humour.

Kelly scored a goal. Kelly ran around with her bra on show. Lineaker made a joke about that. 🙂

toomuchlaundry · 01/08/2022 08:25

Then complain about the idiots who made the sexist comments after his tweet @Margot78. His tweet was a play on words not talking about her body.

hattie43 · 01/08/2022 08:26

I think it's quite funny 😄

Oblomov22 · 01/08/2022 08:27

He's known as a leach. But she chose to celebrate in that way: to take her shirt off, run around in her sports bra, for which she gets yellow carded.

andyindurham · 01/08/2022 08:27

Is this the same Gary Lineker who presented an episode of MotD in his undies after pledging to do so if Leicester City (his first club) won the league?

Women taking their shirts off in celebration - look up Brandi Chastaine, team USA, at World Cup (I think) in about 1999. Iconic image in the history of women's football.

Nobody paying attention to men when they do it. Italian forward Fabrizio Ravanelli used to pull his shirt over his head after scoring. When he joined Middlesbrough, their fans started adapting the Macarena to sing 'he scores a goal and he shows you his belly, whoooah Ravanelli'. That must have been mid-90s. Of course, back then it was an original and unusual celebration. The novelty has somewhat worn off over the course of 25 years.

Basically, Lineker's tweet is absolutely in context for football humour. I'm not saying it's Wildean in its rapier-like subtlety, but if we want women's football to be treated like men's, this is part of it. Or, since footie humour is pretty dreary most of the time, it is possible to just watch the game and not plough through social media reading responses from millions of people you don't know. It won't change the result, and there's rarely much by way of insight there.

girlmom21 · 01/08/2022 08:29

It was a sports bra, how was it not well supportive?

Have you seen it? It was a really poor quality sports bra

Quia · 01/08/2022 08:36

There is absolutely nothing sexist about that tweet, therefore nothing to apologise for.

Meltinthemiddle · 01/08/2022 08:38

I thought it was quite funny but then I have a sense of humour and don't take things so seriously 😬

tttigress · 01/08/2022 08:39

Lineker seems quite creepy to me.

He has been hosting football on the BBC basically forever, time for someone else?

toomuchlaundry · 01/08/2022 08:43

If she hadn’t taken her shirt off and he had mentioned her bra or her boobs in his tweet, then I would get the outrage. But she showed the world her bra and he used the word in a play on words (didn’t make salacious comments about her bra or boobs), so really can’t see the problem.

Meh! Bra-vo to her!
More offended by the male members of our work whatsapp group posting kitchen sink memes all night, but even then, meh!!

Jesus. Do you not have an HR dept?*

Relax. If you were on our work WhatsApp group you'd know it's just banter. Retorts were on the lines of "having to send the women to do the job properly".

PugInTheHouse · 01/08/2022 08:44

And this is one of the reasons why sexism isn't always taken seriously as you always get those people who make out there are sexism issues when there aren't FFS. I have this conversation with my teen boys regularly as because of these sorts of accusation sexism ends up being minimised.

Being offended by a pun which IMO is totally reasonable given the fact she took her shirt off showing her bra is just ridiculous, it would have been offensive if he referred to her bra randomly.

HRTQueen · 01/08/2022 08:47

Yes first thing on our dept MS Teams group this morning was a man congratulating the women's team and our boss (female) commenting 'if you want a job doing properly get women to do it' everyone incl the men laughed. It's a joke and she absolutely does not mean that but because we're all grown ups we're not offended and took it in the way it was intended.

She took her top off and showed her sports bra when she scored. It was a pun based on this. He likes his puns, it really isn't sexist in this context. Yabu.

Yes.

I'm more disgusted at the fact that he bloody cheated on the underwear thing when Leicester won - did ONE link on MOTD wearing shorts... not the same thing!

Tulipomania · 01/08/2022 08:59

I don't think it's sexist. She chose to run around in her bra. She may come to regret that as that image may come to define her for decades, but it's her choice.

It was a witty pun, I'm usually the first to get offended by sexism but this doesn't qualify for me.
