The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

Well, this is an interesting conundrum.
You see sneering where I don’t but you expect me to take your word and respect your feelings on it.
I see sexism where you don’t but you think I should shut up because I’m wrong.

Please point out where I said you should shut up.

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 15:57

As an aside, the sneery "im sooo superior and this is the only way to think" posters are why I hid all the FWR topics and generally avoid posting on anything like this. I'm not alone either

which is why I'm hiding this.

And even when you acknowledge you don't really understand the issues and ask a question, you still get sneered at.

Floisme · 01/08/2022 16:03

I don't think opinions on this thread are split on straight FWR/non FWR lines

"internalised misogyny" is exactly the sort of phrase that makes me despair of anyone on MN calling themselves a "feminist".

"You disagreed with because you have IM!"

FFS. Talk about how to lose friends & influence over people.

Yes, I refuse to engage any further with that poster and her strange notions.

Strange notions that you shouldn’t tell women to shut up and stop letting the side down? Hmmmm

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 01/08/2022 16:20

When specifically talking about sexism*

Oblomov22 · 01/08/2022 21:01

When it's all over my Facebook, all over the papers, and nearly everybody is saying that they can't understand why the snowflakes are offended.

NelStevHan · 01/08/2022 21:06

There’s a reason he wasn’t on the coverage. He took down the tweet, that should be enough.
The seemingly endless sexist drivel from many men on the subject of women’s footie is thankfully and finally being drowned out by the positive voices of women and girls who actually play the game.
he’s just another dinosaur, becoming more and more irrelevant.

CatsandFish · 01/08/2022 22:02

From what I've seen about women commenting on twitter, Lineker is a known sexist pig. He even wrote a tweet about how 'simple' the game was, after the women won. A quite pointed remark suggesting the women only won because the game is easy. He sounds like a nasty piece of work.

As for the 'well she shouldn't have taken her top off then' (which reads to me like, well she shouldn't have got drunk then/walked home by herself then/wore that outfit etc), that doesn't excuse a sexist remark. And a remark is different coming from a male than from a female because of the power differential between the sexes. A man should never make a comment like that about a woman. Different if a woman made it, sad, but true.

Again, if you follow his tweets you'd see he does similar for the men's game so not suggesting they only one because the gane is easy, more like men why do you make it so difficult. Anyway, it's deleted now

Let's stick to facts.

  1. Regardless of gender, removing a top during a goal celebration is a yellow card offence.
  2. Most women wear bras especially when playing sport. In my case not doing so would lead to 2 black eyes.
  3. Sports bras are designed to be seen.
  4. Wearing a bra or referring to a bra is not sexist.

Sex. Not gender.

Christ it's like a Sun headline isn't it?

Agree that for such a humongous event it would have been way classier to stick to the ladies achievements. Class however isn't a thing I'd ever associate with Linekar though.

Well done Lionesses - I'm so bloody proud 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Interesting point re it being a Sun headline. If I saw it on the red top I would think there was more to it than a play on words and I'd roll my eyes about it. I have changed my mind now and agree it was a shame he didn't resist the need to make a bra joke in the context of this historic sporting event .

Interesting how you haven't followed the other posters on here, who have said the same as me. If you want to carry on being offended where no offence was intended, fill your boots. I stand by everything I have said and your obsession with my views will make not one iota of difference. Next time, however, try 'educating yourself' on the person who has meant to have offended. Lineker is as far removed from sexism, as he is racism.

I don’t need educating on what I find to be sexist. I don’t need to contextualise men’s sexist remarks.
I’m not obsessed with you. I am replying to you. In this instance you were talking about me to another poster. I am entitled to reply to you. I have replied to others who have commented on what I’ve said.
I haven’t commented on people who are just sharing their differing opinion because they’re entitled to have that opinion. However, yours have always included some form personal and belittling comment along the lines of me being “uneducated” about sexism, having no sense of humour, letting women down, fuelling sexism etc.
I am perfectly happy for people to have other opinions to me. What I will not listen to is you telling women to shut up about sexism.

MarshaMelrose · 02/08/2022 10:07

I don't think that's true actually. But I guess it would depend how you define sexism. I think his past behaviour could be considered sexist. You'd have to ask Michelle.

I am not aware of his discriminating against women, quite the opposite, so no, he is not sexist, going by its legal definition.

So stop listening then. Nice try about others, who HAVE said the same as me, being entitled to their opinions. I guess they aren't 'internalising misogynism'. In fact, it seems like now is a great time to find the ignore button.

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 02/08/2022 12:53

@Mississipi71 just because you don’t see something doesn’t mean it isn’t there and women are wrong. I won’t ignore you telling me or others to stop talking about sexism or blaming women for misogyny existing.
It’s abhorrent.
There are many well known and well read feminists who believe his statement was rooted in misogyny and have publicly said so.
Even with this in mind, I really don’t have an issue with you having an alternative opinion. I just take particular issue with you belittling and blaming women.

MintyDogBreath · 02/08/2022 14:31

It was a sports bra, how was it not well supportive?

It is a sports bra but it didn't look very supportive when she was running around in it. Her boobs aren't small. I would be advising her to get a Shock Absorber one. They are very structured and boobs don't move much.

There are sports bras, and there are sports bras that do a good job.

SeasonFinale · 02/08/2022 14:34

I can't get too worked up about it. It was a play on words and a nod to her celebration. That was all. Do you even know why she celebrated the way she did? That was a nod to a certain male player's celebration. Was she being sexist by doing that?

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 02/08/2022 14:52

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 00:08

She ran about in her bra, the tweet mentioned the word bra. It was a completely relevant jokey comment.

There is absolutely nothing sexist or embarrassing at all.

This.

Mississipi71 · 02/08/2022 15:28

After reading some comments, I am happy to remain a non feminist. I make zero apologies for it either.

Different if a woman made it, sad, but true.

Oh for goodness sake, that was a take on his famous saying from years ago ""Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win." He updated it to say that at the end the English women win.

You are just showing your ignorance of famous football sayings.

Do you follow Lineker on Twitter? If you don't, you have no idea of the context of his tweets in the male and female games. I doubt that even is relevant to you, though. That fact spoils your crusade.
