The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

I wish I'd copied my reply to the other post on this (where the post was deleted partly because "the thread has gone in a different way to how she'd envisaged." - I bet it did....)

Anyway, to paraphrase my earlier post:
I can't get offended about this - she took her shirt off and ran around in her bra to celebrate her goal. That is what he was referring to.
If you choose to ignore that and choose to be outraged about it, that's up to you.
I just wanted to point out though that if she had then got a 2nd yellow card and got sent off, which could have let Germany win, she wouldn't be the hero she is now.

ShrillSiren22 · 01/08/2022 01:26

He could have just congratulated the amazing achievement of the women. Instead he reduced to a stupid pun about a bra because, well, tits lol, or something. Look at some of the replies to that tweet of you don’t think him commenting on the bra made blokes think it was ok to then make a load of really, really nasty “jokes” about whether her tits were big enough to warrant a bra, whether them bouncing around was enough to get the ref on side and loads of other sexist puns like “well done to the Ironesses, now get back to ironing”. He’s showing how acceptable sexist jokes are.

ParanoidGynodroid · 01/08/2022 01:28

Her sports bra had a Nike swoosh on it. Maybe she's getting a bonus from them for the advertising... and GL also, for further drawing attention to it!

von1471 · 01/08/2022 01:28

Not bothered about what he tweeted but he’s still an overpaid opinionated twat!

But his joke wasn't sexist?

He's not responsible if a load of dickheads piled onto his tweet with stupid comments.

Her running around in a bra really is an unusual moment in women's football. It's literally just a pun based on a memorable moment from the game. I guarantee you if some bloke had his shorts pulled down and bared his arse, Lineker would have been tweeting humorously about that too.

And also, if a bloke had his arse bared or even his penis accidentally exposed, and Gary referenced it humorously in a tweet, I GUARANTEE you there wouldn't be a thread with a bunch of men outraged that Lineker had mentioned it. This kind of outraged response is really embarrassing, and underlines why we're not taking seriously when we make genuine claims of sexism.

@TempNameChangexx

This is an excellent point.

Taking your shirt off is always a bookable offence, and she's bloody lucky that the whole thing didn't go tits up with a second yellow card.

😂

🤔 Because they’ll be deleted. And risk losing their account. That’s not bizarre.

And I wouldn't mind betting that 95% of these dickish blokes who have made comments have watched far more womens football than 95% of the offended brigade. Most of those complaining had never even heard of Chloe Kelly before..

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 01/08/2022 02:06

Do we really have to keep dismissing this stuff?

She took her top off and made it about her and her bra!

How to underachieve made simple. Well done for all those little girls watching, thinking this is how you behave when you win.

Tiani4 · 01/08/2022 02:16

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 00:08

She ran about in her bra, the tweet mentioned the word bra. It was a completely relevant jokey comment.

There is absolutely nothing sexist or embarrassing at all.

This ^^ HmmHmm

I really hate it as a feminist when people misuse sexism allegations for something that was clearly an in-joke related to context of what occurred on the pitch after , following on from a celebratory tweet about the success of a female team .

It's so unnecessary when there are actual damaging misogynistic stuff elsewhere.

Let's be proportionate and reasonable please or you damage the genuine issues.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 02:23

Tasteless and unnecessary.

It’s school boy sexism “a bra! a bra! look she was wearing a bra cos she has boobies” snigger snigger.

And if you’re under any illusion this wasn’t problematic just look at all the creepy fuckers he emboldened to talk about the womens’ bodies and dehumanise them with grim sexual and masturbatory references.

sidheandlight · 01/08/2022 02:30

WeAreAllLionesses · 01/08/2022 00:06

They've done brilliantly - nothing else matters!

But they haven't, they literally hand passed a sure goal out of the net. A sullied win.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 02:31

And the assumption that she removed her shirt to flash her bra or worse her body not because she wanted to wave her shirt in celebration, is what makes the tweet and many of the comments on this thread particularly egregious.

Women get teased about their bras and their boobs incessantly as tweens and teens. For girls who play sport it’s particularly bad and is oft cited as a reason they stop participating.

OP fortunately plenty of men and women agreeing with you and holding Gary to account on Twitter.

I love football. I watch plenty of male and female football. Men taking off their shirts is fairly common - although less so now because it's an instant yellow card offence.

It's not common for women to take off their shirt and run around all over the pitch for a consideration time in celebration with their sports bra on show.

I've got absolutely zero issue with the fact that she did but I did double-take because it's so unusual. I'm fairly certain she could have found umpteen other ways to celebrate enthusiastically but she deliberately chose to remove her shirt - a very unusual action for a female footballer. To say the least. I doubt that she has any issues whatsoever with her bra or boobs being the subject of conversation. She will have known the likely reaction.

Also, footballers typically plan their celebrations. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if she'd always planned to remove her shirt if she scored. Ripping your shirt off and waving it above your head isn't exactly a natural reaction.

I couldn't give a toss about her removing her shirt (other than doing something deliberately that will get her booked). It's just a sports bra FFS. I really really don't care. And bizarrely maybe the fact that a female player was so relaxed about flashing her sport bra and body is a GOOD message to send out. Nothing to see here - just a regular old sports bra and female chest.

The hyperbole about sexism on this thread is absolutely insane.

nettie434 · 01/08/2022 03:06

There are much worse examples of sexism in sport, like the difference between the clothing that women and men wear in athletics. At least the women dressed the same as the men, even down to the 'bras' worn by players to (as I pointed out on the deleted thread) record their speed, distance run etc.

Why not worry about the difference in sponsorship or wages between men and women instead of a tweet from someone who has gone out of his way to support women's football?

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 03:21

has anyone said she did it specifically to flash her bra or body?

She took her shirt off and thus was wearing just her bra. Which is not allowed for either males or females.

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 03:25

He’s showing how acceptable sexist jokes are.

no he isn't because he didn't make a sexist joke.

the twats making comments about ironing etc made sexist jokes but he wasn't one of them.

PlantSpider · 01/08/2022 03:39

I did laugh at this though.

I thought this tweet on the subject was excellent - I don't follow Linneker.

daisychain01 · 01/08/2022 03:44

You're weakening the case for real sexism by jumping on Linaker's comment - and talking in terms of "keep dismissing" is ridiculous.

get a grip - a female football player rips her shirt off and runs around the pitch, big deal. A male former football player makes an innocuous gag about what the woman did, intentionally, to happily draw attention to herself on a great night for women's football.

All good fun, put away your kill-joy cats bum face, it doesn't suit you,

ilovesooty · 01/08/2022 03:46

Nightlystroll · 01/08/2022 01:19

If anyone else had said it, I wouldn't care. But he's a vile pig so I'm happy for him to be condemned for breathing never mind saying something.

Disgusting comment.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/08/2022 03:52

the bra was hardly revealing
I was more offended that all the women on the BBC's commentary team thought it appropriate to teeter around in vertiginous stilettos.

HappyDays40 · 01/08/2022 04:11

I'm no fan of Gary Lineker but coming out in your underwear on TV, or course you'd comment. It was relevant and a play on words.

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 01/08/2022 06:52

I agree with you OP. If a male player had done this, it would never be mentioned by anyone. There would be no “quip”. It devalues her moment to being about her underwear. I think it’s sexism.
