To ask...Truss or Sunak?

It's no surprise that these two are on the final ticket.

I assume Truss will win, which means there'll probably be another leadership election in about a year. She's already announced that she'll 'hit the ground on day one.' The word 'running' would have really helped there.

I think she would be a gift for Labour - Rishi is a far better candidate, despite being an entirely imperfect one.

Whaddyall think?

So what do we pick for Truss and what for Sunak? Can you be more specific? Like YABU for Truss, YANBU for Sunak???

LoReNewYork · 20/07/2022 17:38

Oh God, I didn't realise there a was a vote. How do I turn it off? I just wanted to chat about everyone's thoughts.

Can I disable that?

It's like a choice between a cat shit sandwich and a dog shit sandwich

AND someone has chosen it for you Hmm

LoReNewYork · 20/07/2022 17:39

Okay...let's go with:

YABU - Truss

YANBU - Sunak?

Argh. I've cronked my own thread straight away, haven't I? Grin

I choose chaos with Ed Milliband (sorry, had to)

Truss would be a gift to anyone wanting conservatives out in next GE, so hope it's her.

Cool thanks. That's helpful!!! Smile

I’m not sure if you’re polling for predictions of preference.

I think Sunak would be the least bad.

However, I expect Truss will win (in what will likely be a new low point for the country).

Glencanto · 20/07/2022 17:49

Predictions or* preference

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 20/07/2022 17:49

You can't disable the vote @LoReNewYork sorry. Never mind. Smile No harm done. The vote will show an instant result too.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 20/07/2022 17:53

Sunak is too slick, it’s impossible to know what he really thinks about anything.

Truss isn’t slick enough; so leaden it leads to the suspicion that she’s unable to think at all.

I reckon Truss will get it, because she’s easier for the really right-wing Tory MPs to control. And her blethering about low taxes and hawkish defence spending gets the armchair generals all excited.

The interesting thing will be who goes in key Cabinet positions.

And yes, Truss is more beatable by Labour than Sunak. But she’d have over two years to do plenty of damage before that potentially happens.

LoReNewYork · 20/07/2022 17:53

Yep, that's where I'm at.

Sorry about the vote thing - thanks WhileMyGuitar, I'll just brace myself for dozens of people getting narky with me for being inept Grin

Labour should run that as its electoral campaign slogan.

ddl1 · 20/07/2022 17:55

Starmer!

But if it must be one of these two, Sunak. Truss would be a worse embarrassment than Johnson.

Glencanto · 20/07/2022 17:59

Agreed that Truss, remarkably, would be a downgrade on Johnson.

And I find it unspeakably pathetic that she dressed up as Margret Thatcher for the first debate.

Swizandswap · 20/07/2022 17:59

Well I'm glad Liz Truss is in the final two, I don't trust or like Sunak one bit.

From a personal point of view Truss has a fantastic view and standpoint on our environment, she is the only candidate to discuss more than Carbon and actually supports biodiversity and our environment. She has a good ecological understanding. During the hustling Liz brought up the need for country wide surveying for all our biodiversity and at risk species. She gets environmental issues, and for me personally that's a huge plus for some one understands and appreciates the importance of ecosystem services and the green economy.

LoReNewYork · 20/07/2022 18:02

Swizandswap good points, but don't you think that she be completely and utterly hamstrung on any green issues by the loons on the far right of the party, who have basically ushered her in?

OP posts:
Splicebaked · 20/07/2022 18:02

The fact that Sunak has come this far at all in the light of recent events means the Tories are just in it for themselves.

You’re kidding right?

She has an abysmal record on environmental matters and works with US climate change deniers.

CapMarvel · 20/07/2022 18:05

Liz Truss is a fucking lunatic. Says a lot about the tory party that she is considered one of the 2 best options to lead them.

As ever it comes down whether it's better to sacrifice the next couple of years in order to ensure the tories lose the GE or putting the country into vaguely capable hands, and I use the term 'capable' very loosely.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 20/07/2022 18:05

The nature survey is an important thing to do but to me it feels like tinkering around the edges of the edges, compared to doing anything meaningful to cut emissions, such as better house building standards or moving more towards green energy.

I watched that debate and I thought it made her sound mad; like she was going to be off counting butterflies while simultaneously signing off mass fracking in Lancashire.

The fact that Sunak has come this far at all in the light of recent events means the Tories are just in it for themselves.

This shouldn't come as a surprise, surely.

Loics · 20/07/2022 18:07

I mean, it's the lesser of two evils, but if it's one of those 2 - Sunak. However, as others have said Truss will be an absolute gift in making sure the Tories don't survive the next election, so there is a great upside to her winning!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 20/07/2022 18:08

I suppose a lot of the Tory party membership are rural, so nature surveys probably seem more meaningful to them than public transport or pollution in cities.
