To ask...Truss or Sunak?

It's no surprise that these two are on the final ticket.

I assume Truss will win, which means there'll probably be another leadership election in about a year. She's already announced that she'll 'hit the ground on day one.' The word 'running' would have really helped there.

I think she would be a gift for Labour - Rishi is a far better candidate, despite being an entirely imperfect one.

Whaddyall think?

Truss being endorsed by Rees-Mogg and Dorries says it all.

And Andrea Jenkyns.

Glencanto · 20/07/2022 22:43

bumbledeedum · 20/07/2022 22:37

@Glencanto all fair points.

I'm not sure I'd trust Truss to organise a piss in a brewery. Actually I am sure, I wouldn't.

But while I agree inflation & a lot of the cost of living pressures are much further reaching than the UK - Ukraine/Russia, oil etc, I don't think Sunak's track record as chancellor is great. PP summed it up far better than me but eat out to help out, PPE contracts, track and trace etc etc. Even recent decisions such as the fuel levy reduction was paltry compared to other countries such as France.

It really is a choice of 2 shit sandwiches.

I’ve reached my limit for defending Sunak
(I’m going to have to grab a shower as is) but he does inspire a modicum more confidence in me than Truss does.

Glencanto · 20/07/2022 22:44

And actually, I agree that a Sunak cabinet would be less of a clown convention than a Truss one.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/07/2022 22:47

Jesus H. Christ, how the hell did we end up here? It’s insane.
200,000 mostly male, white, middle aged plus, £100,000 plus earners from the Home Counties choosing the (inadequate) person who is going to steer us through the most difficult period in living memory.

These two candidates are the best that a nation of almost 70 million people can muster? Ye Gods, what hope is there?

StoneofDestiny · 20/07/2022 22:48

Sunak is a convicted criminal.
Truss is as think as mince.

what a choice!

eastegg · 20/07/2022 22:58

Loics · 20/07/2022 18:34

The press seems to think that at least the majority of those who supported Penny Mordaunt will now vote for Truss, so she'll gain more votes from MPs whose preferred candidate has now been eliminated, while Sunak won't gain any more votes, or at least not enough to beat Truss.

It goes to the membership now, not MPs.

eastegg · 20/07/2022 22:59

Although I suppose the MPs get to vote again as part of that. Not sure, never thought about that!

eastegg · 20/07/2022 23:02

The only vaguely positive thing I can think of to say is that neither of the candidates are white males.

Labour will never win a GE without Scotland and they will never regain Scotland.

So we are on to the next shade of blue - Truss is the useful idiot, Sunak slick and power hungry. They’ve just about killed off the NHS, I wonder which minority and/or public service will be targeted next.

Knowing how racist many Tory local parties and voters are I’d be very surprised if Sunak got elected - but then Tory voters do as they are told by the tabloid rags, the most useful of idiots.

I know where I’ll be - the picket line.

@ITUnurse Education.

They are already dismantling the democratic overview and scrutiny of our schools.

briannixon · 20/07/2022 23:05

Sunak at risk of losing supporters before the last TV Hustings said, "No Tax Cuts yet, we have to control inflation".

Truss has been saying she would cut taxes from first day in office.
On that point Sunak is much more realistic than Truss so I would prefer him.
We cannot afford a continuity candidate. We need sensible.

Consider both Front Benches for a better alternative.
At the start Sunak was about 3/1 against even getting into Final 2. Mordaunt was odds on Fav.
Betting for PM has Truss favourite, And Sunak 15/8.
Back the outsider.

Twillow · 20/07/2022 23:08

Hmm. Rock, hard place springs to mind.

Yes. This.

Why do people think truss will win when Sunak has led all the way through?

Because the Tory Party members are racist POS who won’t vote for someone who isn’t white, and Liz Truss is their want fodder.

WudYouSayItInRealLife · 21/07/2022 00:08

I'd go for Truss because I really really couldn't hack S being pm. I'd have preferred some of the other choices to either of them.

It was disgusting how S dealt with the many millions who were left out of any financial help over the pandemic. We were all in it together..... except those that weren't 😡😡😡

He's about sound bites and photo shoots. I prefer less slickness and more morals

WudYouSayItInRealLife · 21/07/2022 00:09

Both options are terrible though

Mybumlooksbig · 21/07/2022 00:13

Ugh.... Sunak if I HAD to pick

Would quite like a GE....

WinterMusings · 21/07/2022 00:20

We're fucked either way. Probably more fucked over by Sunak and more fucked about my Truss. Bring back Boris.

cherish123 · 21/07/2022 00:58

Both awful but I worry about Liz's eagerness to antagonise Russia. I think she'll lose a General Election. I would prefer Rishi - less bad choice

Glencanto · 21/07/2022 02:53

WinterMusings · 21/07/2022 00:20

We're fucked either way. Probably more fucked over by Sunak and more fucked about my Truss. Bring back Boris.

Although Boris is, of course, one of the reasons there are so few credible politicians left in the Conservative Party (having expelled them).

avamiah · 21/07/2022 03:22

Surely not Sunak.🫣
I thought his wife and her family were multi millionaires or multi multi millionaires?
No problem with anyone being wealthy but I do when it comes to them running our country.

Has he heard of a NHS Dentist? as I used to have one and pay NHS dental charges until my dentist decided to become a private dentist and charge £90 for 1 filling.

My question for him would be,

  1. Has he ever been in horrendous pain with tooth ache
  2. Who is his Dentist?

In my opinion these 2 questions should be put to him on live TV.

the80sweregreat · 21/07/2022 04:36

The daily Mail comments page is al ' don't vote for snake Sunak , bring back Boris ' etc
They seem to forget BJ made him chancellor in the first place!

Tiani4 · 21/07/2022 10:20

They are both terrible
But then tories are terrible

So as a Labour Party supporter I would be very happy in particular if the awful Truss was voted in - but stopped from doing too much damage but fractions within her own party- so that there is a bigger swing to Labour next election

Sunak has a tad more credibility but his stated policy plans are still damaging and the thing with his wife? Non domiciled tax exemption? It is shocking that we have ministers/ politicians in real power who don't see that even if something is legal through a loophole, it is morally the wrong thing to do - we don't want politicians who don't see themselves as working for the people in the country but see what they can avoid paying...

Tiani4 · 21/07/2022 10:43

If labour won majority of England and Wales and NI (although usually few seats are won by either Rory or Labour in NI) then SNP and Labour could form a coalition government. There are 543 English MPs and only 57 Scottish, 32 welsh and 18 NI ones.

Tony Blair in 1997 won with Labour with a majority of 413 seats and that was when England had only 529 English MPs and 72 Scottish MP seats , wales had 40 and NI same at 18. To be fair 56 of those He won were Scottish Labour seats when SNP wasn't doing well under Alex Salmond.
But currently SNP have 44 MPs.

Scotland need a voice so I have no problem with a coalition government - I wish there was more of a voice for NI, Wales and Scotland in parliament. It's my experience through Welsh friends that wales doesn't have same health funding or hospital care provision than most of England has access to. Social care in NI is also far behind resources for social care in England Scotland and Wales.

Hoppinggreen · 21/07/2022 10:56

Part of me feels I should be celebrating the fact that we wont be getting a white upper middle class as our next PM for a change but given the 2 options I just cant.
