To ask...Truss or Sunak?

It's no surprise that these two are on the final ticket.

I assume Truss will win, which means there'll probably be another leadership election in about a year. She's already announced that she'll 'hit the ground on day one.' The word 'running' would have really helped there.

I think she would be a gift for Labour - Rishi is a far better candidate, despite being an entirely imperfect one.

Whaddyall think?

Hmmmm... I can't state a preference as it's a choice b/w two shit sarnies as per pp.

But I think Sunak will win it. There are three criteria of in/exclusion at play: race, sex and class/wealth. Sunak beats Truss on both sex and class. She has that pinched, humourless, effortfully ambitious middle-class air, while he reeks of wealth and ease, which I suspect will be like catnip to the shire-dwelling Tory base.

Then the Tories will start crowing about how well they do diversity, when it's all just about the strength of class prejudice among them outweighing sexism and racism occasionally. Brrrrrrr.....

Hoping for Truss…

She’s my MP and awful. She has no link to the area and was parachuted into it as a safe seat, so safe that she didn’t even bother to campaign here during the last election.

Meanwhile, the local hospital is held up by over a thousand supports, and our town school was left to rot for many years.

She never responds to constituent’s emails and is well known for turning up for photo opportunities and then leaving immediately afterwards. I met her once at a fundraising event early in her MP career, with no preconceptions as I didn’t really know much about her at that point, and came away shocked at her disinterest in engaging with any of us, other than for the photo opportunity.

Her voters are mostly elderly people who have retired to the area, outnumbering the locals - one ward in our town was recently reported to have the highest percentage of elderly people in the country.

So fingers crossed that she gets it, it leads to her downfall and we get a new MP as soon as possible!

Having said that I really dislike Sunak too….

Lindasllama · 20/07/2022 21:50

I'm a civil servant.

I REALLY want Truss. Out of her depth in a puddle and thicker than mince with added thickener ..

Then hopefully the Tories will be banished for a good long while - whilst we get a decent government who understand that to have decent public services you need to fund them properly .

The fact that she's very easy to take the piss out of doesn't do any harm either .. might as well have a laugh on the way to the horror the next few months is sure to bring.

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 21:54

Liz is pure cheese and will be out of her depth
If it was anyone else I'd feel sorry for them...

caringcarer · 20/07/2022 21:55

Sunak raised taxes to highest in 70 years. He gave away too much on furlough and self employed scheme then tried to claw it back too quickly. He said he knows no working class people. His wife is a billionaire he does not understand struggle some have just to exist. At least Truss went to a comprehensive in Yorkshire. I think she would do a better job than Sunak but she will not attract the voters as even though hard working she has a very bland personality.

Walkaround · 20/07/2022 21:57

When I think of Liz Truss, I just think of the Radio 4 Dead Ringers satirisation of her as a talentless self-publicist. (I KNOW!).

stillherenow · 20/07/2022 21:58

Putin hates Liz Truss doesn't he? I mean that's good in some ways but bad in others

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 22:01

I'm team Sunak , but only because his better with his economy plans and I think he knows what he is actually doing ..
Tackling inflation seems to be the key here
His background isn't great ( billionaire wife. the green card etc) but Truss will be even worse and will probably appoint someone who is a terrible chancellor too! I don't trust her judgement , not up to me though :(
Don't have a vote.

Have you forgotten the fact he's been the chancellor while we've hit the highest inflation in 40 years? Talk about plans to clean up his own shit

caringcarer · 20/07/2022 22:06

@kidsaretryingtodistroyme, it is for the Conservative members only to vote for their leader. Just like Labour voters vote for Labour leader. Don't know why you don't think that is fair? At next election electorate will choose which party they want to rule, just like at last election.

caringcarer · 20/07/2022 22:06

@watchorulo, yes some time in June just gone.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/07/2022 22:07

The SNP have 44 seats in Westminster. Yes they make it harder for Labour to get an outright majority, but not impossible (Blair’s best was a 179 seat majority).

Blair had 56 seats in Scotland in 1997, there is currently 1 Labour MP from Scotland. I agree with the PP, Labour will never win without its old Scottish heartland.

Planetearthisscrewed · 20/07/2022 22:09

I'm beyond staggered that we may end up with someone even worse than Johnson in Truss

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 22:12

I understand that Sunak isn't popular because of the cost of living etc etc. but I still trust him more than Liz!
It's not a great choice though, granted

ThinWomansBrain · 20/07/2022 22:12

Get behind the campaign for proportional representation - Make Votes Matter

it's appalling that for millions of people in safe seats, their vote is worth sod all. Given that with the SNP mean so many fewer labour seats in Scotland, we're going to be stuck with a useless tory government forever with FPTP VOTING.

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 22:13

I'm all for PR, but I bet they won't allow a vote in that ! Too many other things need sorting out first

@PantyMcPantFace Grin

What I would like to know is which candidate the civil servants would prefer ?

i’m a civil servant. see my previous post. neither. both are shit.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 20/07/2022 22:18

Not a great choice really. I cannot stand Truss and her stance on the Good Friday Agreement which she is willing to break but she does not have a leg to stand on as this is backed by the eu and U.S. They messed up with Brexit and now and trying to keep changing the rules with regards to the northern Ireland protocal so she can piss right off with her snotty old Tory head. The other one seems to be more calm and no doubt would make a better leader but has he really any idea how people are struggling with day to day costs as he is super ri h and his wife a mega millionaire. Wish Penny had been in the running as seemed the best option. Truss very far right so not a good person to be in. There should be a general election.

Glencanto · 20/07/2022 22:32

bumbledeedum · 20/07/2022 22:04

I don’t like Sunak or the Tories, and would never vote for either, but inflation is crazy everywhere now, it’s not a problem unique to the UK (and we’re probably further hindered by Brexit).

I’ll gladly lay the blame at the Conservatives door come election time (as they did with Labour during the last financial crisis) but truthfully it’s hard to assess Sunak’s culpability given the current, global economic backdrop.

Purely for the sake of debating the merits of Sunak vs Truss, I don’t know that inflation comes into it. You wouldn’t trust Truss to deal with the inflation of balloons at a birthday party.

bumbledeedum · 20/07/2022 22:37

@Glencanto all fair points.

I'm not sure I'd trust Truss to organise a piss in a brewery. Actually I am sure, I wouldn't.

But while I agree inflation & a lot of the cost of living pressures are much further reaching than the UK - Ukraine/Russia, oil etc, I don't think Sunak's track record as chancellor is great. PP summed it up far better than me but eat out to help out, PPE contracts, track and trace etc etc. Even recent decisions such as the fuel levy reduction was paltry compared to other countries such as France.

It really is a choice of 2 shit sandwiches.

SavingsThreads · 20/07/2022 18:31

Why do people think truss will win when Sunak has led all the way through?

Because MPs votes don't relate to members' votes. Despite having more than one brain cell Sunak is seen as a traitor who forced the sainted Johnson out. Besides he's not white.

Govesdancingpartner · 20/07/2022 22:39

I will vote for Rishi I think he is a safe pair of hands.
Lizz Truss really annoyed me at the first debate she looked like she had just climbed out of a wheelie bin. Her big bow was not even tied properly it was on one side
Jeez if you cannot dress yourself properly how the heck do you think you can run a Country. Sloppy dresser

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 20/07/2022 22:40

It's like being asked to choose which leg you want broken. Neither thanks!!

Glencanto · 20/07/2022 22:40

Even If you discounted every seat they held in Scotland in 1997, 2001 and 2005 (and gave them to the SNP instead), Labour would have had majorities following each of those elections.

The rise of the SNP undoubtedly makes Labour’s job harder, but saying Labour can never win without Scotland is entirety out of step with fairly recent history.

cariadlet · 20/07/2022 22:42

FunDragon · 20/07/2022 19:55

Do you? She’s been largely silent on any issue involving abortion rights (as has Rishi). Penny Mordaunt was far and away the most pro-choice candidate and she’s out.

Penny Mordaunt would have been terrible for Women's Rights. She stood at the despatch box and said Transwomen Are Women. She wants to give away our single sex spaces.

Liz Truss is useless in a lot of ways but at least she knows what a woman is.
When Nick Ferrari asked her, "Is it fair to say that a woman has a vagina?" she replied, "Women do have vaginas, Nick" which is the kind of statement of the obvious that a lot of politicians seem to be incapable of making.
