To ask...Truss or Sunak?

It's no surprise that these two are on the final ticket.

I assume Truss will win, which means there'll probably be another leadership election in about a year. She's already announced that she'll 'hit the ground on day one.' The word 'running' would have really helped there.

I think she would be a gift for Labour - Rishi is a far better candidate, despite being an entirely imperfect one.

Whaddyall think?

Who ever it is doesn't matter, they'll go through a few before losing the next election

Swizandswap · 20/07/2022 18:09

@LoReNewYork That is always a risk and you cannot mitigate risk. But I believe she is the better of the two candidates.

I was extremely annoyed when C4 cut her off explaining her stance on species surveys, claiming as Glencanto does in the post about were discussing Carbon. Climate change and environmental issues are far more than Carbon, it's just news and media have focused on this particular point of a very large complex subject and ignore/mis understand all the associated issues.

ThreeLittleDots · 20/07/2022 18:11

I honestly think the Tory party have gone mad and are now satirising politics for their own amusement.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 20/07/2022 18:05

The nature survey is an important thing to do but to me it feels like tinkering around the edges of the edges, compared to doing anything meaningful to cut emissions, such as better house building standards or moving more towards green energy.

I watched that debate and I thought it made her sound mad; like she was going to be off counting butterflies while simultaneously signing off mass fracking in Lancashire.

This ignorant post is the perfect example of a lack of understanding of ecology and habitat conservation and the role they play in our survival and the climate. Maybe as a science you should study it.

Echobelly · 20/07/2022 18:15

I'd say Sunak as he's left of a right-wing reactionary than Truss. But while he sounds very convincing and reasonable, at the end of the day, he has no clue what life is like for ordinary people and will make all the errors that come with that.

Truss is more likely to misstep and do and say stupid things and to support reactionary ideas to fight things that aren't even issues, but possibly the worst Sunak will be is ineffectual at least.

Nat6999 · 20/07/2022 18:15

It's the best thing for Labour, they will both rip each other to bits & divide the party again.

crumpet · 20/07/2022 18:18

Sunak might be least inflammatory re EU and Northern Ireland.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 20/07/2022 18:20

I'm not from the UK but have a big interest in UK politics.

Just when you think there isn't much worst the Boris....enter Liz Truss. Can anyone highlight one positive, professional, intelligent or capable thing about the woman?

I don't particularly like Sunak either but at least he is intelligent and understandable.

RishiRich · 20/07/2022 18:20

Sunak, I think. Although I liked him better when he just focused on economics. His views on some other areas are a bit too Tory for me.

EuripidesEumenides · 20/07/2022 18:24

I'd probably have to choose Sunak over Truss but only in the same way that I would have to choose influenza over ebola.

Heronwatcher · 20/07/2022 18:24

I’m also of the view that if Liz Truss is the best we can do, the system is well and truly broken. And part of this is that by “we” of course what I actually mean is “the members of the Tory party”- aka mostly white, middle class over 50s- and therein lies the biggest issue.

bellabasset · 20/07/2022 18:27

I understand that they want Johnson out of government altogether, will Chris Pincher resign. That's 2 possible by elections. Tobias Elwood has lost the whip, Gove's been sacked. Truss was a remainer. Are people happy with Brexit or do they feel they were misled?

I won't vote Conservative again, prefer LibDems but would vote tactically yo get the Tory MP out locally

SavingsThreads · 20/07/2022 18:31

Why do people think truss will win when Sunak has led all the way through?

Why do people think truss will win when Sunak has led all the way through?

Because when it comes down to the final 2 it's down to the tory party membership, not MPS.

And Liz Truss is polling quite a bit higher with the membership than Sunak.

God fucking help us.

SavingsThreads · 20/07/2022 18:31

Why do people think truss will win when Sunak has led all the way through?

The press seems to think that at least the majority of those who supported Penny Mordaunt will now vote for Truss, so she'll gain more votes from MPs whose preferred candidate has now been eliminated, while Sunak won't gain any more votes, or at least not enough to beat Truss.

Flev · 20/07/2022 18:34

Sunak seems to have some brains, but it's debatable if he'll use them for good. Truss seems to have few brains so it's going to be sheer dumb luck if she makes any decent decisions.

It really is a case if which brand of shit we want. By a tiny margin I'd take Sunak, but it really shows how horrendous the Conservatives are if after Johnson this is the best they can find.

Loics · 20/07/2022 18:35

@CapMarvel explained it much it better than me!

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 20/07/2022 18:35

Neither but both would work as I believe the Tories to be, now, unelectable.

tttigress · 20/07/2022 18:38

Truss is just awful, she makes no connection with the public.

Here vibe/presence seems very off.

Meant her, we need edit!!

minou123 · 20/07/2022 18:39

Can I choose:

YAVVU - Neither. A can of baked beans would be a better PM.

But, if you put a gun to my head and made me choose, I'd say Sunak. He is less embarrassing than Truss.

Thwomp · 20/07/2022 18:40

Truss is absolutely abysmal. Unlikable, unintelligent, unprincipled and ineffectual. It’s hard to think of a less competent politician.

I hope she wins.

Sockwomble · 20/07/2022 18:40

Truss being endorsed by Rees-Mogg and Dorries says it all.

RockandRollsuicide · 20/07/2022 18:41

None of them speak fo me.

All seem utterly boring. I don't think you need to have lived in poverty to understand it but the frustration with the system is something rto be experienced.

Yorkshirepuddingwithsyrupnotgravy · 20/07/2022 18:41

That's like being asked whether you would prefer a colonoscopy or root canal.
Um neither!
