To ask...Truss or Sunak?

It's no surprise that these two are on the final ticket.

I assume Truss will win, which means there'll probably be another leadership election in about a year. She's already announced that she'll 'hit the ground on day one.' The word 'running' would have really helped there.

I think she would be a gift for Labour - Rishi is a far better candidate, despite being an entirely imperfect one.

Whaddyall think?

There are over 3 million self employed/freelancers/casual workers who were screwed by Sunak when he illogically and unfairly excluded them from the covid support schemes. A lot of those would have been natural Tory voters who are now very unlikely to vote for Sunak as they won't forget the way he abandoned them!

That is true but most of those wouldn't have been paid up members of the party, paying annual subscriptions, anyway. So it is not those people who are choosing this PM on the whole. See my post above.

XingMing · 22/07/2022 21:24

@SheeplessAndCounting , I am probably guilty on several counts by your lights. I didn't rate our local failing comprensive school adequate for my only child for 6th form. I've worked my (self-employed) ass off to have choices and options that weren't simply the basic menu, so please tell me that I am wrong.

I paid for private education when state failed. That sort of makes me a Tory, because I think that a person tries hard to give their child a leg up in life, get them sorted and started, before waving them off to do their thing. And then you stare hard at what's leftover and how you stitch together enough to live the life you want in retirement.

XingMing · 22/07/2022 21:42

we also own our house outright, because we were born in 1956 and have had time to work out the details. No generation gets through all the ups and downs unscathed by events.

I think you must be confusing me with another poster? I've not criticised anybody for being self-employed or sending children to private school. Or saving for retirement.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 21:48

She was only talking about you if you’re a Tory party member @XingMing.

SheeplessAndCounting · 22/07/2022 22:00

@XingMing already said they aren't a member I think, hence my confusion. And in any case I only spoke of the demographic profile of most party members. Obviously not all are the same. And I made no criticism of private schools etc at all. I think somehow posters must have got muddled in people's minds.

SheeplessAndCounting · 22/07/2022 22:13

Competent - try telling that to those individuals who cannot get a passport or a driving test - the Civil Servants are a pox on our democracy

There are backlogs because their funding is repeatedly cut so there aren't enough staff to do the work. That is down to Government. It is impossible for Civil Servants to modernise systems or improve efficiency when Government will not fund the required IT system upgrades, adequate staffing levels, sufficient wages to improve retention, etc.

I was talking about the next GE which is what Rishi is obsessing about - he keeps saying he's the one who can win the next GE and wanting party member votes to be leader for that reason! He's wrong!

Titsflyingsouth · 23/07/2022 08:56

God, it's like picking which gun I want to shoot myself in the foot with...

If forced I'd say Sunak. His plans on taxation are realistic. The Tory' obsession with low taxation is running our public services into the ground. You can't have decent schools and a functioning health service if you are not willing to pay for it.

And also Truss is just an embarrassing moron...

Singinginthesnow · 23/07/2022 09:01

Selfish reason here but sunak wants to raise corporation tax to 25% our company just can't afford this. We have had everything else raised and I think a lot of companies will fold especially small ones like us

hummerbird · 23/07/2022 09:02

.....and Rishi doesn't wear a bloody silly bow on the front of his shirt!

Footle · 23/07/2022 09:07

@hummerbird , no, just a bloody silly tie

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 23/07/2022 09:11

Well Truss is supported by the Daily Mail, and has promised to cut taxes from day one. She will win.

Another laughing stock Prime Minister for us then!

LaurieFairyCake · 20/07/2022 17:38

It's like a choice between a cat shit sandwich and a dog shit sandwich

AND someone has chosen it for you Hmm

This sums it up perfectly, Except I would also add in every other political party. We're doomed!!!😔

MarshaBradyo · 23/07/2022 09:20

Hearing about their focus today, NHS or Kent with laws, I have switched slightly from being surprised to thinking one is appealing to general electorate and other is more to party members

You need to latter to get to GE so Sunak has an uphill battle

He might do it who knows, but Truss is probably closer to the voting members

Blossomtoes · 23/07/2022 09:35

It’s a good point @MarshaBradyo. It seems party members prefer Truss while the wider electorate prefer Sunak. Since the thing party members think is most important is winning the next election, it would be sensible for them to vote accordingly.

balalake · 23/07/2022 10:05

As for the demographic of party members, there is an unknown factor. Anyone who joined before early June can vote, they do not have to be a UK citizen, resident or even former resident. If they live abroad, and claim to be under 26, only £5 a year to join. Same if under 26 here.

So Russians, members of Daesh (islamic state), tea party US Republicans, or even left-wingers who want the worst choice of leader in the belief it will increase the changes of a Tory defeat in 2024, they can all vote.

Lalalolol · 24/07/2022 05:03

@Dotjones

Boris Johnson was born rich whereas Starmer who was born poor went on to become a successful human rights lawyer.
So what Starmer is rich, he is a self made man. Is he not an excellent role model?

Also about Sunak, he is married to daughter of a self made billionaire tech entrepreneur.S Sunak's father was a GP and mother a pharmacist. Liz Truss comes from similar financial background - father a mathematics Professor and mother a nurse. None of these politicians are from poor backgrounds, so not sure why it is mentioned over and over that Sunak is can't relate to average British.

Lizz Truss worked with Shell, like Boris is untrustworthy in her personal life as well.

I don't like any of these two but Truss seems more harmful than Sunak.

Clavinova · 24/07/2022 10:33

Do you admire self-made men or not?

What background does Keir Starmer's wife have? There is very little information about her. Are her family well-off? Is her father a 'self-made' man? Did she attend a private school? Does it matter to you if Starmer's in-laws are wealthy or not?

Sunak can't relate to average British

Sunak and his family used to holiday on the Isle of Wight when he was a child - that's relatable. His parents both worked in customer facing jobs - that's relatable.

This would seem less relatable to most people -
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer plays flute, recorder and piano, and was a Guildhall music scholar

Classical music is an important part of life for one of the UK’s foremost politicians, who has a particular passion for Beethoven piano sonatas.

www.classicfm.com/discover-music/sir-keir-starmer-flute-recorder-guildhall-scholar/

Boris Johnson was born rich whereas Starmer who was born poor

Keir Starmer was not 'born poor' - his parents bought a house with a mortgage before he was born.

Liz Truss - father a mathematics Professor and mother a nurse.

Keir Starmer's mother was a nurse - albeit one with declining health.

Starmer attended a grammar school (in leafy Surrey) which converted to a fee paying school while he was there - Liz Truss won a place at Oxford from an ordinary comprehensive school rated "satisfactory" (or worse - Wikipedia isn't very clear) while she was there.

Rishi Sunak was head boy at Winchester - on his own merits.

Liz Truss worked with Shell, like Boris is untrustworthy in her personal life as well.

Angela Rayner appears to be having a relationship with a married man (according to the Sun/Daily Mail Jan 2022) - I assume you think she is unsuitable to be in Keir Starmer's shadow cabinet? You wouldn't want her to have a senior position in government or represent Labour at PMQs on account of her unreliable personal life?

Keir Starmer is 'untrustworthy' in my opinion - he told LBC in January that there were 'about 6' people with him at the meeting in Durham - Durham police say there were 17 people there. Regardless of whether he was fined or not his account of the event was untruthful.

ilovesooty · 24/07/2022 11:01

@Clavinova quit the whataboutery.

This thread is not about Starmer or Rayner.

balalake · 24/07/2022 11:03

Liz Truss's private life that is publicly known about dates from before becoming an MP indeed possibly before seeking candidacy. Not right but different from Boris Johnson 'bonding over a love of Shakespeare' and trying to get grants from public money for the woman with self-esteem issues.

That is not the reason for not wanting her as Prime Minister. Liz Truss has no track record of really achieving anything.

ilovesooty · 24/07/2022 11:06

I don't care much about Liz Truss's past affair.

There are plenty of other reasons why she would not be a suitable PM.

Rummikub · 24/07/2022 11:08

NightmareSlashDelightful · 20/07/2022 17:53

Sunak is too slick, it’s impossible to know what he really thinks about anything.

Truss isn’t slick enough; so leaden it leads to the suspicion that she’s unable to think at all.

I reckon Truss will get it, because she’s easier for the really right-wing Tory MPs to control. And her blethering about low taxes and hawkish defence spending gets the armchair generals all excited.

The interesting thing will be who goes in key Cabinet positions.

And yes, Truss is more beatable by Labour than Sunak. But she’d have over two years to do plenty of damage before that potentially happens.

Exactly!

She intends to get rid of EU red tape, all our protections gone.

Rishi cos at least he seems sensible.

User6784097 · 24/07/2022 11:11

anyone can vote? That doesn’t make sense!! How can non U.K. people vote!

User6784097 · 24/07/2022 11:12
