To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

Outrageous and yes, gutted for them. Shocking.

Darbs76 · 24/06/2022 15:21

Disgusted. Never had an abortion, was pressured to have one at 16, but had my son. But I think it’s shocking that women have had this basic right taken away from them

HavfrueDenizKisi · 24/06/2022 15:22

It's unbelievable in this day and age really. How can a country go backwards? It feels like Gilead.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 24/06/2022 15:23

Horrified.

Thepeopleversuswork · 24/06/2022 15:23

Agree. Really shocked that this has actually happened. Americans are removing control and agency from women over their bodies and their reproductive rights strategically and it’s really scary.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 24/06/2022 15:23

It's disgraceful. Women will have less rights to their body than a corpse.
The only persons views on abortion that should matter, is the person getting it.

purpleboy · 24/06/2022 15:24

It was to be expected, but honestly I've had the wind taken out of me. I feel sick to my stomach.
Fucking bastards.
Women of America rise up and fight back. Sad

Orangesox · 24/06/2022 15:25

I am utterly gutted for them, and I'm fearful of what might be to come for other nations. I've been in a state of pre-emptive anxiety I think since Poland's ruling, now this, it just feels like an anti-woman snowball is gaining so much momentum that it's going to become unstoppable. It took my breath away seeing the Breaking News Banner pop up on my phone.

In my public health role, I see the impact that unwanted pregnancy has on all manner of women in a vast spectrum of circumstances; to remove that choice, to treat that woman as simply a walking incubator... it's abhorrent.

gerbo · 24/06/2022 15:25

I wonder if there'll be any demonstrations on this here? I'd be there if there were.

DeadButDelicious · 24/06/2022 15:26

I just got a bbc news notification about this. I don't know what to say. Horrendous.

Land of the free indeed.

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 15:26

Unsurprising but still shocking.

The US Supreme Court is nothing but a right wing tool intent on turning America into a theocracy. Revolting.

CMOTDibbler · 24/06/2022 15:26

36 million women are set to lose access to safe abortions. 36 million. And those who passed this legislation aren't the ones who will suffer through it

scrivette · 24/06/2022 15:26

I couldn't believe it when I just saw it.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/06/2022 15:27

Erosion of female/woman’s rights appear to be taking hold across the world. This is a massive step in totally the wrong direction.

Frightening.

OwlOwlOwlCat · 24/06/2022 15:27

I'm horrified too. I'm so sad and angry that women's rights are being taken away from them. The land of the free - what a joke.

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 15:28

And this is where it's headed, they're not just stopping with access to abortion...

'Clarence Thomas writes, in a concurring opinion, that the Supreme Court should reconsider Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell — the rulings that now protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage

This doesn't surprise me.

orwellwasright · 24/06/2022 15:29

Didn't Trump stuff the supreme court full of fascists? Hardly surprising this is the outcome.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/06/2022 15:30

It's basic right to decide about one's own body.

BlusteryLake · 24/06/2022 15:30

How is it OK for small children to be collateral trade off for "the right to bear arms", yet a woman can't have an abortion because "all life is precious"? America is down the pan.

bellamountain · 24/06/2022 15:30

It's horrendous. Truly horrific. Living children are fair game though, go to school at the risk of being shot dead. They don't matter.

Cameleongirl · 24/06/2022 15:31

I live in the US and am equally horrified. The only positive I take from this mess is that the final decision on whether to ban abortions is made at the state level, so many states will still allow them. Where I live, for example, will definitely continue to allow them.

It’s the women in the so-called “Red” states who are going to suffer. ☹️

It's very scary, go to sleep for a moment and all could be lost.

DamnUserName21 · 24/06/2022 15:32

It's crazy and scary times for women. First step to Gilead???
I do hope it doesn't catch on here...

YouSetTheTone · 24/06/2022 15:32

Disgusted with this decision. A women should ALWAYS have the right to choose an abortion.
In America they will back to the hilt the rights for people (usually men) to kill with guns but not for a women to have agency over her own body. They are not pro-life. They are pro-controlling women.

They are not pro-babies and children. If they were they'd enable better access to free health care, free education and make sure they couldn't be shot dead in their classrooms. They are pro-controlling women.

Ending safe access to abortions puts women at risk, both physically and financially. America is going backwards and it's shocking. I could weep for the women there. Women's sports are being destroyed, women's access to single sex spaces ditto. And now they are being forced to go through with pregnancies against their will.
