To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

they want women out of the workforce, at home barefoot and pregnant. women are chattel to them.

Not all. Some want women simply to provide babies for those who cannot have them themselves. The adoption industry is a huge money maker in America.

GU24Mum · 24/06/2022 16:15

It's appalling. Like so many others, I worried that it was going to happen though I hoped it wouldn't really actually happen.... So unless you are reasonably wealthy AND also not under any sort of pressure from a partner/family, you probably still access safe abortion albeit it will take longer so will be later (which is in no-one's interest) but anyone else is abandoned.

It's starting to feel as though we had things about as good as they were going to be a few years ago and everything is on a downhill trajectory.

RadicalisedByMumzNet · 24/06/2022 16:15

Did anyone notice the word Obama avoided using.

Cameleongirl · 24/06/2022 16:16

@Reallyreallyborednow That's what I can't understand, there's no thought about what happens next to the mother and child. How can a 16-year-old, for example, bring up a child without significant support? What if the mother-to-be is heavily addicted to drugs and the baby will be born with significant disabilities? The anti-abortionists don't consider what happens after the birth.

ComDummings · 24/06/2022 16:16

Absolutely horrific assault on human rights, specifically women’s. Abortion is healthcare!

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 16:11

The American constitution really is a load of wank. The various amendments written in 1787 twisted to suit today's partisan point of view. Bullets didn't exist in 1787 but the founding fathers deffo wanted to protect an 18 year old's right in 2022 to walk about with an assault weapon.

Bullets did exist--just as lead balls that could only be shot out with gunpowder. The founder fathers, obviously, didn't foresee the modern-day weaponry of mass destruction.
The 2nd amendment needs a rethink in the context of modern day tech.

The contraception issue also makes me so angry, @dreamingbohemian . Surely easy access to conception =fewer unplanned pregnancies=less need for abortions.

They should be throwing free contraception at people in order to prevent unplanned pregnancies. It’s so illogical. 😡

Yep

you would have thought wanting less abortion would mean a huge drive to make sure contraception is easily and freely accessible to all and every woman. Not actively trying to restrict it/ban certain methods altogether/make it harder to access as many ‘pro-lifers’ wish to.

also the hypocrisy of saying leftover fertilised embryos for IVF don’t count because and quote ‘they are not in a woman’

It is entirely about controlling women, they hate women doing anything with their lives other than being tied down with children. Education and careers and freedom are for men only.

oakleaffy · 24/06/2022 16:19

Really shocking.
Does Morning after pill count?
Women will now have to travel to states where Terminations are legal.
Forcing someone to carry a child they do not want is cruel to the child as well as the mother.

Adoption is not the hunky dory sweet thing it is made out to be, and being as it's America, these babies will likely be sold to the highest bidder via ''Private'' adoption agencies.

butterflied · 24/06/2022 16:19

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 15:26

Unsurprising but still shocking.

The US Supreme Court is nothing but a right wing tool intent on turning America into a theocracy. Revolting.

This. It is absolutely disgusting.

Your blaming women on this site, mainly in the UK for this being overturned.
Did many women in the UK vote for Trump?

You said you've had women on this site telling you it's a price worth paying......

There are a small number of American women on here, even less who voted for trump, and I would love to see the evidence of them saying it's a price worth paying, no actual feminist would ever utter those words.
Your just trying to cause shit, as I said fuck off because now is not the time or place for that stupid level of discussion.

Kidsaretryingtodestroyme · 24/06/2022 16:20

Although Trumpism has led America here, it’s not just American women and girls who are under threat.

Its time for progressives to stop the petty infighting and the mealy mouthed comments. It’s time to stop giving a shit about being accused of sneering at backwards people.

The far right have shown their hand and we need to fight back. Mass disobedience, marches, protests, boycotts of companies who back hard and far right candidates. Drown their voices off the internet, flood the comments sections of the MSN. We will not shrug our shoulders and move on whilst they push us towards Gilead.

I’m in the U.K. but am under no illusion - these malicious forces are also embedded in our own society and wish to have the same control over women and the vulnerable here. People like Dowden, closely linked to the US Heritage Foundation and the MRA, Raab who wants to weaken human right legislation and claims feminists are ‘obnoxious bigots’ wish they had the power of the US Supreme Court to put us in our place.

We will not allow them to push civil rights backwards.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/06/2022 16:20

As said on a previous thread, I'm wondering how much the fact that 6 out of the 9 supreme court justices are catholic has influenced this

I don't agree with the decision, but lets at least be clear that they've not banned abortion; it's simply become an issue for each individual state, though with some of them it may well come to the same thing

It's not so much that they don't consider what happens after the birth, it's that they don't care. What they DO care about is controlling women's bodies.

Ravenclawdropout · 24/06/2022 16:20

@DamnUserName21 I was not giving lecture. I was stating facts about American law and politics. I live in the USA and there is often confusion and incorrect information regarding the USA on MN. Its fine if you are familiar with how American law and politics works, not everyone reading is.

I am off to work now as its 8:20am my time.

Hbh17 · 24/06/2022 16:21

Terrible. And, of course, it won't reduce the total number of abortions. It only reduces the number of safe & legal abortions. Hard to believe that a sophisticated, civilised country could do this in 2022.

Elliania · 24/06/2022 16:21

Guns in America now have more rights than women. America would rather ban abortion before any type of ban on guns - even assault rifles.

This isn't going to stop. Contraception, same sex marriage, voting rights, transgender care, reproductive care and so much more is looking increasingly vunerable right now.

diddl · 24/06/2022 16:23

What I don't understand is if someone is anti abortion-fine, don't have one!

But why do you think that your desire to not have one should be forced on someone else?

Sadly I'm not surprised by this as I think that the fact that it was even under consideration was the "writing on the wall".

It's bad enough that it will happen in some states-but to think that they can/want to be able prosecute a woman for travelling to another state..

Absolutely.
Baby dealers.

Lots of money to be raked in from selling very young babies to childless couples.
''Gazumping'' has happened in the past.

Rainbowshit · 24/06/2022 16:23

i'm absolutely horrified for them. Across the world rights that we had gained are being stripped from us. terrifying. what's next?

tulips27 · 24/06/2022 16:24

Now we have to watch out for that ideology spreading over here, as has has happened previously e.g. with the anti-masking movement.

OMG12 · 24/06/2022 16:24

It’s horrific, the USA is turning into a Theocracy. Nearly 80% of Americans oppose this. They need to sort this very slippery slope out. Women should withhold sex until this is reversed. Even if you’re against abortion, the next time they put another nail in the coffin of womens rights and freedom it might just go through your hand.

PineappleWilson · 24/06/2022 16:25

I am also horrified by this change but, if you're in Belfast, your ability to access abortion isn't much easier. We need to sort out easy action to abortion for UK citizens before complaining about the actions of far right judges in the US, imo.

It's so contradictory, isn't it? How on earth do they have the audacity to bang on about the right to life as a justification of controlling what women do with their own bodies while simultaneously arguing to keep gun laws that have resulted in an average of more than one mass shooting every day this year?! It absolutely beggars belief, and I don't understand why there isn't a massive popular uprising against this shit?
