To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

Theoretically, could a woman travel to another state that does provide it? Is there any prohibition regarding this?

Didn't Trump stuff the supreme court full of fascists? Hardly surprising this is the outcome.

I know. It isn't really surprising but it's sickening nonetheless.Sad

This has nothing to do with trans issues, at all.

Its the result of a decades long strategy by the Republican Party to stack the court in its favour (generally, by appointing the youngest, most ultra conservatives justices as possible).

dreamingbohemian · 24/06/2022 15:44

Some states will definitely try to make it an illegal offense to travel out of state for an abortion (as some already have). That will likely end up as a separate legal challenge that goes up to the Court because that is blatantly unconstitutional. But a lot of women will die in the meantime.

DamnUserName21 · 24/06/2022 15:45

'Will this mean women will be arrested for travelling across state lines to have abortions?'

Yes, they can be prosecuted under some state laws

I imagine the woman will have to gain residency in the state (where the abortion is to occur) and this is a process (proof you live there, for instance) in order not to be prosecuted back in the home state.

JuneOsborne · 24/06/2022 15:45

Where are the normal men? The ones that like women, that respect women? What aren't they cross and doing what they can? Why, in this day and age, is the patriarchy still the preserve of areshole men?

Who was it that famously said something like: if you want to know what a society is like, look at how they treat their women.

Because it's so true isn't it? America is a shit society because they treat their women like shit.

I believe some states are planning to make it illegal for women to travel to another state to obtain an abortion.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/06/2022 15:46

It's absolutely shocking. I can't imagine the distress that this is going to cause American women - and the ramifications of that decision too. Unthinkable. I never thought that Roe -v- Wade would ever be overturned.

FirstFallopians · 24/06/2022 15:46

Meanwhile, child marriage is still legal in 44 US states.

A lot of women say there not against abortion , and always like to add ‘I’ve never had one ‘ or ‘not sure I could ever have one’.
why is the need to add this to your posts ?
Ive seen it so many times on mumsnet.

From my point of view I don't agree with abortion and could therefore add "but I haven't had one" etc. However, I strongly feel women should, to a point*, have the right to choose and thus wouldn't say I'm opposed per se.

  • Re the "to a point", I think that allowing to wait until 24 weeks for non medical reasons - I say this as the parent of a 24 weeker that is thriving.
Cameleongirl · 24/06/2022 15:46

@1nsertusername I’m hopeful that this won’t be the case. Where I live, people cross state lines every day going to work so I can’t see how it could be policed, tbh. How would you know why someone went to a neighboring state where abortion is legal?

Anyway, I hope where I live welcomes women from other states who need help.

I think they could legally. But I imagine it still won't be an option for a lot of women to travel and then rest/recuperate etc away from home. Particularly those in the southern clusters for whom California, New Mexico, north eastern states are too far.

abyssofwoah · 24/06/2022 15:46

Unbelievable.

lamaze1 · 24/06/2022 15:47

Meant to add that I agree todays decision is appalling.

WildOats5678 · 24/06/2022 15:48

Of all the backwards and outdated laws America has and this is the one they choose to turn over… Sickening. They care more about foetus’s and control over woman’s bodies than they do over living children getting murdered at school.

Land of the free my ass…

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 15:48

Wealthy women will able to travel for access to abortions, even those wealthy Republican women who outwardly claim to be anti-abortion. Low income women and girls will be fucked.

dreamingbohemian · 24/06/2022 15:48

Exactly @ChompChamp

The Republicans and their evangelical base have been plotting and organising this for 40 years. Patiently and methodically getting right-wing religious judges appointed all over the country and eventually finally the Supreme Court. Now they've won. Now they will try to ban same-sex marriage and allow states to make contraception illegal again.

Rubbatiti · 24/06/2022 15:49

Its truly shocking, everyone of the judges who voted to overturn roe vs wade have blood on their hands, women will resort of unsafe, back street abortions and women will die and be left with life altering injuries.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2022 15:49

It's absolutely horrific Angry

In 24 hours Scotus passes so-called ‘pro life’ anti abortion measures, and makes it easier for people to carry deadly weapons. Go figure.

John Sopel

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 15:49

It's sickening, horrific. Women and girls are going to suffer as a result. It is unnerving to see how easily a small group of men (and sadly women) can take away the rights of tens of millions of women and girls.

You are half right. Yes, there was a strategy.

You are also very, very wrong. Feminism has been divided over trans ideology and young feminists decided the battle of biological rights had been won. They could ignore all us older 'Karens' who saw the warning signs that women's hard won rights were being eroded. They are too young to have felt the consequences of female biology.

It is time for women everywhere to unite on this issue.

The contraception issue also makes me so angry, @dreamingbohemian . Surely easy access to conception =fewer unplanned pregnancies=less need for abortions.

They should be throwing free contraception at people in order to prevent unplanned pregnancies. It’s so illogical. 😡

Activists are already advising women in the US to delete period tracking apps on their phones, because these could be used as evidence of skipped periods and possible pregnancy.

I think the way the Texas law was supposed to work is that private citizens could sue a woman for trying to circumvent the law and then it would be down to the woman to prove she did not/was not seeking an abortion.

It is completely fucking totalitarian and half the country is cheering it on.
