End of school Hoodie given out too early

Woolfatthedoor · 15/05/2022 18:43

My son finishes primary school at the end of July. We have paid for special hoodies to be printed to mark this special landmark.
I was really upset to find that the PTA decided to give them out last Friday without consulting any other parents.
Obviously the kids are excited but I feel that they would have really marked the end of
Primary School if they had waited till the end of term. AIBU.

End of term is really hot, isn't it?

Thenorthwoman · 15/05/2022 18:44

You must live a charmed life if you have time to worry about something like this.

crochetmylifeaway · 15/05/2022 18:44

Our schools always give them out as early as possible and the kids are allowed to wear them as uniform. Pointless getting them otherwise as once they leave school they won't wear them.

Isitcake · 15/05/2022 18:44

Ours get them at the start of y6 so they actually get some use out of them. They won't look at them again after they start secondary.

cptartapp · 15/05/2022 18:44

They're given out early so the leavers can wear them for their last few weeks. Isn't that the point, to make them feel bonded and special. Mine never wore them after they'd left.
It's lovely to see them.
YABU.

Threetulips · 15/05/2022 18:44

Rubbish.

On the last day they wear them once and never see the light of day again.

Now means they can wear them to school. Much more cost effective and less wasteful - although I do think they are a waste of money and bad for the environment.

museumum · 15/05/2022 18:45

our p7s wear them all year. They get better use out of them. Most won’t want to wear them after they’re into secondary and will grow fast in the coming year or two.

NerrSnerr · 15/05/2022 18:45

Does it really matter when they get their hoodie? It won't make the day he leaves any less important or different to him.

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 15/05/2022 18:45

Ours got the hoodie a few weeks ago. Think about the person who organised the hoodie. Where are they storing them? Our PTA lost Easter eggs to rats in the garage. Would prefer to have them in the kids ands as soon as possnle.

Notagain76 · 15/05/2022 18:45

By end of term its hot and the kids won't get to share the excitement of wearing them withbtheir mates. Once mine started secondary they never wore the hoodies again. Let them enjoy them

ChanceNorman · 15/05/2022 18:45

Ours get them just after Xmas. Makes far more sense so they actually get to wear them.

Clymene · 15/05/2022 18:45

Honestly, this way they will get a couple of months' wear out of them. By September, you'll be putting it in the clothes recycling bin.

Horribly wasteful things.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 15/05/2022 18:45

Yabu. Usually primary schools allow the children to wear them for school, so at least they will get some use out of them.

MichelleScarn · 15/05/2022 18:46

I thought they really were to wear last term, can't imagine many kids wanting to be at a secondary school wearing something with a primary school badge on it!

theobligatorynamechange · 15/05/2022 18:46

The hoodie only means something in the context of their classmates. Wait until the last day of school, and it will only be relevant on the last day of school.

No one will want to see it/care about it when they've split from all of their classmates. Plenty of them will never see their previous classmates again come secondary. This way, they at least get some use out of the pointless piece of clothing.

Ooh I want to know about the rats in the garage

actiongirl1978 · 15/05/2022 18:46

My DD wears her leavers hoodie loads and she is in yr9 now! All of her friends are the same.

But I would much prefer for them to get them early to enjoy the friendship that comes from wearing them together.

Sally872 · 15/05/2022 18:47

Ours out early too. Kids delighted and excited for last term. Wear them to school and around the street. I imagine when they get to high school their leavers hoody won't be as "cool"

If you want to be involved in pta decision best to join and help. If you can't then be glad some people can and leave then to it.

NoSquirrels · 15/05/2022 18:47

Our Yr 6s get them as early in the year as possible too. That way school knows they’ll have some uniform that fits, they can wear it when it’s cold not in the summer term only, and it’s actually functional clothing. There’s loads of other ways they mark the end of primary school- having the hoodies early us just good sense, I think.

Freddiefox · 15/05/2022 18:49

They should wear them the whole of the last year, such a waste otherwise. Our school
give them
out in the last month, mines worn his maybe twice

Monkeytapper · 15/05/2022 18:49

My daughter wore hers a about twice when she was given it on last day of term. Didn’t get much use out if it over summer holidays, and now not wear it as she is in secondary school. Think it’s a great idea they get it earlier so they get use out if it.

artisanbread · 15/05/2022 18:50

If they gave them out on Friday presumably it was a nice treat for the end of SATs week.

comealongponds · 15/05/2022 18:53

YABU

once they’ve started secondary school they’ll quickly lose interest in their leavers hoodies. At least by having them now they might get some wear out of them. Not sure why you expected to be consulted beyond being asking if your child wants one.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/05/2022 18:53

When DDs were in a closing school, they all got them for the last term. Each class had a different colour, it was a lovely sight at the celebration events.

I think last term makes a lot of sense, especially if they do trips, residentials etc.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/05/2022 18:53

YABU. Ours got them at the end of year 6 and dd hardly wore hers. Too hot in the summer. Not cool in year 7.
