End of school Hoodie given out too early

Woolfatthedoor · 15/05/2022 18:43

My son finishes primary school at the end of July. We have paid for special hoodies to be printed to mark this special landmark.
I was really upset to find that the PTA decided to give them out last Friday without consulting any other parents.
Obviously the kids are excited but I feel that they would have really marked the end of
Primary School if they had waited till the end of term. AIBU.

It’s sensible to give them out as early as possible, so they get as much wear as possible.

they dont get much wear out of them over the summer and it’s desperately uncool to wear a primary school hoodie when you are a high school.

the P7s wear their leavers hoodies throughout their last year in primary. Makes them feel special.

I still werar my 2009 leavers on occasion....

elliejjtiny · 15/05/2022 22:51

YABU. My son has been wearing his year 11 leavers hoodie since he got it in February. My younger son wore his year 6 hoodie for the last month of year 6 and then the first few months of year 7 until he outgrew it. It's now in his memory box in the loft.

Hunderland · 15/05/2022 22:51

At primary they give them out a few weeks before so they get the pleasure of wearing them.

At secondary they are given out on their last day before exams precisely to stop them wearing them at school 😂

daisy46 · 16/05/2022 07:05

YABRidiculous

PradaOnaBudget · 16/05/2022 08:07

YABU. After the day they leave, that hoody will be hanged in the wardrobe never to be worn again. Better to get it now and at least it gets some usage

10HailMarys · 16/05/2022 10:09

Christ alive, who could possibly bring themselves to give a shit about this? It's a non-issue. It's a bloody hoodie. They're never going to wear it after they finish primary school anyway.

Cherrysherbet · 16/05/2022 10:15

My dd has had hers for months. They were allowed to wear them only on certain days, but now sats are finished, they can wear them every day. The kids see this as a privilege, and it’s part of being in year 6. All the kids names are on them too. It wouldn’t have been such a nice keepsake if she had never worn it.

I just wish I’d got two, as I’d have one to wash!

Rosebel · 16/05/2022 10:15

Surely you want your child to get to wear the hoodie.
My DD is in Y11 and got hers on Friday too. I wasn't happy and nor were most other parents as the Y11s have already started their exams (although no study leave this year so at least she will get a little bit of wear from it.)
Earlier the better otherwise its just a waste of money

I think you'd be surprised. In the secondary school where I work there has been a noticeable trend in recent years to wear your y6 leavers' hoodie to the first non-uniform day in the autumn term of y7. It's understandable when you consider the end of y6 rites of passage that both the current year 8 and 9, and some of the current year 7, have missed out on.

I always wonder how boring someone's life must be to worry about things that are as trivial as this.

Yes. It must be lovely if this nonsense is what constitutes a worry in their word...

ElCoh · 16/05/2022 10:52

You need to get a life deary 🙂

LouisCatorze · 16/05/2022 14:11

DD wears DC1's (sixth form) leaver's hoodie as a sort of status symbol. So it's still getting wear years down the line from when it was bought!

MintyIguana · 16/05/2022 14:15

As others have said, ours get them at the beginning of y6 just before their residential and wear them as uniform for the whole year. Getting them at end of year seems a waste

popandchoc · 16/05/2022 14:21

Ours were given them to wear rest of the term. I have no issue with this, gets good use out of them.

brokengoalposts · 16/05/2022 14:21

They get to wear them for the last term at school, it makes it special for them. Mine wouldn't be seen dead in their primary hoodies once they got to senior school, so at least they got some wear out of them.

FourChimneys · 16/05/2022 14:23

That seems quite late. A school near here gave them out before Easter.

balalake · 16/05/2022 14:26

Sorry to read you are so sensitive OP, please do not project this onto your children.

I'm glad to read of those who at least ensure they are worn for a reasonable length of time, as single or low use clothing is something I do not like.

savoycabbage · 16/05/2022 14:33

If you didn't buy one because you thought they wouldn't get them until the last day and then it wouldn't get worn then I can see your point.

Squillerman · 16/05/2022 14:42

YABU, it makes sense to give them out early so they can get some use out of them. If the weather is as crap where you are as it is where I am at least they’ll be able to use it right now. I don’t know why you’re annoyed about this.

Mmmmdanone · 16/05/2022 14:48

I was annoyed my ds only got his a month before the end of term. Complete waste of money. I'm sure my dd had hers after Xmas so they had it for 6 months

StuckInTheMiddleOfNowhere · 16/05/2022 14:50

My year 11 child had his leavers hoody since Oct they have the whole academic year to wear them.

LouisCatorze · 16/05/2022 15:40

I struggle to understand why your DC wouldn't wear their hoodie after they've left the school? That's the issue here rather than at what point in the year they're given them? Who dictates that you can only where a leaver's hoodie up 'til the point you leave a school? That's ridiculous and not cost-effective.

What? Nobody tells them they can't. They just don't usually because secondary school is a new era in their lives. They grow up.

PradaOnaBudget · 16/05/2022 15:55

@LouisCatorze , good luck with making any 11 year old wear a hoody that they got at the end of primary school. They will find it far too embarrassing once they join secondary school. Might wear it around the house but never outdoors

Ganymedemoon · 16/05/2022 15:57

My DDs school also got theirs on Friday at the end of their week of SATS. Makes sense to me. It's the wind drown/ transition to high school now.
