End of school Hoodie given out too early

Woolfatthedoor · 15/05/2022 18:43

My son finishes primary school at the end of July. We have paid for special hoodies to be printed to mark this special landmark.
I was really upset to find that the PTA decided to give them out last Friday without consulting any other parents.
Obviously the kids are excited but I feel that they would have really marked the end of
Primary School if they had waited till the end of term. AIBU.

We don't organise hoodies for our y6s because, by the time we are ready to message the parents about them for the summer term, there's always one parent or more that has already decided to organise it for themselves! The HT doesn't value them and agrees they are wasteful. They aren't allowed until the end of term in our school, which is far too hot usually. I'd personally happily see it traded for a leavers polo shirt or T shirt. One they could then have signed by their friends instead of a school shirt if they then wished. A lot cheaper and more wearable in the summer than a hoodie imo.

itsgettingweird · 15/05/2022 18:54

I've always known them to be handed out after SaTs week and they can wear them into school after that.

dementedpixie · 15/05/2022 18:55

Do they not get to wear them until the end of term now? Pointless getting them at the very end of term as they will likely not get worn after that

Gazelda · 15/05/2022 18:55

A lovely treat to mark end of SATS. Kids wear them as a 'privilege' for the rest of term, to make them apart from the rest of school. They can wear them to residential trip.

End of term would be pants - last day is spent writing on each others' shirts so wouldn't wear them that day. Term ends on the Weds here, so that only leaves mon and tues to wear them if they don't get them until last week. And it might well be boiling those days. So a complete waste of hoodie.

00100001 · 15/05/2022 18:56

It makes way more sense to give them out around the end if September/October half term.

Then they can actually use them when it's cold. Instead of in June/July when it's too hot for a hoodie most days.

TeenPlusCat · 15/05/2022 18:56

Last Friday would have been the day after SATs. I think handing them out then so they can wear them for the next few weeks is nice.
I'm afraid this is very much a case of 'if you want to be involved with PTA decisions then get more involved with the PTA'.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 15/05/2022 18:56

Ours got them at the beginning of the year and were allowed to wear them all year as P7s (Scotland).
This really isn't a big deal.

veronicagoldberg · 15/05/2022 18:56

This has got to be the pettiest complaint I've ever seen on here!

Phillipa12 · 15/05/2022 18:57

Our year 6 get them at the end of the September and are allowed to use them as school uniform.

thefirstmrsrochester · 15/05/2022 18:57

I have 3 dc, all of whom have now left school.

The hoodies were ‘leavers’ hoodies, not end of term/last day of term, and were distributed ahead of the exams starting.

I honestly couldn’t get annoyed about this.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/05/2022 18:57

You're really upset? Silly over-reaction imo.

TheCanyon · 15/05/2022 18:57

At our school they are given out the day before the year starts. They wear them all year.

I agree!

Our parents organise ours - they're usually given out at the end of SATs week as a treat. They then become part of the school uniform.
There are plenty of other ways the end of Year 6 is marked.

FabFitFifties · 15/05/2022 18:59

Our class are complaining they haven't got them yet, because older siblings didn't wear their's once they left. They normally have them by now.

Smartiepants79 · 15/05/2022 18:59

I do agree with you. In the 3 schools I have dealings with they wouldn’t be given out til they’re leaving and not allowed to be worn at all as there is always several kids who haven’t bought one due to cost or what ever.
Have the pta paid for everyone to have one? I hope so.

Spino · 15/05/2022 18:59

What makes you think you should be consulted about decisions the PTA make regarding the timing of handing out hoodies? Why are your feelings more important than the excitement of the children receiving their hoodies and getting a good couple of months wear out their special hoodies before the school year ends?

If you're that bothered about PTA decisions then I'd suggest joining the PTA and then you can get a say in these all important life-and-death decisions regarding hoodies. I also think you need reminding that not everything is about you. Also, get a grip.

ldontWanna · 15/05/2022 19:00

End of term can be really hot. Also most schools/children want to get the most use out of them, and sometimes it's a "treat" to celebrate the end of sats. It's a hoodie not a trophy or certificate, to be out on display somewhere gathering dust. It's meant to be worn and enjoyed.

Spaghag · 15/05/2022 19:01

My DD is in Year 6 & will be getting hers this week. There are several activities planned for the leavers & the idea is they wear the hoodies for those.

FairyCakeWings · 15/05/2022 19:01

That would have been a nice end of SATs treat for them.

Shelby2010 · 15/05/2022 19:02

Ours got them around Feb, worn to school & at weekends. I have to steal it to wash it overnight.

Mumof2bears · 15/05/2022 19:02

I've been a member of our PTA for the last 5 years, and we've always ordered and distributed our leavers' hoodies immediately after half term. Our y6s love them and with British weather, are quite happy to wear them during the changeable weather at the end of term, or if they're out in the early evening. Most of them order a size or two up so that they can continue wearing them outside school in y7 and y8. It's understandable as a hoodie is a lot more comfy and 'cool' than many secondary schools' uniform! Plus almost all the kids in our village went to the same village primary school, so it's a nice that they still feel that sign of ongoing community and togetherness during their first couple of years of secondary.
I see other prinary school hoodies being worn around the village by kid of similar age too, so we're not the only ones. It does sound like there are variations across the country though. Maybe there's a difference between pupils at village primaries and those in towns with several primary schools?

SnowyPetals · 15/05/2022 19:04

Our school always gives them out in time for them to be worn on the Y6 residential just after SATs. That's the bonding experience they wear them on. Also agree with PP that with PTA stuff it's a case of either get involved with helping organise, or accept how these volunteer parents do things that your child gets to enjoy.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 15/05/2022 19:05

Parents organise at dd's school. If we'd got organised in time last Friday would have been perfect so they could have had them as a treat after SATS & for residential and rest of term.

I noticed my DDs school the leavers we’re wearing their hoodies last week. We are new to the school so wasn’t aware of how the school do things. I was told they were given out months ago for the kids to wear them through winter, I think it’s a great idea.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 15/05/2022 19:05

We’ve had ours since March! I think it’s lovely as the kids have enjoyed wearing them in school and on school trips.
