End of school Hoodie given out too early

Woolfatthedoor · 15/05/2022 18:43

My son finishes primary school at the end of July. We have paid for special hoodies to be printed to mark this special landmark.
I was really upset to find that the PTA decided to give them out last Friday without consulting any other parents.
Obviously the kids are excited but I feel that they would have really marked the end of
Primary School if they had waited till the end of term. AIBU.

A lot of this upset is misplaced (parents worried about something that really their DC would not think twice about). Life would be a lot simpler if parents stopped putting themselves into their DC's shoes when it's not necessary.

We do not live in a perfect world. And what's the right time for some people most likely wouldn't be for others.

And yes, if the PTA woman who gave her time free-of-charge for the benefit of the school and its pupils, had to store the leaver hoodies, why shouldn't she pass them onto the DC at a time that suits her (unless you'd like to pay her a storage fee).

There are some people in this world who seem to have no thought for others at all.

They are excited to wear them. My y7 son is furious that current y6 go theirs earlier than him!

My son wore his for his final half term as part of his uniform. It was really special, though he did lose it 4 times in those final weeks 🙄

Moonflower12 · 15/05/2022 21:10

They get given out at my school at the end of last week, so they can be worn on trips and the residential.
The same at my DDs school.

Rockbird · 15/05/2022 21:17

My DDs' school gives them out in January. I gave them out at my school on Friday as a post-SATs treat. I organise the damn things from start to finish and if you knew what a shitload of hassle they were to sort out you wouldn't complain about timing! And we didn't charge for them.

Morph22010 · 15/05/2022 21:17

The people that organised this are volunteers doing it in their own time, how about a thanks or maybe volunteering if you think you can do better

Complete waste of money...

LaLaLouella · 15/05/2022 21:39

My Y6 class got them after Feb half term and have worn them every school day since. It helps unite them as a little group and identifies them out as 'oldest' in the school. Not a waste of money - the kids all love them.

I am extremely grateful to the PTFA volunteers who sort it all out!

I sometimes wear Dd's, it's warm and comfy and ideal for mooching about.
It's 9 years old and still going strong.

Mine have all loved their leavers hoodies and wore them for many years. I think they feel secure in it.

it’s a great idea to give them out early OP!

melj1213 · 15/05/2022 21:52

When DD was in yr6 they got their leavers hoodie on the first day back in January after the Christmas holidays and were allowed to wear them instead of jumpers for the rest of the school year. Dd loved it, it singled them out as the oldest in the school and bonded them all together as a group. It also meant that they all had them for their residential (Easter) and any inter-school events and they all loved showing them off to everyone.

I think the earlier the better when it comes to receiving them. DD got 2/3rds of a school years worth of practically daily wear out of it because they got it in January when it was still cold and so actually wore them. Where we are it is just starting to get properly warm so hoodies wouldn't get as much wear if handed out later in the year and if it was only given on the last day of term then it would be worn for literally one day as it would be too hot to wear regularly over the summer and potentially unworn when moving to secondary.

What a total waste of money and something else to put pressure on those who may be least able to afford it.

At DDs primary no parents had to pay for the hoodie, every year they are paid for and organised entirely by the PTA.

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 15/05/2022 22:05

They give them early so they can wear them!

A friend of mine's kid isn't getting them because the school said because a couple can't afford it they've vetoed it. Be thankful.

This school of thought is what causes problems.

What if 23 children want one and can afford it but people like you decide the above? Who wins out?

Smartiepants79 · 15/05/2022 22:27

If the PTA at my Dds school paid for all the leavers to have a hoodie it would cost them 2 and a half thousand pounds!!
We’ve always had to pay for them ourselves.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 15/05/2022 22:30

We paid for ours but the school did say to go to them if there was an issue with the cost so assume some people had help or paid in instalments

How many kids are in a class and how much are the hoodies??

SweetSakura · 15/05/2022 22:38

Yanbu. I am sure their lives are damaged irreparably. Sending thoughts and prayers.

Crikey - what an absolutely bonkers thing to complain about

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/05/2022 22:43

Our year 6s were given theirs last Friday to mark the end of Sat's and to wear on their celebration trip. I thought I was lovely seeing them in them.
They're now, like many others have said, part of their school uniform until the end of term.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/05/2022 22:43

Ours get the after the Christmas break in Y6 so they can wear them all the school year.

cptartapp · 15/05/2022 18:44

They're given out early so the leavers can wear them for their last few weeks. Isn't that the point, to make them feel bonded and special. Mine never wore them after they'd left.
It's lovely to see them.
YABU.

Yes this. If you get them on the last day of term you don't wear them and it's a waste of money

TrashyPanda · 15/05/2022 22:43

It’s sensible to give them out as early as possible, so they get as much wear as possible.

they dont get much wear out of them over the summer and it’s desperately uncool to wear a primary school hoodie when you are a high school.

the P7s wear their leavers hoodies throughout their last year in primary. Makes them feel special.
