End of school Hoodie given out too early

Woolfatthedoor · 15/05/2022 18:43

My son finishes primary school at the end of July. We have paid for special hoodies to be printed to mark this special landmark.
I was really upset to find that the PTA decided to give them out last Friday without consulting any other parents.
Obviously the kids are excited but I feel that they would have really marked the end of
Primary School if they had waited till the end of term. AIBU.

YABU ours were supposed to get them after Easter so they could wear them in school this term and I'm (mildly) annoyed that they're a bit late. They won't want to wear them much once they've left.

astoundedgoat · 16/05/2022 16:01

We got ours on Thursday to celebrate the end of the SATS and the kids were thrilled. This way they get to show them off (to each other, I guess?) for the rest of term. Much better timing than waiting, IMO.

Well it really begs the question whether it's the right type of leaving momento for Yr 6s then!

Are you telling me that Year 6s are going to be more 'sniffy' about wearing last year's hoody than Yr 11s or 13s? I think not somehow?

My DD hasn't yet ordered her Yr 11 one (but will be able to shortly), and chances are that it won't be available to pick up until they finish their GCSEs. Not heard any of the girls complaining that the moment has passed in which to wear them!?

And there's nothing wrong with wearing them as loungewear rather than to go out in, surely?

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let landmark hoodies circle overhead
Scribbling on the torso the message from this thread
School is not yet out, yet tragedy unfolds -
A hoodie come too soon is far too bold.

Term end was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought the hoodie was for term end: I was wrong.

Year elevens are not years sixes @LouisCatorze.

TeenPlusCat · 16/05/2022 16:12

Kids seem to be happy to show off which secondary school they went to when they are in college, but are less happy to wear a primary school item when in secondary.
I expect it is something to do with wanting to not look babyish at 11/12 v being more happy in their own skin at 16/17.

LouisCatorze · 16/05/2022 16:12

I know Year 11s are not Yr 6s but really if Year 11s will be seen out in something as 'old-hat' as a leaver's hoodie why won't Yr 6s? You cannot get more fussy and specific about what they wear than 14/15/16 year old girls, seriously! 10/11 year olds have nothing on them, believe me.

And maybe they're not the perfect momento for that age group if they are going to be so prescriptive about when and where they'll wear them.

LouisCatorze · 16/05/2022 16:14

Well then it's just not a good fit momento for Year 6s – end of!

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 16/05/2022 18:16

YUBU. Our school gave them out before Christmas I think, can wear every day. What’s the point else?

WotsitsMadeIn1927 · 16/05/2022 18:16

My son got his 3 days before the term ended, and it was boiling. At least they can make the most of wearing them.

Thedogshouses · 16/05/2022 18:29

12
% UR 😀who are they?

Rainbowshit · 16/05/2022 18:30

YABU, giving them out early means they get more wear out of them. It's sensible and absolutely the norm.

SheSellSeaShells · 16/05/2022 18:32

My son got his in December (school organised it not the PTA and we had them delivered to our home addresses) He wears it on all his PE days, as do all the other year 6's who got them, and they're all planning on taking on the residential trip too. I'm happy he got it in December and has lots of wear from it - I expect it would have been wasted in July

LubaLuca · 16/05/2022 18:33

Much more sensible to get them wearing them now.

autumnboys · 16/05/2022 18:33

Ours got them for their residential, the week after SATS. They were allowed to wear them to school from then on. Can’t see the problem? They were all so excited the day they peeped in the classroom & could see them on their desks.

SunshineCake · 16/05/2022 19:06

My two are 21 and 18 and they got theirs at the end of year 13 and they wear theirs a fair bit. They didn't get one at the end of year six so I would say kids do wear them again.

VerbenaGirl · 16/05/2022 19:07

Do they have a school trip coming up? My DCs got theirs just after SATS to wear on their Year 6 residential.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 16/05/2022 19:38

My dd still wears hers in y9 too!

PeachyPeachTrees · 16/05/2022 19:40

My Y6 boy got his around this time last year and I would have like earlier tbh as it gets too hot to wear them by end of summer term.

Supergirl1958 · 16/05/2022 19:43

Did it not mark the end of sats? I think this is fine! Need to enjoy wearing them, otherwise what’s the point 🤷‍♀️

BusySittingDown · 16/05/2022 19:45

I personally wished that they would get them in at the beginning of the year and be allowed to wear them in school. DD1 got hers at the end of school, wore it on the last day of year 6 and that was it!

DD2 leaves this time and I've ordered her hoody - I don't know when they will get it but again, she'll probably wear it on the last day into school and then it will be shoved at the back of the wardrobe. For £22 it seems such a waste! If they got them earlier then they could wear them throughout the year as the "Year 6 Leavers". I wouldn't have bothered getting one but I know that everyone else will have one and I don't want her to be left out.

mamaduckbone · 16/05/2022 19:56

My son was given his on the last day of year 6 and wore it precisely once. At least this way they'll get some wear out of them.

WTAFhappened123 · 16/05/2022 19:59

An item of clothing that will never be worn after this years school holidays. I would rather my sun had got his early because he would have at least worn it for longer than 6 weeks - it’s now in his ‘memories’ box in loft!!

Scottsy100 · 16/05/2022 20:55

It gives the children a chance to wear them for a period of time so yeah you are being pretty unreasonable

Ifeelsuchafool · 16/05/2022 21:04

Mine wore theirs afterwards. DD2 still wears hers around the house in winter, sometimes to sleep in (draughty old house) and she's been through senior school and uni! 😂
