End of school Hoodie given out too early

Woolfatthedoor · 15/05/2022 18:43

My son finishes primary school at the end of July. We have paid for special hoodies to be printed to mark this special landmark.
I was really upset to find that the PTA decided to give them out last Friday without consulting any other parents.
Obviously the kids are excited but I feel that they would have really marked the end of
Primary School if they had waited till the end of term. AIBU.

Ours were given their's in February........

lljkk · 15/05/2022 20:09

I agree they should be given out as early in yr as possible. They usually get worn hardly at all.

I routinely wear any of 3 school-leaver (GCSE) hoodies that DC have cast off by end July of the year they finished. I am currently buttering up DC-in-yr9 to tell him which colour I'd like to have next time :).

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 15/05/2022 20:09

Ours went out 3 weeks ago so they could wear them on their residential. They are also allowed to wear them at school.

Basilsage · 15/05/2022 20:12

I'm with OP. I can see why what was done gets done but those organising could have made it clear to those who don't work at this or other schools or have not had other children of their own, family, go through this. The hoodie may have been seen as a sending off token?

MrsToothyBitch · 15/05/2022 20:12

I think the schools that do them early and allow them throughout yr 6 get it right actually. I'd rather these were given out at October half term say, and the children got the wear out of them.

I did rewear my VI leavers hoodie- but I'd reached adult size so didn't out grow it, was off to uni so it was nice and easy to chuck on and it was the noughties so hoodies were very on trend! Wore it to death.

RampantIvy · 15/05/2022 20:16

The hoodie may have been seen as a sending off token?

But then it never gets worn.

actiongirl1978 · 15/05/2022 18:46

My DD wears her leavers hoodie loads and she is in yr9 now! All of her friends are the same.

But I would much prefer for them to get them early to enjoy the friendship that comes from wearing them together.

Agreed both my children wore their primary leavers hoodies for ages - even if was just at home.

My eldest did A levels last year and his year 13 leavers hoodie is his go to lounge wear with PJ’s!

Bellie710 · 15/05/2022 20:18

Our school give them out at the start of the final year, they then get to wear them the last Friday of every month which they love as everyone else is in uniform. they will never wear it again when they start secondary!

kitcat15 · 15/05/2022 20:18

They will never be worn once they leave school…very uncool look for a year 7….probably won’t even get worn much as a year 6….none of mine would ever have worn one

sickofthisnonsense · 15/05/2022 20:21

Surely most people want to get some wear out of something they have paid £20odd for!

YABU.

Some schools do them for the start of yr6 and the kids wear them all year.
Others have them ready for after SAT and the residential trips etc.

DickeryDock · 15/05/2022 20:23

Kids love wearing them to school as much as possible. The year my child was given them at the end of term was a waste as they didn’t wear them all summer then in September it wasn’t ‘cool’ to wear the hoodie from the previous school

MargosKaftan · 15/05/2022 20:25

My dc1 is in year 7. They are normally given out earlier here so they can wear them for the year 6 residential and then are allowed to wear instead of school jumper for the last term.

Re not getting much wear out of them- here it's really common to see year 7 kids wearing their jumper from the year before. Most only stop when they cant fit in it anymore.

FlickyCrumble · 15/05/2022 20:25

I think they’re given out early so that a PTA mum doesn’t have to store them in her house for a minute longer than necessary.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 15/05/2022 20:26

Ours is a three tier school system so the year fours have been wearing theirs since the Christmas disco.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 15/05/2022 20:38

We've had ours since October. They wear them every day

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 15/05/2022 20:41

And I bought 3, haven't had to buy a normal school jumper all year

Join the pta and do all the shit admin if it means that much to you. You should be bloody grateful someone (for free in their own time) sorted this in the first place . 🙄🙄

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 15/05/2022 20:43

What a total waste of money and something else to put pressure on those who may be least able to afford it.

whataloadabullocks · 15/05/2022 20:45

I can understand why you're upset op, I assume you paid for the hoody and expected it to be the leaving gift for your child.
I'm guessing you're upset as what you expected and what happened were mismatched and had the PTA informed you, you would have either declined buying the hoody, or requested the hoody was given to you to give to your child at the end of term. So no doubt you feel disappointed and I think that's fine; but put a positive spin on it at least it will get plenty of wear!
Dc still wears the leavers hoody, not out and about but as lounge wear so it's had plenty of use.

ButtonMoonLoon · 15/05/2022 20:49

What a ridiculous thing to moan about!
Firstly, I’m sure the school probably decides the timing of it, not the PTA
Our Year 6 children had theirs given out in the last week of term before Christmas so that they could start wearing them in January. That way they get the most wear out of them and it is actually really lovely for them to wear a different uniform to the rest of the school and feel grown up in their last few terms. Their teachers wear them too, and then they get to get them signed if they want in their last week in July.

MsTSwift · 15/05/2022 20:50

The pta are volunteers not there to pander to the whims of the “customers”. Not enough 🙄 in the world for this whiner.

MsTSwift · 15/05/2022 20:52

Like the knob that complained that Dh wasn’t cooking his burger fast enough at the pta bbq. God so glad primary school years are over - special place in hell for those that moan about voluntary stuff done by others when they themselves don’t lift a finger!

Einszwei · 15/05/2022 20:58

I always wonder how boring someone's life must be to worry about things that are as trivial as this.

whynotwhatknot · 15/05/2022 21:00

hoodies?

i think we got a leaving disco i cant even recall much
