3 adults plus DS at WE.Had reasonable amount for us ,and the week ahead .An old chap smiled behind me ,I smiled back .He then commented re amount saying " You dont have to buy the whole shop you know ,leave something for the rest of us!" I muttered a comment and felt annoyed and embarrassed .Had just general meals for Dinners, plus Bread ,sandwich fillings etc plus Loo rolls ,washing liquid and so on .No Alcohol or huge joints of Beef!

I think it was a joke!

ancientgran · 15/05/2022 11:47

He just wanted to say something, maybe he's lonely. I wouldn't worry about it.

BruceAndNosh · 15/05/2022 11:47

It's small talk.
Smile and ignore

Prinnny · 15/05/2022 11:47

Sounds like he was just being friendly and making conversation. Be like Elsa, let it go, wasn’t rude at all.

OuiWeeOui · 15/05/2022 11:47

He was just making conversation. Most people wouldn’t give it a second thought

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/05/2022 11:48

It was a passing jokey comment. Deep breath, relax.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 15/05/2022 11:49

It was a bad attempt at a pleasantry. Perhaps he's on his own and never buys more than a few things at once, and wishes he had a big family to buy for.

CandyApplePie · 15/05/2022 11:49

Are you always so sensitive?

PaddleBoardingMomma · 15/05/2022 11:49

I'd have to be having a really REALLY bad day to find this anything other than an old chap having a bit of a joke. It's as if everyone being locked up for 2 years has wiped peoples memory on how to exchange simple interactions with people.

VeryTrying22 · 15/05/2022 11:50

Goodness me, it’s a bloody lighthearted comment, small talk, a joke even.

lighten up and get a grip

Blowyourowntrumpet · 15/05/2022 11:51

I'd assume he was a lonely old man who just wanted a bit of human interaction. Are you always this sensitive?

Lizziekisss · 15/05/2022 11:52

Just small talk. Doubt offence was meant, did he strike a nerve over something?

NoSquirrels · 15/05/2022 11:52

He wasn’t judging you.

starfishmummy · 15/05/2022 11:52

If he had started going on about how healthy or unhealthy your choices were, then that would have been something to grumble about. But this was clearly meant in a light hearted way.

lickenchugget · 15/05/2022 11:52

Gosh, you sound fun, OP.

the80sweregreat · 15/05/2022 11:54

I'd laugh at that! It's Just a joke.

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 15/05/2022 11:55

Old people, especially those living alone, sometimes forget what a full weekly shop looks like.

I'm generalizing but older people tend to eat less, fewer meals, snacks, smaller portions.

It maybe looked like a very large shop to him, and he tried to make a jokey comment about it just to have an interaction. He didnt do anything wrong.

superplumb · 15/05/2022 11:56

You need to calm down and not be so sensitive. Poor old bloke only trying to speak to someone

erikbloodaxe · 15/05/2022 11:57

I get this every week. I'm shopping for 4 adults. Biggest trolley full to the top. Compared to someone buying very little it does look like I'm buying a lot. It's really not a personal insult or rude just someone, possibly a bit lonely, making chit chat.

This.

movemyshed · 15/05/2022 11:59

Yet another OP who prefers to take offence at someone passing a jokey or conversational remark, rather than show any empathy for those who may have no-one to talk to and just want some human contact.

LucieLemon · 15/05/2022 12:00

He has no idea how many people you are shopping for so really was just small talk. Nothing offensive there.

Beautiful3 · 15/05/2022 12:00

Honestly, I think it was his attempt at making small talk, a joke.

NoSquirrels · 15/05/2022 12:01

You can avoid these situations by offering to let the person behind you with a small shop nip in front of you in the queue. It’ll usually take you longer to unload onto the conveyor belt than it will for them to put their whole shop through and pay, so won-win for everyone.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 15/05/2022 12:02

Blimey, why so sensitive?

He was just making small-talk.
