3 adults plus DS at WE.Had reasonable amount for us ,and the week ahead .An old chap smiled behind me ,I smiled back .He then commented re amount saying " You dont have to buy the whole shop you know ,leave something for the rest of us!" I muttered a comment and felt annoyed and embarrassed .Had just general meals for Dinners, plus Bread ,sandwich fillings etc plus Loo rolls ,washing liquid and so on .No Alcohol or huge joints of Beef!

No, it's not "literally" what Mumsnet's for. Most people don't feel the need to post every piece of tedious drivel that passes through their flaming head.

Lol

Why are you so upset about this? Just let it go and move on. Do the same as everyone else is telling the OP to do.

Johnnysgirl · 15/05/2022 14:21

Oh, nice, op! Shout out to the one! poster who agreed with you 😂

To the entire 25% of them you mean.

FleurDeLizz · 15/05/2022 14:25

thats not negging. Can’t you just move on with your day?

ItsLisaLou · 15/05/2022 14:25

OP is your phone glitching or something what’s with the disturbing punctuation?

(Also yes YABU)

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/05/2022 14:25

The point is he was sarky and rude.

And yet your OP said:
"An old chap smiled behind me ,I smiled back .He then commented..."

We're not mind-readers.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/05/2022 14:27

Negging? Jesus, those fellas have really diversified their script.

dottiedodah · 15/05/2022 14:27

Haha! "Let it go and move on" sez the poster taking up 90% of the thread 😁😁😁

mouse70 · 15/05/2022 14:31

A few times I have had comments about contents of my trolley because I had basic but lots of, baking ingredients. Never has this been anymore than a passing friendly comment on how much I look like planning to bake and how busy I will be so think you are being too sensitive to a passing random person making any comment about the contents of your trolley.

Nope, didn't think you could. Oh well I will do you a favour and bow out of your posts from now as clearly you dont agree with me. Good luck and goodbye.

peachescariad · 15/05/2022 14:32

Jeez some people...he wasn't rude he was just making small talk...how do you actually get through life if you're so easily offended...

lemongreentea · 15/05/2022 14:35

The first poster piles on and then the rest pile on because they can.

You are not being unreasonable and mumsnet is funny sometimes, in another thread posters are saying you dont ever have to open your front door to anyone yet here you aee required to smile and nod and a randoms mans rude comments.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/05/2022 14:38

There's a good chance that these are different posters. I certainly don't stop, drop and roll when the door bell goes and I happily chat to randoms who have comments that might be considered offensive if you are determined to look for offence. I think I'm the normal one but don't we all?

mcmooberry · 15/05/2022 14:45

I understand why you found it rude, his implication (whether he meant it or not) was that your shopping was excessive and selfish, thus depriving other shoppers of the opportunity of obtaining certain items. Which you weren't as it sounds like you weren't stockpiling just buying your weekly shop in one go.

And they are getting a lot older!

dottiedodah · 15/05/2022 14:47

Lemongreentea Thank you .In RL most people I know think I never stop talking! Funny how these threads can be so different as you say .Its not a massive problem .However becomes irksome when unknown men tend to make random unwanted comments . I certainly am not over sensitive ,its all in the tone .He started off friendly, then almost as an afterthought pitched in with this unwanted comment!

Dailyfailcanfeckoff · 15/05/2022 14:50

It says a lot that he hasn’t had to shop for a number of people I think.
a woman of similar age is more likely to commiserate over all the cooking to be done- have had quite a few of those conversations at the till.

dottiedodah · 15/05/2022 14:51

mcmooberry Yes thank you .This was the implication I felt .He had started off just smiling and saying Im following you .I smiled back .Then I felt he disapproved of my trolley .Just buying for the week no goodies as such! If 4 people all shopped for themselves would be the same amount in total but look a lot less!

Hopefully you wont see him again but if you do ask him if he's lonely, I assume all the YABUers on this thread would be happy and willing to chitchat with him.

So is it only when men do it it is a problem.
I'm seriously not being snarky because where I live what he has said is pretty normal and women comment also. Hell, even the cashiers comment as well. I'm not making out like it's one long comedy sketch or owt, just small social interactions where everyone is rubbing along ok.

Johnnysgirl · 15/05/2022 15:06

It's not remotely to your credit that you sound like a petulant 8 year old, *lemongreentea".
But crack on, you clearly don't mind.
