3 adults plus DS at WE.Had reasonable amount for us ,and the week ahead .An old chap smiled behind me ,I smiled back .He then commented re amount saying " You dont have to buy the whole shop you know ,leave something for the rest of us!" I muttered a comment and felt annoyed and embarrassed .Had just general meals for Dinners, plus Bread ,sandwich fillings etc plus Loo rolls ,washing liquid and so on .No Alcohol or huge joints of Beef!

I had similar a few weeks ago. There are 5 adults and a child living in my house at the moment. The man was being rude. He was making loads of "oh wow, oh wow oh wow look at all that shopping. Wow wow wow" comments to no-one in particular. then nudged the woman beind him to point and comment "look at all that food she's got" Then asked me if we didn't have taps because I'd bought 3 bottles of 17p fizzy water, queried why I needed 3 tins of beans, why I bought 4 different boxes of cereal, queried almost everything I'd bought more than one pack of. I did ask if he wanted to take his basket in front of me but he wouldn't. He just wanted to comment on my weekly shopping.

Some people might comment, that something I've bought looks nice, or where did I find that in the shop. I don't mind that, but this was totally unneccessary.

His comments were unnecessary but according to this thread you should have just laughed it off because he was lonely.

How about all those posters who and spend time with these lonely people so the rest of us can be left alone to shop in peace.

He may have been making small talk but I wonder how often that leads to a longer chat and interesting interaction for him if that's his approach.

NAMALT but there is a tiresome number of people who only want to make negging remarks and would be very gratified that so many women here are criticising another woman who had a flash of irritation at the remark.

I have no idea what your second paragraph means. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Johnnysgirl · 15/05/2022 14:07

There was nothing "negging" about this particular remark, Embarrassing...

As expected

OP - AIBU

90% of posters - uh yeah

OP - finds one person as thin skinned as themselves and that’s case closed

It's 74% v 26%

I bet the 76% are all really annoying people who babble on and on to random people without mercy! Lol

lemongreentea · 15/05/2022 14:08

75% - 25% now

FourTeaFallOut · 15/05/2022 14:09

I had a woman I let ahead of me in the queue ahead as she only had a basket and I had a shopping load who commented on the volume of stuff in my trolley. I wasn't offended I just said, yes, it might keep us going till Thursday if I can keep the gannets in check. I really don't understand the mental gymnastics you've done to turn it into an insult.

wonkygorgeous · 15/05/2022 14:09

My dad was autistic but loved trying to connect with people.

It's exactly what he would have said.

It's meant kindly, in a clumsy way.

A lot of people do actually chat and make friendly passing comments to each other in a supermarket. Not saying its like a social club or anything but just friendly social interactions.

midsomermurderess · 15/05/2022 14:11

I can’t believe the fragility of some people here that leads to 6-page threads, just because some old fellow made a quip in a shop. First reaction, to run, breathlessly to Mumsnet to deliver how so very offended you were.

wonkygorgeous he sounds pleasant.

Bednobsbroomsticks · 15/05/2022 14:14

Try shopping for some resilience. It's in the third aisle up next to the lemongreentea

2bazookas · 15/05/2022 14:14

It was a joke. Get over yourself.

midsomermurderess · 15/05/2022 14:15

And why is a wee bit chat in a shop ‘babbling on and on’? There is so munch social dysfunction on display on Mumsnet, presented with such moral superiority.

Nice to know Im not the only one! Im not usually sensitive ,but just lots of comments lately for some reason . I shall try to laugh it off in future !

I think a lot of people have cut down on what they normally buy, so people are a bit more aware of what they , and total strangers, are putting in their trollies. It’s not personal, it’s just a reaction to belt tightening and general anxiety over rising prices/ food shortages/ Covid shopping etc etc etc .

This is probably some truth to this.

For the umpteenth time .I like a laugh and joke with old people ,young people, anyone really who isnt nosey enough to comment on my shopping .For those who think I made a thread out of nothing ,someone has set up a thread on a lack of egg mayo for lunch! The point is he was sarky and rude .Dressed up as a "joke" Im not sobbing or losing sleep .Just a bit pissed off as its not the first time! Lemongreentea Thank you for "getting "me and being supportive .Everyone else just stop piling on .Its not "small talk" just general negging and putting down .Theres a big difference in tone !

Out of interest which supermarket were you shopping at?

No, it's not "literally" what Mumsnet's for. Most people don't feel the need to post every piece of tedious drivel that passes through their flaming head.

Johnnysgirl · 15/05/2022 14:21

Oh, nice, op! Shout out to the one! poster who agreed with you 😂
