3 adults plus DS at WE.Had reasonable amount for us ,and the week ahead .An old chap smiled behind me ,I smiled back .He then commented re amount saying " You dont have to buy the whole shop you know ,leave something for the rest of us!" I muttered a comment and felt annoyed and embarrassed .Had just general meals for Dinners, plus Bread ,sandwich fillings etc plus Loo rolls ,washing liquid and so on .No Alcohol or huge joints of Beef!

Lemongreentea Thank you! I like chit chat as much as the next person .Just felt the comment was uncalled for .Some posters seem to deliberately misunderstand me . I would not make comments about other Shoppers . Just seems to usually be men,! (often older who do this) good to know someone gets me!

Lemongreentea, I think your approach is the more modern one so I think you are "winning"!

Doesn't really matter what you think tbh.

Bednobsbroomsticks · 15/05/2022 13:40

This thread is ridiculous. If he's noticed sanitary towels in ur basket and asked if you were on the blob I could understand the horror. Some 84 year old man stopped to talk to me in a car park last week. Chatted to him for half an hour. Clearly he didn't get a chance to chat v often. What kind of world are we living in when people can't have a laugh and a joke with each other . This has to be a wind up.

Like I said OP, its probably because they make these kind of inane comments to random strangers and think its acceptable.

They were all gaslighting you by piling on.

As expected

OP - AIBU

90% of posters - uh yeah

OP - finds one person as thin skinned as themselves and that’s case closed

notacooldad · 15/05/2022 13:41

You are annoyed at that!
🤣🤣🤣🤣

seems we have another word you don’t understand…

lemongreentea · 15/05/2022 13:42

For all the postees saying she should just ignore the comments about her shopping trolley, why dont you take your own advise and ignore the comments on this thread you dont agree with or like?

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

Big thumbs up for the use of articulate and cement in your sentence. You are so clever.

Serious question. Articulate and cement can't be used like this?

WakeWaterWalk · 15/05/2022 13:44

😂 funny thread.

The difference is, OP didn't start it. If the random man hadnt commented and gone about his business she wouldnt have thought twice about making a post about it.

Because it's a discussion. People have opinions. That's the whole point of MN. 🤷‍♀️

Ask the English language professors on this thread who keep commenting on my writing. We all might learn something.

Eh? 😂
Yeah, most of don't bother making posts about things that haven't actually happened. What your actual point is is anybody's guess. Do you even know?

Nah just someone who enjoys knowing what words mean before using them, it would be great if you did the same.

You’ve wrongly claimed this persons joke is ‘passive aggressive’ and refused to reply to a poster asking ‘how’ (which is code for, I don’t know and want to ignore the issue) now people simply disagreeing with the OP and telling her she is thin skinned is ‘gaslighting’ - you seem to have 0 understanding at how using gaslighting especially so flippantly minimises actual gaslighting which is abusive and something that many on this site have to unfortunately navigate irl.

Exactly my point. OP made a thead and was told she shouldnt have made it as other posters wouldnt have been bothered by random mans sbopping trolley comment and to just ignore him.

Thank you for your input. I probably won't take it on board but thanks for taking the time to write it out for me.

Sorry but I don't get the point you are trying to make. What do you mean?

MrsElgan · 15/05/2022 13:55

I had similar a few weeks ago. There are 5 adults and a child living in my house at the moment. The man was being rude. He was making loads of "oh wow, oh wow oh wow look at all that shopping. Wow wow wow" comments to no-one in particular. then nudged the woman beind him to point and comment "look at all that food she's got" Then asked me if we didn't have taps because I'd bought 3 bottles of 17p fizzy water, queried why I needed 3 tins of beans, why I bought 4 different boxes of cereal, queried almost everything I'd bought more than one pack of. I did ask if he wanted to take his basket in front of me but he wouldn't. He just wanted to comment on my weekly shopping.

Some people might comment, that something I've bought looks nice, or where did I find that in the shop. I don't mind that, but this was totally unneccessary.

notacooldad · 15/05/2022 13:55

Mn is weird.
I wouldn't have given tbe comment any headspace once I'd walked away.
I am amazed though at what people get upset and annoyed at. Personal if some said that to me I would have joked something back maybe ' I know!!! It's costing me a fortune every time i clear out Aldi!!
However where I live it seems nearly everyone chats and comments at tbe till and it's all good natured.

lop32 · 15/05/2022 13:59

I also do one big shop for four of us rather than little top ups and feel self conscious when my trolley is full. Worse still, I hosted my son's rugby team one week and had an overflowing trolley of meat and other items. I felt I was being scrutinised so decided to explain to various random shoppers in Tesco. Not sure why I did that though .. I understood the slight disapproval in the early pandemic madness when people were stockpiling loo roll and pasta. But the thought that you're depriving the other shoppers by doing a weekly shop is irrational.

lemongreentea · 15/05/2022 14:01

But why is it so shocking or surprising that people get upset, annoyed or irritated by different things?

BrioNotBiro · 15/05/2022 14:01

Aww, poor old chap who was just trying to be pleasant with a conversational opener. I find that and the OP's reaction really sad. It's horrible the way society is going with any tentative social interaction from a stranger viewed with suspicion or offence.
