Is this racist?

Okay.... so my ex was over at my house tonight to see our kids (he often does this).

Eldest DC was brushing their teeth whilst the same time trying to ask my ex a question.

Because you couldn't make out the words DC was saying with the toothbrush in their mouth, ex then proceeds to imitate the 'sound' saying something like "wah sah wah ha insert random sound here Are you Chinese or something?"

I've just had my arse handed to me by my ex for pointing out it was casually racist and could he not say things like that.

He has kicked up a massive stink which involved shouting, swearing, in which I asked him to leave. Still, the kids overheard him as he was being deliberately loud in shouting at me.

I'm sat here confused as hell.

All the best op,

DaisyStPatience · 03/05/2022 21:54

Eh, I couldn't get upset about it.

ToastedWaffle · 03/05/2022 21:55

Saying "Are you Chinese?" - you wouldn't find that racist?

frostytimes · 03/05/2022 21:58

I also couldn't get upset about that.
Him loudly shouting and swearing at you though! Glad he's an ex

RJnomore1 · 03/05/2022 21:59

Yes it’s racist. And his behaviour when you pointed it out is appalling.

Discovereads · 03/05/2022 22:00

That’s not something that would cause me to call my partner a racist over.
Why were you picking a fight?

NippyWoowoo · 03/05/2022 22:00

It's incredibly immature in addition to racist. The connotation is that the language of a minority group is just garbled nonsense.

Your child follows by example, imagine him doing that so a child on the playground.

powershowerforanhour · 03/05/2022 22:00

Yes it is. On about the Father Ted level... although Ted was mortified in the end. Dougal's reaction was about right.

One of those "yup, ex for a reason" moments.

ToastedWaffle · 03/05/2022 22:00

I just hate racism. My youngest DCs best friend is mixed race with a chinese mum. I would hate my youngest to say something like this to his best friend all because his dad thinks it's acceptable.

No one likes it apart from scum like your ex

Indicatrice · 03/05/2022 22:02

Yes, it was deeply racist, OP. Ignore the racist apologists here, there are many unfortunately Sad

Please don’t let him in to your home again.

Because I take a dim view of racism and rather than picking a fight, i pointed out it was casual racism. Ex couldn't understand why.

Er ..cos she doesn't want her kids to grow up pulling the corners of their eyes up with their fingers and sticking their front teeth out and thinking it's ok and just bantz???

Chinam · 03/05/2022 22:05

I agree it’s racist. Your ex is a moron. You are well rid.

latetothefisting · 03/05/2022 22:05

shocked that posters don't think it's racist, but agree the shouting and kicking off is as disturbing. Good for you that he's an ex.
Are the kids still young or old enough that you can start looking at more formal custody arrangements, as him popping round to see them in your house probably isn't ideal forever?

ToastedWaffle · 03/05/2022 22:06

They are primary aged kids.

Why did your son ask a question while brushing his teeth? It's really rude just like someone talking with their mouth full. Your ex was nasty, but your son was wrong for doing that.

😂😂😂

'Yeah it was racist, but your child deserved it'

AffronttoBS · 03/05/2022 22:07

No I’m not offended and I am Chinese.

id be more worried about the shout8ng and swearing though.

carefullycourageous · 03/05/2022 22:07

Yes it is racist, and the behaviour afterwards was dreaful. Why the heck do you have this person in your house?

Stichintime · 03/05/2022 22:08

Thsts a disgusting comment. Of course its racist.

tillytoodles1 · 03/05/2022 22:09

Sorry, I misread that your son was asking a question while brushing his teeth.

KylieKoKo · 03/05/2022 22:09

It's the kind of casual racism that some white people ignore but really picks away at young kids who work out they are different before they even knoe what racism is. Good on you for calling it out OP.
