To think dogs are fantastic?

To give a different perspective to the dog hating thread.

We've got a 14 month Doberman.

She's lovely, well trained, I always pick up her poo, great recall.

We are met with a lot of dislike and hate.

Because she's a lockdown puppy, because she is a large bread, because she runs fast, but does not go near people.

We lost our other dog 18 months previously, I initially said never again. But I realised the 14 years joy he gave, made up for the pain of losing him.

Picture for effect.

Abs we call her the Dobergoat, because she's constantly butting things when she's indoors!

No spacial awareness. Grin

Yes, yes, yes, 100% agree.

Getting our boy 18mths ago is one of the best decisions I've made in my life. He's enriched all our lives so much and I love him more than words can describe.

It's wonderful isn't it, I'm so glad I made the choice again.

Is this your first dog?

Ours is our second, I'm seriously considering getting another when she's around four, never want to be without a dog again.

Yanbu. Not. At. All.

MysweetAudrina · 16/04/2022 07:52

Yes, they really are. I have my 8 year old staffy cross under the duvet at my feet and my 7 month old staffy sandwiched between me and dh as I type. I just love them both so much ( and their cat sisters). Even thought the puppy has eaten my brand new kitchen that I saved for years to buy she is still so worth it. I didn't go on a night out this week as tbh I just wanted to sit in with the dogs as they are better company than some of the humans I was planning on meeting. I do like human company too but I think over lockdown I just really bonded with my pets and just love going on walks and hanging out with them.

HowIsItMarchAlready · 16/04/2022 07:52

we've had dogs for 20 years, 2, 3, or 4 at once. They make our lives so much happier. We would not be without them.

Strugglingtodomybest · 16/04/2022 07:53

Yanbu, dogs are the best! I've got two cuddled up in bed with me now 😁

aloske · 16/04/2022 07:54

We have a lovely Labrador who is beautiful in looks and nature. She is an old lady now but is amazing with our two young children and we are all quite heartbroken as it's likely she won't be with us for much longer.

DOBERGOAT · 16/04/2022 07:54

I'm also in bed on MN, with the goat next to me Grin. She's great but she's going to be upset as I have to get up to take in the shopping delivery soon.

That's the massive downside of owning a dog. It's just so heartbreaking and as I said, initially I said never again, but I'm so glad I did.

I love dogs more than I love people 🐾

WhatdoImean · 16/04/2022 07:59

Dogs are wonderful companions!

I love ours to bits, and she is such a character (not sure the cat would agree... he "puts up" with her :-).

If there is an issue, I think it is that with covid/lockdown etc. there has been a boost in pet ownership by people with less experience, and dogs may not have been socialised or trained well. In my mind, it is never the dogs fault - it is the owner.

Personally, I would support having a dog licence/fee again, but i know if it was ever brought back, the Government would use it as a money making scheme and rather than just make people pause and think about a dog, it would probably turn out to be an annual tax of stupid proportions.

I'll go back to cuddling my dog now ;-)

Dogs are fab! This is my girl, she’s a two year old Jack Russell/Patterdale cross and she’s just lovely.

I don't have a dog- because small London flat and it would not be fair- but I love dogs and love looking at pictures of dogs.

I love my little dog. She's deaf from birth but she's learnt signs and lip/face reading, she was going to be put down because nobody wanted a deaf dog so she came to live with me. She's my little buddy and she might be a twat at times but she's my twat and I love her.

Saucery · 16/04/2022 08:04

Dobergoat Grin ❤️. She’s beautiful. My young Lab would love to play with her.
I meet some lovely people when out walking with my dog, she has local Friends too.
She’s currently lying at the bottom of the stairs waiting for DH to get ready and take her out. Then we will all have a trip to the Farm Shop, which is one of the places we took her as a tiny puppy, so she could get used to people at a distance. She still likes to People Watch through the open car window.

I put off getting a dog for years. Never felt like the right time. Got my boy during the second lockdown. He is fabulous. An amazing friend and companion.

LolaJ87 · 16/04/2022 08:05

YANBU - I love them too. I have a rescue staffie who we adopted when she was 9 and she is honestly like my best friend. We keep her on lead because she is not always keen on other dogs (due to her past) but she is an absolute lady. It was clear she hadn’t been spoiled properly in the first phase of her life but she is now!

I had some mental health issues kick up during a lockdown and she really helped me cope. I would give her anything in the world, she’s part of my family. I do like her more than most people! Dogs are fantastic and we don’t deserve them half the time.

My staffie is currently snoring away under his duvet. He's always been a spoilt boy.
Even now, at 13, with dementia and a failing body - he is still the most gentle soul, with an amazing temperament and funny personality.
