To think dogs are fantastic?

To give a different perspective to the dog hating thread.

We've got a 14 month Doberman.

She's lovely, well trained, I always pick up her poo, great recall.

We are met with a lot of dislike and hate.

Because she's a lockdown puppy, because she is a large bread, because she runs fast, but does not go near people.

We lost our other dog 18 months previously, I initially said never again. But I realised the 14 years joy he gave, made up for the pain of losing him.

Picture for effect.

My dog makes me smile every day, regardless of what’s going on in life. He’s funny and exuberant and affectionate and I love him so much.

I’m also slightly suspicious of people with a blanket hatred of dogs. I don’t mean those with a fear but the kind who just hate ‘em all.
Dogs are so pure, they don’t care if you’re royalty or a tramp, they just love you with their whole heart.

Mreggsworth · 16/04/2022 10:58

@iloveeverykindofcat

I can believe all that, dogs are very intelligent.

My dog knows the name of other dogs, he watches our behaviour and knows to open a certain door in the house he has to do something with the keys (obviously doesn't have the dexterity for it but tries to mimic us) he can open doors with door handles, I have locked myself out the house before and hes opened the door to let me in. He has a sense of time (knows when it's nearing walk time). Drags his bowl to the tap as he knows that's where water comes from. He knows when we are sad/happy. He knows when something is dangerous, he went absolutely mad when I went up a ladder the other day.

YAdefinitelyNBU! Dogs are the best.

Poochiemama · 16/04/2022 11:01

I have a 1 year old German shepherd. People cross the road when they see us coming. he has graduated puppy school twice and got special mention for his superb behaviour in class, once he leaves the instructors field of vision he goes feral. Its like living with an incredibly happy lunatic

NandorTheRelentlessCleaner · 16/04/2022 11:02

I have always liked dogs

We have two large lurchers (greyhound deerhound cross), they have sweet gentle personalities but because they are big and fast lots of people don't like them

I avoid busy places and the sort of parks/areas with lots of little dogs (as the owners get nervous)

OP, I accept that lots of people don't like large dogs, and whenever someone says something nice it's a bonus Grin

I’m definitely wary of dog-haters. The bond between me and my dog brings me so much happiness. He’s the absolute best.

This part deer/giraffe/horse has been with us for 5 months. We said never again after losing our 12 year old crossbreed but I'm so glad we took the plunge. He's such a good boy and his quirks make us laugh.

AndAsIfByMagic · 16/04/2022 11:13

I can understand why people like them but I don't. They smell and they slobber. Not in my house, thanks. :)

Vampirethriller · 16/04/2022 11:15

This is mine. Supposedly jackapoo but I call her the Stinkadoodle.

@ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts

Dogs are fab! This is my girl, she’s a two year old Jack Russell/Patterdale cross and she’s just lovely.
OMG what a cutie!!!!!!
Vampirethriller · 16/04/2022 11:16

PS please ignore very messy council estate-esque living room!

LuckySantangelo35 · 16/04/2022 11:17

Some dogs are fantastic yes. I love animals.

Some have dickhead owners however and I don’t love them.

Letting their dogs run up to you in a field or whatever.

But the worst is not picking up their dogs shit. Or bagging it up and leaving it in random places. I’m a runner and I get sick of having to always look down at the pavement to avoid running into dog shit. It’s only in the Uk where this seems to be such a problem. Uk beaches and seaside areas are a nightmare for it.

So no for me dogs are not fantastic but I appreciate it’s not the dogs themselves but their owners

Soooo cute!!!!! I have an 11 year old jack and the hair she sheds is just unreal. Does your's shed at all?
RelativePitch · 16/04/2022 11:19

My DP really didn't like dogs and it caused a lot of arguments because the DCs and I really wanted one. He conceded. We got a leggy hound Heinz 57 from Romania about 3 years ago and my DP is obsessed with her. She was the missing piece from his life. The irony is whilst I really like our dog, it's not the visceral, all encompassing love that my DP has for her. But she absolutely has brought so much joy to the household.

Vampirethriller · 16/04/2022 11:23

@Thesummeriwas16 yes she does, it's a nightmare. She's actually got a long curly coat but I clip her s soon as it's warm enough because that keeps it manageable.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 16/04/2022 11:25

@DOBERGOAT Doberman is my absolute favourite breed - what a gorgeous dog! They were too big for us when choosing our dog, but maybe one day in the future I’ll get one.

My dog is nearly 5 and he’s my very best mate. He’s great with the dc and brings us so much happiness. We really do not deserve dogs.

NeverChange · 16/04/2022 11:28

I really don't like dogs and people always react badly to that.

I was bitten by one when I was 7 and disliked them since.

Often unpredictable, don't like the animal smell, don't like the way they want to lick you, sniff you, jump on you, hump you, and I absolutely cannot stand when people share the human plates and dishes with animals. If you give the plate to a dog to eat from and then expect me to eat from it later, I will never eat in your house again. Also find it really disappointing when people throw so much money at animal charities instead of children who surely deserve it more.

Judge me if you like but dogs are not for me.

RedRobyn2021 · 16/04/2022 11:29

@DOBERGOAT my neighbour used to have a Doberman (he has since passed away) and he was a sweetheart

Simonjt · 16/04/2022 11:31

Dogs are brilliant, ours is a little star, he finished his good citizen gold award, although I have to say the achievement seems to have gone to his head.

I know a few people who dislike dogs/animals, all have proven to be untrustworthy and unkind people, they know only humans will fall for their act.

ouchyoubiteybugger · 16/04/2022 11:31

I love my dog, she used to be very friendly but after a lockdown full of idiots letting their little dogs run up with no manners and sometimes snapping at her face! She is now dog reactive so we don't allow dogs near her. She knows what she needs to be for each member of the family - emotional support/friend/playmate and has a beautiful nature.

KarmaStar · 16/04/2022 11:44

Yanbu.
Sick of dog haters whining away.
Dogs are wonderful, have more compassion, intelligence, empathy and work ethics than most humans.
They work so hard for humans,as pat dogs, guard dogs, explosive dogs, drug dogs guide dogs and companions for so many.
Dogs are the best.🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🌈💜🌈🐾🐾

Ownedbyabeagle · 16/04/2022 12:04

I love dogs and as my name suggests I'm very well trained by mine!
When we were without one for a while I felt so lonely.
I suffer with depression and he is the best anti depressant around!
He's currently curled up as close as he can get next to me.

Thesummeriwas16 · 16/04/2022 12:05

It's the only downside with jack russells! I will never look well-groomed as I always have a stray jack russell hair stuck to me and as for my car - I just give up! :-0

XelaM · 16/04/2022 12:07

Yes!!!!!!

There honestly is no better dog in the world than ours (sorry PPs 😜). He is my second baby and my bestest friend. An absolute darling who adores everyone and is the cleverest most loving little creature 🥰
