Why was the T (and others) ever added to the LGB acronym?

The T (trans) is surely related to gender and not ones sexual orientation?

Am I missing something 😵‍💫

And don’t the LGB community feel they’ve been hijacked now by the intense / constant focus on trans politics?

Aibu to ask this?

Because trans people have always historically been part of gay spaces and part of the gay liberation movement.

No, we don't feel 'hijacked', thanks for asking - most LGB people recognise that trans acceptance and equality is to our benefit and that modern transphobia is basically recycled homophobia, exactly the same arguments now being made against trans people that were made against gay people a few years ago. Most LGB people are absolutely happy to include the T.
SevenWaystoLeave · 22/03/2022 20:12

I'd also add I've been involved in LGBT activism for 24 years now, and the T has always been included, this is not a new thing.

phoenixrosehere · 22/03/2022 20:18

You must be really late to the party. I recall the term being LGBTQAI in 2008!

Empathy? An open mind?

@SevenWaystoLeave lovely post and so refreshing to read on here!

Not my community, but the creation of the LGB Alliance and protests at Pride from L without the T suggest some LGB people do feel hijacked. Stonewall seems to focus a lot on the T but only started campaigning on T issues in 2015.
Anotherofthesame · 22/03/2022 20:31

Many of us do indeed fee hijacked and have moved over to the LGB alliance.

Nope. Wasn't ever a thing beyond gay men being drag queens until pretty recently.
StillWeRise · 22/03/2022 20:35

OK, so what were the 'arguments being made against gay people' ?
was it 'gay people are telling children they need life long medication'?
was it 'gay people are telling kids that if you like the wrong toys you are in the wrong body'?
was it 'gay people will undermine women's sport'?
I don't recall that
The only 'arguments' I recall against gay people were along the lines of 'oooh yucky'
Gay men and lesbians only wanted the same rights as everyone else (to have sex with another consenting adult, to marry, to adopt, etc)
Whereas transactivists apparently think it's OK for a rapist to be in a women's prison.

HereticFanjo · 22/03/2022 20:36

This.

Which is recent.

For those of us who were around for Section 28, trans was nothing to do with us. They were middle aged straight men. Nothing to do with the LGB community at all.

Houseofmirth66 · 22/03/2022 20:37

Stonewall only added the T in 2015. At the time they wrote an article in The Guardian apologising for ignoring trans people previously. Their revising of history to pretend that trans people have been at the heart of their movement forever is nonsense. Now they would have us believe that a man, with a penis, can be a lesbian. So do LGB people feel that the T has hijacked their movement? Yes they do.

This. I’m also beyond sick of the new trend of straight people silencing us to achieve their own transphobic agenda.

LizDoingTheCanCan · 22/03/2022 20:40

Who are 'us'? What right do you have to speak for others?

Well as much right as the people saying that they have always included straight cross dressers I guess.
LizDoingTheCanCan · 22/03/2022 20:43

I looked up when the first LGBT nightclub opened in my city, it was 1998. The club was a focal point for the community, and trans people were very much a part of it.

Clymene · 22/03/2022 20:45

And were you there Liz? Because it wasn't ever mentioned. Not ever.

Yes, this and me too. These boards would have people believe that the majority of lesbians are unwelcoming of the T. Absolutely not the case, it's not what's happening on the ground, in our communities.
BigHeartyTruffle · 22/03/2022 20:46

@Simonjt totally agree! Also lesbian, gay and bi people are not an amorphous mass who all have the same opinion. In my “offline” community, I don’t know a single person who doesn’t welcome T, Q and all others.

StScholastica · 22/03/2022 20:47

My lesbian cousin was punched in the face by a trans woman because she rejected her advances. She's a lesbian, the trans woman had a penis.Hmm
She needed surgery for a broken jaw.
Transwoman was never found to be prosected and is still out there somewhere.

MadameDragon · 22/03/2022 20:47

Yet another member of the LGB happy to include the T and bored of straight people having any opinion about it.

flashbac · 22/03/2022 20:49

Transphobia is recycled homophobia now is it? What a lazy assertion with no critical thought behind it. If it's transphobic to believe sex is immutable how can you compare it to homophobia, which is based on moral disgust?

StillWeRise · 22/03/2022 20:50

I'd like instead to hear a coherent argument as to what common interests there are between gay men, lesbians, bisexual people and trans people. I can see that SOME LGB people are gender non conforming. However some straight people are also gender non conforming. So that's a pretty tenuous reason.
